Hey, kiddies, ever dream that Constantine Maroulis or Kellie Pickler were your summer camp counselors? Those dreams may be closer to reality than you think, now that the ever-popular American Idol is taking its brand to summer camp. No, this isn't a Reality TV show (although I think that might work), or a movie (that's been done). It's an actual performing arts summer camp geared towards 12-to15-year-olds who dream of becoming the next Fantasia, Kelly Clarkson, or Taylor Hicks.A total of 700 teens will be accepted into this year's inaugural "Idol Camp" which will take place in Massachusetts over four 10-day sessions.
Besides offering traditional camp activities (like swimming), the camp will include drop-ins from former Idols, and offer classes on audition techniques, dancing, and music video production.
Unlike the TV show, "Idol Camp" is NOT a competition. So rest easy, parents. Once you pay your $2,900 fee, the kiddies are there for the duration. Nobody is "voting" them out of camp or sending them home early.
According to a spokeswoman for the camp, if this year's "Idol Camp" is successful, it may expand in the future to include other "venues and nations."
Honestly, I think all of our children's camps should have Reality TV-based themes and connections. Don't you?

American Idol Summer camp season is approaching and as a parent and physician, we are getting our children ready to go away for a few weeks to sleep away camp. There is a free service for parents with children going to summer camp with medical problems, conditions, medications and allergies. It is a free service and allows parents to easily set up a record of their child's medications, allergies or problems..so that if, while at camp, they were to get sick, this information would either be immediately accessible by camp nurses via the internet or the child can carry it with them in their wallet.
In a true emergency this information would be invaluable, particulary with the number of increasing medical errors, medication cross reactions and inadvertent allergic medical reactions. Having information at your fingertips for your child and his camp nurses, is critically important. All parents in this situation should take advantage of this preventive free service at http://www.CampMedic.com

American Idol Camp is cute and all, but why not just stick with the movie poster and send your kid to Stagedoor Manor, a camp that is already established with successful singers, such as Mandy Moore, AS WELL AS established actors like Zach Braff, Robert Downey Jr. Bryce Howard, Natalie Portman, and more. Singing, acting, dancing, they've got it all already. You can go to AIC and learn how to be cheesy for television, or you could go to a real camp with talent and learn how to be great.

Okay, I love watching the show, but I'd much rather have the Performing experience at a REAL camp. I am going on many auditions but I can also relax and chill while having a blast at my arts camp( http://www.medolark.com )in Maine.
