Controversy and rumors sure like to swirl around you when you're a TV ratings powerhouse. In today's American Idol controversy, Simon Cowell is accused of planting a British pop star in this year's pool of contestants.Tom Lowe wowed the judges at the Seattle auditions (see video here), earning a coveted golden ticket to Hollywood. Lowe told Simon, "I was at BMG Records in London at the same time that you were there."
As a member of the British boy band 'North and South', Lowe released a couple of singles. He reportedly split with the label in 1998.
Simon Cowell told Lowe he didn't remember him at BMG. But an angry Idol contestant is stirring the rumor pot, telling The Daily Star, "It's really suspicious that they were at the same record company. Simon claims he doesn't remember him but there's a feeling among some people that this could be a fix. A career in the States could be worth $195 million so there's a lot at stake and people aren't happy."
Why would Simon fix Idol? He clearly doesn't need the money. Besides, I doubt he'd be stupid enough to leave an obvious trail back to himself if he did indeed "fix" anything. Don't you?
To me the most interesting part about this story, is that it brings up a very interesting question: Is it fair for professional singers/musicians such as Lowe or Jory Steinberg -- who already signed with major record labels in the past and released singles -- to compete against mostly amateurs looking for their FIRST BIG BREAK into the business?
Also, controversy or not, do you really think the American public will give a Brit the title of American Idol?

I really do not see why Simon would be desperate enough to fix AI either. Besides, of the three judges, Simon seems to be the one that cares the most about the SINGING ... and the pretty girls, and this Brit is not a girl.

"Is it fair?"
Seriously, you're asking if this show is "fair"?
That's just too funny.

BMG isn't some dinky little recording company - until it was acquired by Sony the Bertelsmann Music Group was one of the Big 5 recording companies in the world. Sony-BMG has a 21.5% share of the global music market. It is entirely possible for two people to be at BMG at the same time - even in the company's London branch - and have absolutely no contact with each other. I think the only people who are thinking that this could be a fix because they "worked at the same record company" are the angry contestant and maybe his/her parents.
That said I don't believe that it is right or fair for someone who has already been under contract for a major label like BMG to be able to compete with someone who has never been signed by any label.

What, pray tell, is a BRITISH person doing on a show title "AMERICAN Idol"? For that matter, why is there a BRITISH judge? Someone needs to remind the FOX Network that the show is "AMERICAN Idol," and that AMERICAN means just that, AMERICAN! And the way to do that is for EVERY MAN, WOMAN AND CHILD in this country to write, call, or e-mail FOX that they will PERMANENTLY BOYCOTT THE ENTIRE PROGRAM SCHEDULE OF EVERY FOX AFFILIATE, UNLESS THEY KICK LOWE OFF, AND FIRE COWELL!

It is true that American Idol should be for Americans only. But as far as trying to get rid of Simon is absolutely ridiculous. Simon makes for good TV. And those that believe that Simon fixed the show, you ought to get a life.

I thought that there was something in the contract of AI saying that they couldn't have signed with a previous record label. I guess I was wrong. And yes, I do think that it is unfair. If you can't make it with one record label, I don't think you should go and try with another. That just wastes the time of the producers when they could be discovering REAL talent. And I personally like Simon. So what if he's from England?! America is SUPPOSED to be diverse. Hell, if there can't be a British judge, then African Americans shouldn't be able to win because they're AFRICAN. See how silly that sounds?

Well, seeing as how Simon is the owner of the intellectual property of the show, they can't very well fire him. Attempting to substantiate your inadequacies by calling for ill-founded "patriotism" against American Idol is ridiculous. It's a TV show for god's sake! If you don't want to watch it, don't, I certainly don't, but associating The United States of America with a vehicle through which Fox profits greatly serves only to reflect badly on yourself.
Also, American Idol refers to the Idol of the American People, doesn't matter what nationality they are so long as the people voting like them.

I don't think that Simon would really plant a person on American Idol. He is so picky. Why would he go through the trouble? I mean, I like Simon. He is the funniest part of the show(except for the bad singers). People just like to start gossip. HELLO!!! That is a sin!!!

What is a Brit doing on American Idol? Simon Cowell brought the show here, copies from his similar show in England called The X Factor. Does that answer your stupid question? He can't be fired, idiot.

Also, Cowell is the only one who tells the truth. Most of the people who audition have not a musical note in their bodies and are asking for the truth. If it weren't for Simon Cowell, hardly anyone would watch the show.

It's hard to fire Simon for being British when HE is the producer of the show. All of this American this stuff is really stupid. Americans are competing in the competition, Simon obviously has right to be in the country or he wouldn't be here, so where is the injustice? I don't see any. It's Simon who is giving the people a chance to achieve their dreams.

P.S. Puzzlewhiz:
You obviously do not read the credits of American Idol, or you would have noticed that the program is produced by the BBC - BRITISH BROADCASTING COMPANY. That is the brit connection. And most people watch the show because Simon Cowell tells it like it is! If we only had Paula's flowery compliments and Randy's "Yeah Dog" it would be a very dull affair.

OOps! Sorry, it's British Broadcasting Corporation, not Company. And I am sure Fox loves doing business with them, since the show gets the highest ratings of all.

I believe in nothing short of Simon's total, absolute corruption. Even the bloody telephone voting is fixed--try getting through to vote for a contestant who is not a fave of Simon's. Yes, he would have a Brit named "American Idol," and further, I would wager that he would have sex with the male former up-and-coming pop star, to boot. He wouldn't admit to any such interest, but that's to be expected. Simon, Donald, all these wankers... they're all alike. Bugger the lot of them, and sod their rutting contests, American or otherwise!

Ok, first of all, I do happen to agree that since it is the American Version of the British hit show, they should only allow people who live here in the states a shot.
That being said, do you realize how many people I work with and couldn't tell you who they are if I saw them on the street? I'm sure if you work for a company with more than about 15 employees, the odds are that you have experienced the same thing.
And no, if someone has already had a recording contract, they should not be allowed to compete. I look at like this, they had their chance and for whatever reason, they blew it, too bad so sad.
As far as getting rid of Simon...puh-leez!!! He is the best part of the show. I would be more inclined to think that the show was fixed if he wasn't so brutally honest.
