According to the site Associated Content, Michael Rosenbaum, who plays Lex Luthor on Smallville, is planning on leaving the show at the end of next season. There aren't many more details, other than the fact that Rosenbaum "confirmed" the report. The rest of the article just summarizes the development of Lex and speculates on whether the show can survive his departure. Considering the show is already in its sixth season, and Rosenbaum isn't going to leave until next year, it would seem that there wouldn't be much life left in the show beyond a seventh season, anyway. So this announcement, especially coming so early, is a curious one to me. Maybe Rosenbaum is looking for some sort of "farewell tou" or something. Not sure.
Can the show survive without Lex? Let me know in the comments.

The show would be nothing without Lex, his is currently what makes the show what it is now, hopefully if they do continue in someway they can talk him back in.

I'd be surprised if the show continues past next season.
All the character exposition has largely ground to a halt, and I think it's because the staff feels like they want to stretch the show's lifespan instead of letting the show come to its organic conclusion (Tom Welling putting on them blue tights).
I think Michael's statement is intended to send a message that its time to stop screwing around and finish the story the show was intended to tell.

I wouldn't mind them bringing in some new characters. Lex adds a lot to the story, but I don't think he is crucial.

I thought it was a smart move by Rosenbaum. This was he's giving a real heads up to the writers, giving them enough time to tie up lose ends for his character and possibly the whole series. I always thought that Smallville would end when Lex went all out to the "dark side" and became the Lex Luthor we've all known him to be. I'm just looking for that one final push that will make him totally unredeemable as it were. Like say, losing Lana to Clark or Lana dying or whatever. I vote for killing off Lana.
I'm also hoping that they'll somehow write Clark finally getting over Lana because Lois is supposed to be THE love of his life and even though they've hinted a lot that the two have chemistry, they've yet to take any major steps in letting Clark move on from Lana.
I'm sort of hoping that Lana would go to the dark side as it were, because if she dies she'll become this martyr and Clark will never get over that, but if she goes to the bad side, well, that's another ballgame.
I'd like to see Smallville end at a point where Lois is working at The Planet, Clark starts working there as well and has become Superman, Lana is dead or iiiiiivil and Lex Luthor is the arch nemesis he's supposed to be.
I just don't know where Chloe fits in to all this... although I've loved the way the writers have written her friendship with Clark this season. Chloe's moved on from her Clark obsession, why can't the writers make Lana do the same, dammit.

Two words: Britney Spears.
Now that she's bald enough for the role, she could consummate the sexual chemistry that has always existed between Clark and Lex.

If the show wants to continue beyond that, it would have to do a major shift in the life of Clark Kent, getting him to a point where Luthor would be doing something else and Clark would go off somewhere.
There has to come a point where Clark separates from Lois, Jimmy, Metropolis, and Lex, so that when he returns, people don't figure that Clark is just flying around in a cape.
If the show really will have an eighth season, and Lex is essential, and they don't just want to bring on Superman, they'd have to recast. That would suck, but the character is more important to the story than the actor who plays him.
Either way, enough of Lana. I can't remember an example of a character bringing down a show more than Lana this season.
It's become the story of Lana Lang, not the story of Clark Kent, and that stinks.

I mostly agree with gooby.
The show should end with C.K. fully done up in his full mild mannered-ness with a full time spot at the Planet, since he obviously has been after a college degree, and the night gig of Superman. Olsen and Lois need to be there as well.
Lana, on the other hand, needs to stay alive and not evil. This show has pretty much stuck to its roots, and Lana lives a full healthy life as a fashion designer and remains Clark's best friend that knows all about his powers.
And Chloe needs to get the hell out off the show. She was great and is a nice side-kick to C.K., but the whole thing between them is getting old. She needs to go and move next door to Pete.
If they do all of the above, then they might be able to continue the show with a completely new cast, or at least the same cast minus Lex, only they need to do it Justice League style. The batman/superman franchise is doing great by themselves. And the tease with Queen and Clark getting together for a small preview of the JLA was the best episode of the season. They have my blessings to continue along their merry little way if they do a Justice League series.

Instead of Lex they can just have a teenaged Darkseid instead. It turns out he really grew up on Earth *in Smallville* no less.
After that he can fight a teenaged Doomsday to the death.

It may be difficult but the series' focus is on Clark. It could survive without any character but Tom Welling's.

Smallville has had a great run, but the years of hard work to develop a cast consistent as elemental versions of the adult Superman characters will be ruined if the show continues much longer. Clark needs to grow into a man, and it doesn't happen dramatically with all the characters developing in a tight, chronological cluster. And, no, the show cannot survive without Lex or Michael Rosenbaum, which is no criticism of the rest of the excellent cast. He's doing the right thing, for his career and the show, knock wood!

Maybe the writers could prolong the show by having Lana give birth to a Baby Lex that becomes more diabolical than his so-called dad. And maybe the meteor rocks make him grow very, very fast, too.

I think next year should be the end. Without Lex Luthur the show is pointless, usless the writers come up with a new bad guy. Any chance of a Brainiac return? No, still wont work, Lex is supposed to be Superman's arch enemy. A conclusion would be good anyway, the show has gone on long enough.

This show stopped being interesting some time ago. I had dropped it for a while and then picked it up again, hoping against hope that something had maybe HAPPENED but no dice. The only interesting thread they have now is the JLA, plus when will this "kid" (he's 30 in april) learn to fly?

I'm amazed this show is still on. There is no way the show will go on for an eight season anyways.
And Lex is as important as Superman is.
