(S01E17) After feeling like we've been treading water over the last few episodes, this one really felt like the show started moving forward again. Jack and Lynn are getting married, Mai and Sylvia are planning a wedding, Sarah is moving on with her career, Annie and Patrick are meeting her parents, and Marin is having boy troubles of a different kind. I have to admit that I was getting a little tired of this show after last week but this episode was invigorating.
The theme this week was 'doing the right thing'. Marin was second-guessing whether leaving Jack and Lynn alone wasn't actually the right thing to do after all. In her despair, she got drunk and made out with her houseboy, Cash, who never seems to wear a shirt. It's gratuitous but I think that was the point. Marin actually seemed to take a back seat to the other stories this week and that was fine with me. Her Jack angst is played out enough.
Did any other X-Files fans out there feel a sudden rush of terror when Sarah was making eyes at that guy in her CPR class? Gah! It's Alex Krycek! Actor Nicholas Rea Lea ended up being a pretty nice guy- a pastor, in fact, which made for more than a little tension between the two since Sarah used to be the town hooker. I love that she told him about it straight-up, though. How many shows would drag out a secret like that and then have it blow up?
The Annie/Patrick storyline in New York was cute- complete with special guests Annie Potts and Colm Meaney as her parents. Poor Patrick was intimidated as hell by Annie's strict father. He thought he was being called out for sleeping with Annie before they married, but boy was he wrong! The twist at the end had me laughing out loud! The family gathering was another intervention for Anne's brother, a drunk who totally made out with Jane. Luckily, Patrick convinced the brother to go to rehab, which won him over with Annie's dad.
Another, smaller storyline that I really enjoyed was the planning of the wedding with Sylvia Celia and Mai. Really, it was Mai that I enjoyed. She had a couple of great one-liners: "I'm going with the traditional side pony." and "I haven't seen this big of a combination since Julia Roberts married the hillbilly with the Don King hair!"
Now, what on earth is Sarah being sued for? Good cliffhanger for next week!

It was a shock to recognize Krycek! He and Sarah have great chemistry (they date in real life, I read) so I really hope he can get past her past. I, too, was relieved she told him straight out - a common pitfall a lesser show would not have avoided. I really like the direction they are taking Jack - he's stepping up to take care of the woman he has loved for so long and for whom he feels so responsible. It will clearly go bad in the end (I hope), but I am enjoying the development of his character and the opportunity it gives Marin to act hurt and act out. Bring on more hot drunken obstacles for her!
BTW, I think Patrick's mom's name is Celia.

This was a stronger episode than they've been recently. I loved Colm Meaney as Annie's dad. The interaction between him and Patrick was fabulous.
Plus, the actor who played Annie's brother is from "Ed"!
I loved the Sarah storyline - it was great that she just blurted out her past. I was expecting that to be a long drawn-out ongoing saga. I'm guessing Sarah's lawsuit has something to do with her past. An upset wife suing for alienation of affection or some such thing? We don't know much else about her past. Is her kid's dad alive? Could he be suing for custody or visitation?

Such an enjoyable show imho. A hidden gem that hopefully more people are dicovering given the new timne slot. And last night's was one of the best eps so far. All the stories were good, but Patrick in NYC really made it for me. His character is great, as is just about everyone else.
If only Justine Bateman could act, this show would be perfect. I really hope the ring not fitting was foreshadowing that relationship's demise.

Allen - I second that.
I'm sure Justine Bateman isn't in this for the long haul, at least not as Jack's girl. Given the way the show was set up (and the fact that it's only the first season!) there's no way Marin loses the guy to the pregnant ex.
At least, I hope so.

Re Krycek: me too! I was all ready to see Pastor Eric's eyes go cloudy with the black oil.
P.S. It's Nicholas Lea.

