(S01E14) I continue to like Brothers and Sisters more and more every week. And one of my favorite things is the fact that the writers constantly give Rob Lowe lines that reference his famous past.Kitty has dinner with a billionaire, just the two of them alone in his hotel restaurant, and McAllister jokingly asks if Kitty obtained campaign support by sleeping with him. Kitty replies, "This isn't Indecent Proposal. I'm no Demi Moore," and McAllister says, without missing a beat, "I used to have a real thing for her." Rob Lowe played Demi Moore's love in About Last Night. I hope they continue to do this every week. We can turn it into a drinking game! I loved the way they framed this episode with all of the siblings waking up with their wildly inappropriate bed partners, like matching bookends. The actors do a great job with navigating all of their various phone calls and gossip, as usual. I don't think anybody has debated whether or not this cast has great chemistry. And the writing is improving, too.
Kevin and his former love, Scott, had some very nice scenes at the party. "I miss you sometimes." Kevin tells him. "I miss you, sometimes, too."
I feel for Chad too. He has a career to think about and a reputation, and even though some people might think his refusal to acknowledge his sexuality is cowardly, I think it's more complicated than that. Chad isn't misrepresenting himself to Kevin. They just can't help themselves. I think a lot of us have pursued relationships in which we might have known that we were destined to get our hearts broken. It's excruciating to watch, but I can't turn away.
I really wasn't sure what to think when I found out Margot Kidder was going to appear on the show. But once I got past her changed appearance and hideous glasses, I really enjoyed her performance. I thought she did a really good job. It was understated, wry, and not too crazy or over the top. Nora is dealing with an existential crisis, now that William has died and the kids are all grown. Sarah gives her the condescending advice to "Enjoy the rest of your life." Well, that's pretty simplistic and doesn't suggest or replace the purpose Nora is concerned with. How is Nora to go about this? Sarah isn't exactly a good role model.
And finally, even more interesting than the inevitable romance between Kitty and McAllister is his plan to run for the Presidential nod. They have poised this storyline perfectly for the coming months. What is even more interesting, considering the current political climate, is the fact that McAllister is a Republican, and Kevin can't stand him. It will be interesting to see who they get to run against him-- and whether he will be as personable as McAllister.

Rob Lowe steals every scene he's in. It's uncanny.

You're right, the writing is definitely improving. Not quite as scattershot as it was in the first half of the season. Even better, I think, is the character development and the fact that each of the actors seems to feel more comfortable in the role. The notable exception here is Sarah. I wish the writers wouldn’t make her such a bitchy character. I get that Sarah is disappointed in her father and greatly dislikes his mistress, but the way she tramples on Tommy just seems out of place for her character. I also like the development with Holly. I was not a big fan of this character and it seemed early on that the writers weren’t sure where they were going with it, but how they’ve integrated her into the company works. It allows her to someday, maybe, grow beyond just being the former mistress.
As for this episode in particular I really enjoyed the comedic moments, especially Nora and her friend, Emily, played quite humorously by Margo Kidder. I love it when she says, “No one remembers the 60s, that’s why they were so great.” Or something to that affect. It was great to see Scotty back, even if it was to only hurt him once again. I love the chemistry these two actors have together, and I’m not so sure I want to see another Walker hop in bed with another McAllister when the gay brother shows up. Oh, well. I enjoy this show more and more I watch and I hope it sticks around for awhile.

Since they'll probably never stop making movies based on TV shows, when they finally get around to making "Match Game - The Movie", I think Margot Kidder should play Bret Somers. Those godawful glasses sealed the deal.
Yes, I watch too much of GSN. What of it?
