(S07E16) This was a fun one. After all that had gone on over the course of this season -- the gnashing of teeth over the Lorelai/Chris pairing, the stresses of the Rory/Logan relationship, Luke's custody battle, Lor's and Chris' break-up, and Richard Gilmore's bypass -- Gilmore Girls fans needed an episode like this. It was light and fluffy and completely angst-free.Well, except for Logan. But there needed to be some angst in his life, as the Logan we've been seeing for the last few weeks has been very... well, he's been very un-Logan-like lately. In other words, he's been the perfect boyfriend to Rory. You know that had to end eventually.
We'll get to Logan later. Let's talk about the Kims. The relationship between Lane and her mother has always been one of the more fascinating side stories on this series: Mrs. Kim is a strict 7th-Day Adventist who never let poor Lane experience anything that an American teenager would normally experience. Despite that, Lane managed to become a good drummer, and avid reader, and a fan of every alternative band that existed between 1984 and now. And, despite the fact that Lane's an adult, married to Zack and pregnant with twins, she and her mom still disagree about... well, about everything. Isn't that always the way? Those little disagreements you have with your parents never disappear, they just get transferred.
It was cool to see Lorelai act as a mediator between Lane and her mom, not only because it allowed all of us to take a break from Lor's relationship tension, it also gave Lor some insight into how things went down with her mother. When she was telling Mrs. Kim about how Emily missed so much of Rory's growing up and that she shouldn't do the same, you could just tell that Lor had some regrets, especially in light of the alcohol-fueled bonding she had with Emily last week. It was also cool to see Lor distracted with the planning and logistics of Lane's baby shower, especially after Lane had to go on bed rest. The scene where Lor, Rory, Mrs. Kim, and Zach rolled Lane's bed through town to take her to the party at Miss Patty's was classic Gilmore, and was fun to watch.
Not sure why Lane asked Rory to be her kids' Lorelai Gilmore instead of just using the word "Godmother." I guess its the whole "God" thing that freaks Lane out, as we found out when Lor told her that her twins might actually like going to church. It was a sweet moment, especially when she said to Rory, "And you already have the name, so it's easy." Sometimes I forget that "Rory" is short for Lorelai...
Yet again, Liz and T.J. were around to be the voice of Luke's conscience. "Sell the boat, Luke! Make a change! Get unstuck!" But Luke didn't seem convinced. So April had to assist all the way from New Mexico. I like how Luke's initial version of "change" was to propose a summer trip to Disney World. I can't imagine either Luke or April enjoying that one, and I'm glad she called him on it and said hanging at the diner would be fine. The boat was the not-so-subtle symbol of the old stuck-in-his-ways Luke, so seeing him sell it to Kirk was a good step. Lor's quote when he told her he went out and bought another one -- "Wow. Luke Danes buying a boat in a day. You used to take a week to buy a t-shirt" -- tells us that the wheels in Lor's mind are starting to turn, thinking that this New Luke might have another shot...
OK, so let's just say that seeing Logan revert to his caddish ways and hang out with his caddish friends after losing all that money wasn't a big surprise. Neither was the fact that he decided to blow off Lane's baby shower to go to Vegas with Finn and Colin (Heck, I'd do that too, even if I didn't just lose millions of dollars). Now, what we're waiting for is how Rory is going to react. Will she stand by her man? Try to be on "Team Logan," like Mitchum mentioned last week? Or is she going to realize that she's going places and can't be dragged down by Old Logan anymore? That informational interview with that New York Times editor is a sign that things are looking up for Rory, even if she doesn't get a job at the Times. So will she put up with Logan's bull any longer? We'll see in the next few episodes.
A few more notes: Is Liz Torres losing weight? She looks smaller than she has in the recent past. That picture of young Lane and Rory was cute. Wonder who those kids were. Oh, and since I'm single and haven't worn one of these since I was still in diapers... does anything look cute as long as it's on a onesie? Some of the stuff they were painting on those things looked like it could scare kids in their sleep...

Dude, her name is Lorelai, NOT Lor. Only the dreaded soon-to-be ex calls her "Lor." Everytime you write "Lor" I'm reminded of Christopher and that's just not a place I want to go.

Liz Torres did look thin, but also old. She looks about 30 years older than she did on the John Larroquette show.

This episode was very enjoyable, compared to the ones at the beginning of the season, but then again, things could only go up, right? Also, isn't Rory her middle name, and Lorelai her first? Anyway, I hope the rest of the episodes continue get better.