I was SO expecting Kryceck's eyes to go all black oil in the church I got out of Elmo for a few seconds there.
That is not to say Rea is a bad casting for the part unlike the barf inducing Bateman who make me run out of the room whenever she's appears.
There's just so much fugly and bad acting this girl can stand and Bateman's awefulness in this show has the power of a supernova. I just run for my life.
I've read Bicks' blog at ABC and she can wax on Jack and Lynn being childhood sweethearts and how Jack wants to do the right (episode theme), it all falls flat because of Bateman for me. Not all writing can make actors good and vice versa *cough*Lost*cough* and here she just does not fit the part, she makes acts of presence for the character but she does not bring life to it even though the writing tries to do it.
It just does not work and makes for an already cringe inducing storyline for Jack all the more untolerable.
That said I like how Marin laid it down for Jack in the end. But again, and as much as I root for them as a couple, I'm not entirely sure what Marin had with Jack entitled her to be so judgemental. But then, I start thinking that when one's hope is crushed it's so devastating that it makes a simple sneeze as bad as dying from SARS so it's only 'normal' (read : human) that Marin is a smidge too over dramatic in her wording there.
She is hurting and vulnerable and the little control she has over her emotions is cracking.
A good scene between them.
I loved Annie and her mother having the same manerisms. Their clapping had me giggling.
Jane was adorable and while I want her to be with Plow Guy, she was cute with Annie's drunk brother. She was hysterical trying to hide the little champagne hicups during the intervention.
Mai and Celia were a hoot and it is all billions kinds of wrong that Celia's do reminded me of Betty's make over (same outrageous make up and awfully puffy do).
Re: Cash and Marin...it's contrived but I'm a shallow woman and I live with the shirtlessness quite fine, thank you very much.
Back to Sara, what was she served with? My current guess is something relating Matt's custody but at the same time we've been told her ex left and he didn't seem invested in keeping in touch with his son so that would be weird. Who knows?
It's a tad odd that there's isn't more *visible* awkwardness between Sara and Ben but I give the show props to at least slipping in a line about it in the dialogue.
I have to say I find odd that a new pastor moving in hasn't made the town's gossips since they've announced one guy's death on the radio show. I mean the previous pastor had been around for a while, him being replaced would have made the headlines too I think.
My point is just that Marin and everyone would know about him and they could have told Sara about Krycek's job.
But yeah...whatever.
Anyone else wonders who was crazy enough to marry Jerome?
All in all a solid episode, easily much better than last week's imo.

innamorata - excellent point about the small town pastor being able to slip under the radar. Also, you'd think the church ladies would have told him about her - the scarlet woman! - within eight seconds of him moving to town. That's how small towns work. And someone at the Chieftain should have recognized him. When there's pretty much only the one way to get into town, there's no way he could have snuck in under the radar.
Also, I did wonder that about Jerome too. They're keeping him as a satellite character for now, but it could be an interesting thing to explore somewhere along the road.

YES, yes, yes! You hit the nail on the head there, Inamorata, because that is exactly what happened to me...I saw Rat Boy and was ready to bolt from the room! I think its rather amusing, though, that a man of the cloth should want to get involved with the town hooker...can anyone else see a Jesus and Mary Magdalene connection there?
And as to the ugly Justine Bateman, again YES! She just makes me cringe, she's so hideous and such an awful actress. Someone, please, kill her off before I vomit! She reminds me of the lizard-skinned has-been models I met when I worked at a magazine in Florida. Some of the older ones had that half-lidded, drugged stare that Bateman seems to think is sexy, when it makes her face look like a lizard in search of a cockroach snack.
I love this show, despite Anne Heches insanity as a person, and I loved McTreemy,Jack, because he was so strong and soft spoken and hot...then he goes all wobbly over the butt-ugly Bateman, who is carrying someone elses child? Why? What a disappointment! I have to say that the hot new guy, Cash, is just delicious to watch, even when he's just brushing his teeth. I think Marin should just bounce his luscious rump across her bed and forget about McTreemy, who lost his spine somewhere a couple of eps ago. And I am so sorry to see Jane lose the yummy plow guy, all over a stupid mouse! Come on! He was hot, he was good in bed, he was funny and sweet and totally worth living on a boat with a tiny little mouse for! I mean get real, the guy has dimples a mile wide, even. Yummy! I think the brother that Jane was making out with was okay, but nowhere near as hot as Plow guy. And, as a Star Trek fan, I have to say that seeing Colm Meeney is always good for my heart. What a great guy, and a great actor, bless his Irish heart. I love this show, mainly for the funny small town characters and the totally hot men, and I hope it continues to be as much fun as it has been this year. And more of Cash naked is definetly a good thing! Whooo-baby!

