The late night race for Conan's hosting gig is on. Conan O'Brien will be leaving his 12:30 post for Jay Leno's 11:30 slot in 2009. That gives executives only two years to bandy about an improbably long and unlikely list of names as possible replacements. Last week Carson Daly threw his hat into the ring. Today the New York Times announced that former SNL cast member Jimmy Fallon may enter into a "holding deal" with NBC. The deal would essentially tie Fallon to NBC for future television productions, which could take the shape of a sitcom, a sketch show or a late night talk show. Whether Fallon would want to give up his fledging film career for television remains to be seen. (Insert your own joke about Taxi here.) Fallon's name will not be the last one we hear over the course of the next two years, and NBC could always pull a Conan and send in a dark horse at the last minute. Expect to see more candidates considered in this race than in the '08 primaries.

Interesting choice. I guess it would all hinge on whether Fallon has the ability to be a good host, which means letting your guests have the limelight while yoh, the host, facillitate the coversation. I also wonder if Fallon can keep from cracking up. Maybe they need to start putting some guests hosts into Conan's spot as a try-out. See with whom the audience feels comfortable.

I kind of hope it's a woman. I think late night could use a little more cleavage, and no, Jimmy Kimmel doesn't count.
Leno, Letterman, Stewart, O'Brien, Daly, Colbert, that other guy I've never watched but I hear is doing well, Kimmel: all dudes.
While most women would do better with the daytime stuff (Ellen, Oprah, etc.), I'm hoping they do something daring. After saying all this, I can't think of anyone that seems like an obvious choice, so I'm going to just throw out some random names: Lisa Kudrow, Amy Sedaris, Ryan Seacrest

Fallon could probably pull off a talk show, where it's okay to laugh at every dumb thing said. A Jimmy Fallon-centric sketch show, however, sounds like a disaster in the making.
How about Dave Chappelle? Realistically, I don't really see him returning to TV, but being on so late allows him to have a little bit of freedom and he's one of the few guys that would immediately have a loyal audience like Conan's. Other possibilities.. Bob Odenkirk, Richard Belzer, Norm Macdonald..

He did a good job on SNL with the news.
But I agree, they need a woman, or just something different. Why not have two host like Sunnie and Cher? Do something different.
But like Mike said...

How about D.L. Hughley? He came in second in the scrum to replace Craig Kilborn and it's highly unlikely he'll be committed to Studio 60 in the future.

Fallon was good on weekend update. So her could pull off a talk show. I've never seen Carson's show on TV. (If I'm up at 1am I'm not home) I did see a clip on youtube though and I kept a straight face the whole time. Plus I hated him on TRL too. So once again as Mike put it NO CARSON DAILY!

I wonder if the top dudes have ever watched Jimmy. There's really nothing there to wrap a show around.

Not Norm Macdonald. He'd be a terrible choice.
I like the idea of a woman, but I can't think of any ladies that would be a good talk show host. Actually, if 30 Rock doesn't get renewed, or is done by then, Tina Fey would do great.
Or Alec Baldwin. that'd be a great show, though I doubt he'd do it.
What about that guy that won MTV's "wanna be a VJ" contest... the really skinny dude... Jesse I think his name is. That's my top choice.

Dear Jimmy,
I hope you get everything you need and not what you want. I think that your talents and skills could be utilized elswhere. But if this is what YOU really want then go for it!!!!!!!!!!
Respectfully
your future guest on your show:)

Call me odd but I'd love to see Will Forte take over, he's got the chops for the sketches and like Conan I think he could develop as an interviewer over time. But yes, ABCD.

I agree, maybe experiment with a female late night talk show host?

Oooooh noooo, say it ain't so. NO to Fallon, or for that matter Carson D. Outside of maybe Sarah Silverman, I can't see a female late night host. Or like the previous responder, the female-like Ryan Seacrest. Maybe Katie Couric will be looking for a job soon?

I think Jimmy would be a wonderful host once he learns to conduct interviews better... I mean he does great when he hosts other things, he actually does have a lot of poise in front of the camera. But I agree two hosts would be cool too, I mean Jimmy & Tina would be awesome together...
Oh and ABCD!

Jimmy Fallon is the worst choice ever. He was hardly ever funny on SNL. The guy couldn't go through a skit without giggling and camera mugging. If he got his own late night TV show I would make it a point NOT to watch it.

Oh, please bring back Craig Kilborn! He was so great on his own late night show, but he decided to leave and take some time off for a while. Then he disappeared. Craig Furgeson is great too, but I miss Kilborn, Sebastian the asexual, Yambo, etc. I would love Kilborn to come back.

Someone from "Extra" (or the other Ch. 4 celebretes' show) interviewed Ellen and one of the questions asked of her was about possibly taking over
Jay Leno's night-time talk show in '09. She's interested.
Since I'm no fan of Conan Obrien's, it's disappointing to learn that he'll be moved into Leno's Spot.
Hey, Where's Arsenio? He had an excellent show before he & Leno (who were/are friends) went into an unnecessary battle.