Yes, almost anything is cute on a onesie as long as the Mom says it's okay. I actually thought that was a great baby shower idea and I will steal it one day. :) BTW... that shower looked so cool that I think any guy would want to go. Otherwise I would agree that guys at baby showers is strange.
I was rather ticked off that Logan reverted to his old ways. Especially Colin and Finn. Things go wrong so we live in denial in Vegas... way to go Logan.
The episode had potential for more but you are right.... the bed through the street was pure Gilmore Girls.

I thought it was touching the way various characters showed their appreciation for Lorelai, which really pointed up the wonderful effect she has had on the town through the years.

Amanda,
Rory is a nickname; Rory's real name is Lorelai Leigh Gilmore.
This episode was great, definitely classic Gilmore, but I'm ready for more L/L interaction. Will Lorelai ever go in the diner ever again?
I'm sad that April is in New Mexico now. I was really looking forward to seeing more interaction between Lorelai and April.

Lane asked Rory to be her kids'"Lorelei Gilmore" because the term was more specific than Godmother. Lorelei had been Lane's advisor, confidant, friend, stabilizer, and now mediator between Lane and her Mother. Telling Mrs. Kim that her own Mother missed so much was the turning point in Mrs. Kim coming to the shower. The more I think about it, what a wonderful honor to be asked to be someone's Lorelei Gilmore. I wish I'd have had a Lorelei Gilmore when I was growing up.
I noticed a few weeks ago that Liz Torres was looking much thinner. I think she looks great. She's a very pretty woman.
Logan has grown up some, but the whole thing about going to Vegas to unwind, and not even telling Rory about his company's disaster shows he still has a lot of growing up to do. Rory at the New York Times--wow!

I agree with Pam. Being asked to be your kids Lorelai is one of the highest honors you can ask of someone. Lorelai didn't let Lane get away with everything, remember when Lane snuck out and Lorelai had to go tell Mrs Kim because it was the right thing to do. Lorelai was her friend and surrogate non-7th Day Adventist Mom. She appreciated Lane for being such a good friend to Rory but worried about her like she was her own.
In other words, Rory is suppose to make sure when Lane is being unreasonable and not really listening to her kids, that she hears them and helps them out. It will be interesting since they will be boys but still you get the point. It's like the cool aunt or the fun older sister but better.
I wondered when I read the title what the heck did that mean and this was better than anything I came up with!

I'm just hoping Logan doesn't cheat on Rory in Vegas. I like the guy, but he would have no "story" for that one, unlike his previous philandering which was arguably excusable.

To have a Godmother, the baby needs to be baptised, and there is no way Lane is going to do that, hence asking Rory to be the babies' Lorelai Gilmore.

I liked this episode, too, as it was relaxing a fun, if a bit slow-paced. I loved the bed through the streets, I loved Lorelai mediating with Mrs Kim, and I thought Lane did a great "petulant pregnant girl" act, which is apt, considering she wasn't really expecting to have children so soon.
I'm also bummed about Logan reverting to form and going to Las Vegas, where no doubt he will cheat on Rory and break her heart, dang it all. Collin and Finn are BAD influences on Logan. I imagine Mitchim will be all over Rory for "allowing" Logan to go to Vegas without her. I hope she stands up to the elder Huntzberger, who is a windbag.
My only qualm with this episode was that I thought the whole "Luke selling his dads boat" thing was LAME.He's loved and cherished that boat as a part of his dad for years, and I think his ditzy sister and his idiot brother in law should keep their noses out of it. I also don't think you have to sell a family heirloom to change your life or move to a new phase. That's just BS. And he sold the boat for next to nothing, when we all know that freakish Kirk has a ton of money, so he could easily have gotten full price for it. I wonder about Kirk..does he live in the Twickham mansion that he bought after Luke gave it up? Does he still plan on marrying LuLu? I just think he's going to trash Lukes boat through some idiotic accident, and that will be the end of a cherished heirloom for no good reason. Also, Liz Torres looks great, though I thought she was fabulous at any weight. I imagine she has had bypass surgery or something, and is losing weight for health reasons. One of my favorite characters on Babylon 5, Vir, lost weight one season, and after meeting the actor, I learned he developed Type 2 diabetes and lost weight because of that. Liz is an older gal, anyway, so I'd say she looks pretty good for her age (she has to be in her late 60s at least).