Awesome show!
I was so glad Jack saw Marin kissing Cash!
Oh yeah and Lynn's ring not fitting? Exactly! She is not the right fit for Jack!
I enjoy watching Patrick and Annie every week, they are so hilarious!

Except for Jack proposing to Lynn it was an excellent episode! I have to admit it made me happy that the ring didn't fit! It also made me wonder why it took so many YEARS for Jack to get around to giving her a ring he bought for her so long ago?!?!I'm so glad Marin stopped playing nice and let her feelings out! Cash may be a bit full of himself but I think his attitude is going to be a good influence
on Marin! Plus he's really easy on the eyes! :)
Mai & Celia planning the wedding was a hoot and Patrick meeting Annie's family priceless.
I hope her family comes to Elmo for the wedding! I was a bit disappointed in Jane kissing on Annie's brother -especially after PlowGuy sent her his sweater!
It was a little bit freaky seeing Kryceck as a minister but him & Sara could be a cute together. I'm
just glad she told him about her past now instead of worrying about him finding out about it later. I think the reason no one at the Chieftain recognized Eric as the new minister is because he doesn't
live in Elmo... he told Sara that he lives a few towns over.

So Sean, background guy, why did the powers that be hire ugly Justine Bateman? For contrast to Anne Heche? I mean eww!
I sure hope that Jane and Plow guy get back together...they were so much fun, and he is such a dish! As a bibliophile, it heartened me that plow guy thought Jane's book nerdiness was sexy...sigh. I wish my guy thought brains were sexy!
Anyway, I am thrilled that this show is on, because its like a new version of Northern Exposure, which had an indoor studio not too far from where I live in Washington state. Keep up the good work!

It's a good thing Cash doesn't have too many lines; I don't think he could handle any complex acting. And I'm glad Marin gets to tell him he's conceited; it's too obvious to go unnoticed. But what he lacks in depth, Cash makes up for in looks. I thought I was only watching the show for the brains behind the story, but I was kidding myself. Bring on more Cash!

Yeah, does anyone know if there will be a new episode next week? There is a new show that will be aired during the same time slot on the same night as Men In Trees. So what is going on?

I also think that Justine Bateman, to be polite, has not aged well. She has a harshness about her that is an extreme contrast to HEche, but perhaps this is what the writers want. They can't have the two main protaganists together off the bat, or there would be no show. I am guessing they are smart enough to realize that the fans of the show just are not going to appreciate Jack & Lynn together for long.

I am from New Zealand and stumbled across this show when it started a few weeks ago. I LOVE IT!! I love everything about the show, so much so that after only seeing 5 eps I had to go search the net to see whether the show continued for awhile or whether it got dumped - because I'm loving it so much that I was worried I'd be massively disappointed when it suddenly just stopped one week, never to return again. So I am greatly relieved to see that there are many other fans of the show out there. Heaps of people I know in Europe, Australia and here in New Zealand love it. I hope that ABC keeps the show going for many more years to come.
Having said all that... I read ahead and found out what happens in the rest of Season 1, especially relating to this horrible Lynn. Not happy about that!!! But as long as they don't sabotage Jack's character while spinning out this triangle storyline, I suppose I can live with it. The attraction between Jack and Marin is quite incredible (we just had the "heatwave" episode here - say no more!!), so I am not at all surprised that the Jack-Lynn thing is a complete turn-off.
GREAT show ABC. It is now my FAVE show, alongside Lost and Grey's Anatomy... I think I'm starting to like it even more than those other 2 actually, and that's saying something.
