Normally the Lost recap specials are nothing more than generic clip shows, but the Lost Survivor Guide was a welcome departure from that trend. There were clips, of course, but the interviews with producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse shaped them far more than the typically broad statements from the narrator. In case you didn't catch the credits, the episode was narrated by Kyle MacLachlan, which I'm hoping was a shout-out to his role in Twin Peaks, as opposed to ABC "comedy" Desperate Housewives.
This time the recap episode played like a DVD bonus feature, which was way more appropriate given the long storylines involved. The Cuse and Lindelof interviews also provided more insight into the writers' intentions, which was helpful. Most hardcore fans have likely already spotted all of the Easter eggs that were revealed, but I can see how more casual viewers may have found that segment enlightening. I was grateful that the episode did not rely solely on Season Three footage; that would have been tiresome, wouldn't it?
I thought that Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse did a great job as spokesmen for the show. Their humorous take on the characters and events was refreshing. Perhaps later recap episodes will continue in this direction, with various cast and crew members acting as hosts. A Lost special hosted by Locke and Ben would be serious appointment television.

I couldn't disagree more. It was a complete waste of 60 minutes for the "regular" LOST viewer.
This was like an infomercial for LOST. The target was people who have never watched LOST.
The smart thing for ABC to do, if they wanted to bring in new viewers, would have been to air this as segments on Good Morning America.
It's been 3 months since the last LOST. While I didn't see the need for a "where are we now" episode, it would have been more valuable for the LOST fan. I felt as if Cuse and Lindelof were talking down to the viewer.
I spent my time watching AI and the Duke-UNC game until 10pm.

Eh, I still found it to be throwaway. All the "serious" fans I've talked to who watched agreed - anything they said in the recap last night can't be taken at face value. They were giving broad outlines of the characters and plotlines, and their comments were more "from a viewer's perspective" than anything else.
I wouldn't deeply analyze anything they said, and from what I heard (though I'll admit I banished it to 'background noise' after a while), they really didn't add any new information. So, yeah, it was probably good for new viewers or casual viewers, but I don't think there was anything there for "hardcore fans." And especially not the kind of fans who write comments longer than the posts they're commenting on..... *cough*

I haven't been a Lost viewer, but decided that I am going to tune in.
The guide was helpful considering that it needed to cover complicated plots and characters over 1.5 seasons.
I assume the guide was meant for people like me who have never watched the series and wanted to understand it. Of course I would have liked more, but it gave me enough information and I tuned-in to the 10 PM show. So in that regard, the guide was a success.
I will definitely have to catch the first season so that I am 100% caught up. Thanks ABC. Now if you can reduce the number of commercials--19 minutes worth--I would be a bigger fan of broadcast TV.

I'm saying this with a tremendous amount of respect for you but are you high?
They are the WORST spokepersons this show has ever had imho.

I've been watching Lost since the beginning and I enjoyed the recap show. It got me in the mood to watch the new episode and was a good little refresher course for a show that hasn't been on for four months.

I also meant to say that I have never watched any of the other recap shows because I assumed they were just lame clip shows but I watched this one specifically because Lindelof and Cuse were on it. Maybe it is because I am getting old but between 24 and BSG and the other hour-long, serial type dramas I watch on a regular basis, it does get hard to keep track of every little detail of what has happened in previous episodes/seasons. I guess I could go over to TWOP and check out their recaps but the clip show was jsut fine.

I really enjoyed the recap show. I do not recall seeing Hurley in a room with kids in soccer uniforms with "the numbers" on them.
I always miss stuff!
One thing I noticed was the use of the phrase 'Easter eggs'. Apparently, that's all these overlaps in the back stories are. No grand conspiracy at all, just life.

Watching those two and how pleased they are with themselves was pretty distasteful. Great chemistry though, real cute.
But the lack of explanation as to how The Others went from untrackable superhunters to Keystone Cops unable to find people in a tiger trap.
The show is just plain lame. It's one good actor swirling in a toilet bowl of bad actors and worse writing. Run, Matthew Fox, before it's too late.

I have been watching Lost since season 1, ep 1 too, and I am (in the minority I guess) of people who really didn't like that recap episode. I'll echo an earlier poster and say it came off as a cheese-induced informercial.
I think the reason why I didn't like it so much was because there seems to be a ton of revisionist history in the recap, with the excising of several key characters:
- Michael and Walt, which at times was a huge part of the driving plotline, completely gone. Only side ref to them was Walt's photo on Hurley's 2 litres of milk (have u seen this child).
- Boone and Shannon. Never liked the Shannon character, but Boone's death was a big part of Locke's progression. And Sahid's "love" was featured in the recap... but his love for the Iraqi woman prisoner - not for falling in love with Shannon and her being killed.
- Ana Lucia. Gone.
- Libby - gone.
A few others not mentioned either at all. I mean, what the heck happened to the dog.
It's like they're just going to pretend these characters never existed. At least that's the sense I got from the recap, and that just pissed me off.

I could not agree with you more. Revisionist history indeed ...
What about Rose and Bernard? Ostensibly gone.
Danielle ...gone. Wasn't it assumed she was Alex's mother by the way?
It is clear that the producers are tyrign to salvage any sort of an audience by remolding an action/adventure love story out of a mysterious, sci-fi drama.

Having worked on clip shows in the past I can tell you with 100% certainty that the missing characters (Michael, Walt, Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia, Libby) are all actors that the producers are no longer willing to pay. It's sad, but it really is that simple.

There were so many plotlines I had forgotten. I was happy for the recap.

I'm sure Murray is right.
also, in the case of a serialized show like this, the idea is to get you up to speed so that the upcoming plotlines make more sense. There was no need for the tailies, or the rutherfords, or michael and his son. they only had 40 minutes. i do admit leaving out danielle was weird, but i think crying 'revisionist history' is a bit much.
i thought the idea was great, adding some of the spirit of the podcasts to make it a little more interesting than your average 'clip show'. it seemed more like a dvd extra than an infomercial to me.

I've introduced a few friends to "LOST" over the past weeks and months and the recap show was a great way to bring them up to speed. Unless you've watched the series from season one, you won't understand every little detail and story line, but the recap was a good way of trying to capture new viewers. When the articles say "Fans have been complaining" I wonder if the "fans" they are talking about need to step back and remember this is only a story... only TV. I love the reruns everynow and then...gives me a chance to see something I missed. So sit back and enjoy it for what it is. A clever, well written show... and kudos for deciding it needs only to go 5 seasons. Builds the excitement as to how will it all play out!

@ Mark,
I agree with you comment about Michael and Walt. To leave out those two, who btw, lead us to the Others (Walt's kidnapping, Michaels murderous shocking ways in the hatch) is totally insane, totally disappointing. Michael's story line lead us to season 2's finale. Lost can be so damn frustrating at times.
