The head of Cartoon Network resigned today over the marketing stunt that caused a terrorism freak-out in Boston last week. Jim Samples sent a memo to staffers today about his resignation, saying, "It's my hope that my decision allows us to put this chapter behind us and get back to our mission of delivering unrivaled animated entertainment for consumers of all ages."Sheesh. It sounds like a robot wrote that. I would've preferred something a little off-beat, you know, in the nature of Cartoon Network and all.
So far, Sample is the only casualty from the fiasco. Well, that and two million of Ted Turner's dollars.

David: The freaks in Boston don't work for a big publicly traded company whose stock might fall (or has already fallen) due to this thing. That's the only reason this guy quit; he probably knew little or nothing about the marketing beforehand.

As for the money Ted Turner spent, they could make a big chunk of it back from selling those over-priced Lite-Brites on ebay.

The freaks in Boston did more damage then this guy who probably never even knew about it. They caused mass fear because they are dumbasses and some of them should resign. They are in charge of the safety of a million people and they can do the job. That's much more important than a lame stock price that in 6 months won't matter.

Such a bad idea to take responsibility for this. They should have stood their ground. Now media companies can be expected to compensate for anything that scares anyone. No judge in the country would have held Time-Warner responsible for this, and now they're wasting $2 million, a good television executive and their public image on one isolated incident that most reasonable people consider to be an overreaction, especially after the smoke cleared.
Buying off Boston was one thing, but having people resign because of it? That's just a bad, bad idea. Makes them look guilty for something most people (in hindsight, especially) didn't blame them for in the first place.

No. Only the ones that use viral advertising without getting permits.
Whether one agrees with how the police handled it or not, had this guy gone through the proper channels and gotten permission to hang these things, then cartoon network would not have been responsible for any of this.

Yeah, if the guy had gotten permission. I don't think anyone should be at fault here but the people in Boston who overreacted and didn't think this through, but you yourself just said that it was the fault of the guy or even the marketing firm, not Cartoon Network. Who, by the way, called Boston on that day and told them what those things were, but didn't get anyone to listen.
Meanwhile, another guy on the same day puts two realistic imitation pipe bombs in a building and on a bridge and doesn't get charged with anything. It's true, search for "pipe bomb boston". So where's the outrage about that?

Despite Boston's reaction being absolutely asinine, I don't have a problem with Samples resigning. He's the guy who decided to introduce live-action movies into CN's lineup and the cartoons they have been picked up have been a lot less creative than their older stuff, in my opinion.

Hmm... Maybe the Boston thing was just a convenient excuse. Maybe he was being pushed out the door anyway and saw a way to save face.

That's what I thought, Vito... I hope he's not resigning solely because of the fiasco in Boston? I think it sends a bad message. Sure, they should have been more responsible in their viral marketing campaign, but Boston overreacted a bit too.

Take it from a GameTap freelancer... Ted Turner has nothing to do with Turner Entertainment. Time-Warner bought his media empire and forced him to resign from the board of directors after he made the mistake of buying America Online.
