(S02E16) Not bad, pretty much what I've come to expect from this show even when the episodes are just so-so. To me, this was one of those episodes.
Before I talk about the case, first we have to chat about Reid. I'm already disappointed with the way this story is being handled. It's being played out precisely the same way that Elle went downhill at the beginning of the season just as I predicted it would. Reid is having flashbacks to his kidnapping and torture, he's contemplating using the drugs, and he's becoming snippy and distant with his co-workers. There are a million other ways to handle this, so why go the same route as Elle? I don't think he'll be leaving the show as she did, but it's still disappointing to see the same thing over again with a different character. Here's to hoping I'm wrong and that something fresh is in store for us.
The case was pretty standard fare for the BAU team, but I think this was the first time a real social issue like race was weaved into a case. Is it just me or did it feel a little clichéd though? A lowlife janitor posing as a record producer, luring girls into a recording studio and then having his way with them. Maybe not that story specifically, but it feels like we've heard it plenty of times before on Criminal Minds. Just a twist of the story but that doesn't make it new.
By default of the material, Morgan became a large player in this episode but we didn't really find out anything new about him. Just that his father died while Derek was young, but we knew that anyway. It was just emphasized here again. Random thought that just occurred to me? It probably isn't a coincidence that this episode aired during Black History Month.
There were a few other good moments in the episode. I like that they're finally trying to make Emily a little more likable. She started talking to Derek about her love-life and how she constantly screws up dates because she's a big ol' nerd. It's about time that we got something like this, because a lot of people noticed how cold she seemed and how little she reacted to crime scenes in the last few episodes.
I also liked the end with Reid and how he also chose to confide in Derek. The conversation didn't give me any hope regarding what's next for him, but like I said earlier, hopefully I'm wrong.

Re: Reid, I get Carter on drugs after being stabbed flashbacks.
I put five on the new girl exposing his addiction in the finale and Gideon (though I think it should be Hotch) bringing him to some detox center "hush hush" so Reid can keep his job.

I was also a little disappointed with how the Reid story line was handled. Granted it was difficult to tell the time line but it had to be more than a couple of weeks sine he had no bruises but not too long since upstate NY looked awful green. I wonder if they are planning to make the drug vials a talisman for Reid and the drug abuse rumors we keep hearing about will be part of some misunderstanding on the part of the team later on.

I agree....the plot line with Reid is a total re-do of Elle. Predicable and boring....which I find disappointing for this show. It has been a great show so far. The last two episodes prior to this one were awesome and even managed to freak me out a bit!

I'm with you guys on the Reid front. I knew this was going to end badly the minute James Van Der Beek said "tell me this doesn't make it better." The drug problem storyline is over used. The result is (a) there is misunderstanding about him using drugs when he doesn't, which would be nice but unlikely to happen, (b) they discover it and wisk him away quietly to rehab, which is most likely but is at best trite, (c) he has a large scale breakdown in the middle of a case and gets put on probation therefore losing him for a couple of episodes which would suck because he is my favorite character, (d) he leaves the show, which is the least probable given that they have already chunked one character this season and imdb doesn't have him working on anything major in the future.
Though admittedly I am not entirely convinced that the only reason Reid spilled his guts to Morgan was that he was actually on the drugs on the plane ride home. He seemed a little out of it in the bad way.
No matter what, I hope this story arc is resolved soon because they are dealing with it badly. This is my favorite show on TV, and is the only procedural show that I watch anymore. I'd hate to have to find another one because they screwed this up.

We had an ice storm yesterday, power outage all day and then when the power came on it must have fried my digital cable box, so I have to wait until tomorrow for Mr. Cable to bring me another one. Thus I am missing all my shows!!!!!
Thanks for the update Jonathan and for all the responses. I do hope I get to see a "repeat" of this episode.
I too will be very upset if they go the "addiction" route. I watched ER for years and then when Carter started with all that crap, (after he got stabbed)I stopped watching it because he became a dull character.
We get enough about "addictions" in the news. Each week someone else is going into rehab. It is becoming the newest trend. Rehab is for Hollyweird, not for a member of a BAU team.
I am sure it happens in real life all the time with Law Enforcement of all kinds, but this is REID for crying out loud! I am obscessed with his mind and they better not mess it up with drugs. I find his character interesting that in spite of his tragic childhood he brought the best from the little his mother gave him and uses it for greater purposes.
Glad to hear Emily is getting a personality, even if she is just a nerd with or without a date. Oh, that is being mean. Sorry, but that is what I got out of the recap and that still doesn't make her interesting to me. She needs something BIG like a huge personality flaw or a strange past. Give her something, because so far she is dull.

This episode was taped prior to announcement of the super bowl episodes with a little creative editing of Reid's flashbacks. Next wee will be the first "real" episode. Hope to see more of Reid and Jj's storyline.

I'm disappointed in the show right now. There are too many big leaps ion the story telling and the character development seems to be getting weaker. The idea of Reid not telling about his new drug problem is one of the biggest issues for me. I am willing to suspend belief that the doctors, nurses and EMT personnel who examined him after his kidnapping and assault all missed the track marks that were so obvious to Papa Rafael. But Reid is an open book to his co-workers and hiding something like this isn't part of his personality on the show. Why not have him admit what was done to him and then let him struggle with it afterwards? It adds another layer to a flawed and struggling character and remains true to his personality. The lying and hiding could be attributed to his slide back to the drugs instead of just an instantaneous decision.
I'm also not happy about the pacing of the show. The story this week never developed beyond a sketch and turned on someone who "knew" the unsub and suddenly they're racing to the record studio just in time to stop him. That was just lame. I'd rather they continued the episode into next week and give us a better story and more depth to the unsubs and the team.

I totally agree with Jukin - after his ordeal Reid would have been examined by a medical docter and a psychatrist trained to look for such things. And the needle marks would have been hard to hide. I don't think Reid has used the drugs yet - it didn't look like much was gone in the bottles. Maybe his talk with Morgan will help to defuse the situation. On to other things, I would love to see Morgan and Emily connect with each other, maybe not dating, but definately a closer partnership. AND, we always need more Garcia. She one of the most unique, interesting charaters on TV right now, and a refreshing change from Barbies with badges.

i haven't been watching religously until recently so i really don't know the whole story, but it seems to me that emily hiding something, no?
i haven't seen the episodes when she first came to the team, but at the end of this episode when she hands the book over to morgan, she says, "i haven't read this book in fi- i mean, twelve years." also, in the episode before this latest one, they made a big deal about her being unaffected by the gruesome crime scenes, which i agree is a bit mysterious. she's supposed to be new at this and it doesn't faze her one bit? why not?
do you guys think it's just because she's a new member and we're slowly learning about her or do you think there's more to it than that? maybe she's a hannibal: brilliant and functioning, but a cold-hreated killer. ok, so i'm exaggerating, but you get the idea.

Look folks, let me ask you all something... what would be going through your head if you'd just been through what Reid has? In the context of "we have forty minutes to both solve a case AND deal with some serious post-trauma issues, I think they're doing relatively well.
There's a distinct difference right now between Reid's post-traumatic dealings and Elle's demise. I Elle let her anger and panic get to her FAST... leading to the gunning down of the unsub. Reid hasn't reached that point yet, he's still shaking, so to speak. He was forced face-to-face with all his personal demons regarding his mother, along with some very real physical torture, the drugs included. Loss of control like that is like nothing most of us can imagine.
But he's still there - and he's willing to confide in someone (Morgan). "I know what they went through" is a hard thing for even a profiler to go through. I know what they saw... what they felt... and I know it FIRST-HAND.
I'm a little surprised JJ was able to snap back (seemingly) as fast as she did.
Give them a break, folks - again, it's nearly impossible to cover such things along with a case in forty-minute intervals. I expect we will see Reid handle things, good or bad, over the next several episodes.
Last season there were myriad gripes that we were learning nothing about the characters... and now there are myriad gripes that the cases are suffering. Shall we make up our minds, please?
As for the post-SuperBowl slot, if people can't tell from the previews that Criminal Minds is NOT a show to watch with their young children, then they might need to rethink their viewing criteria.
For the record, CM is not a procedural - procedurals deal with evidence gathering and standard police procedure - that's where the name comes from.
And I far prefer the dark exploration of deviant behavior than the glorification of pre-marital and extra-martial relations that are apparent from the trailers of the sitcoms suggested as alternatives. At least, if my daughter walks in on CM, I can explain to her that the FBI is chasing down a bad guy... what shall I tell her about the others?

CM is like no other show because it keeps you guessing about the characters and why they joined the BAU. If they told everything about the team all at once and developed their characters at a fast pace then why watch at all? I think their pasts will continue to come through the story lines through the season but they are planning on having many more seasons to come and i personally wouldn't be watching if the characters weren't mysterious in some ways. So cut the writers a break. After all you can tell the cst and writers love this show because of the way they write the scripts and the way they pay attention to small details that would have been lost in other crimes shows.
