(S03E07) It was a long wait, but "Not in Portland" definitely built up a momentum for the next fifteen weeks. We got our first Other-centric flashback, courtesy of Juliet, and a better sense of the pecking order (and family structure) on the "other" island. Plus Sawyer got to use a whole mess o' nicknames!
After this episode, Juliet has become even more intriguing. Anyone who can impregnate male field mice and maintain a professional relationship with an ex has got my respect. Dr. Juliet Burke was once a meek fertility genius working for her ex-husband at Miami Central University. When she wasn't fidgeting nervously, she was performing secret experiments on her own sister, who badly wanted a child. On a side note, am I the only one who had trouble picturing Juliet married to Zeljko Ivanek? The minute I saw his name in the credits, I knew there was going to be trouble (watch the "Roland" episode of The X-Files if you don't believe me). Juliet was a bit of a mouse herself in her pre-island days, and you have to wonder what happened during the subsequent 3 years, 2 months, and 28 days that made her a cold-blooded killer.
It appears that Mittelos Bioscience had a hand in Juliet's transformation. The "Portland-based" company recruited her under shady circumstances (did anyone notice Ethan outside Juliet's sister's apartment?), presumably separating her from her now-pregnant sister. Any guesses as to what illness sis was suffering from? FYI, there is already a website for Mittelos Bioscience for those of you who are interested (I'm not sure of its origin, though). I was hoping that Nestor Carbonell would use his Suddenly Susan accent in his role as Dr. Alpert, but no dice. How convenient that he forgot about Juliet's desire for her ex to get hit by a bus so soon after the ex was actually hit by a bus! At least Ethan Rom was there with tissues to make the entire scene extra creepy. This new company adds yet another dimension to the DHARMA mystery, something that I hope this season will touch on.
Back to the island. Thanks to Jack's OR stunt, Sawyer and Kate got a tour of the Other island, and it certainly was educational. During a brief shootout with Pickett and his minions, Alex showed up to offer some assistance. The trio hid under a camouflaged trap door that I'm convinced was an homage to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. There were, of course, some strings attached to the rescue. Save Karl, save the world, or something to that effect. Alex, convinced that her boyfriend was being kept alive, took Sawyer and Kate to the last possible place he could be. Unfortunately for Karl, it was also the scariest possible place he could be. After tricking and beating a guard, played by Mac from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the group found Karl being given the Clockwork Orange treatment. Strapped to a chair, Karl was being made to watch a hugely disturbing (and confusing) array of words and images. Among the phrases: "God loves you as He loved Jacob"; "We are the causes of our own suffering; and, "Think about your life." Hopefully Karl will survive the trip back to the island with Kate and Sawyer, if only to shed some light on that video.
Let's not forget about Jack, though. The man had to process a ton of information in a short amount of time--two islands, Ben waking up, Juliet turning on him only to change the game plan again, plus the small matter of spinal surgery. Why was Jack's unintentional slip-up during the operation necessary so soon after his intentional mistake? Was there not enough dramatic tension at the moment? Jack also got some male bonding in with Tom, who seemed keen to get to know Jack as well. Could there be another love triangle in the works? OK, probably not. Ultimately, Jack saved Ben and successfully removed the tumor. He also got Juliet to tell him how Ben persuaded her to help Sawyer and Kate--with the promise to let her leave the island. Mittelos Bioscience must have a strict employment contract.
The best moment of the episode had to have been when Juliet killed Pickett. Someone had to get the Death Pool rolling. That beach scene was one of the most effective parts of the entire episode. Kate's final conversation with Jack made her true feelings a bit clearer, and Sawyer noticed. The parallel between Jack's sacrifice for Kate and Alex's decision to stay on the island to spare Karl and appease her "Dad," Ben, was a nice touch.
So many questions! Will Karl survive? Will Kate return to save Jack after all? Will anyone mourn Pickett's death? I think we all know the answer to that last one. Until next week!

I saw Ethan immediately and sadly, the bus was given away. Also, the logo for the bioscience company was similar to Dharma so it's some sort of affiliate. These clues were a little too obvious for me. But the big question that has been answered, in my opinion, is that we are in reality as opposed to a dream or purgatory. We now know for sure that people were intentionally sent to the island for research purposes. Could be an interesting 15 weeks ahead!

Jack's second unintentional slip up added power and purpose to Kate's emotional recount of their first conversation. That scene was quite nicely done I thought.

I actually thought the retelling of the story was really forced. I mean it was a nice moment, dramatically, and I get that Jack had to ask her a question where she could lie without the others knowing, if she were really in trouble. But for it to be a two minute story, and for her to tell it when she was standing right next to Juliet (who had a gun and could shoot her the second she finished the story) made no sense.

I saw Ethan as well - but when I saw him I thought that we were in a flashback from Earlier on the island - and when her sister said that she liked it on the beach I still thought it was in a DHARMA facility on the Island - then she opened the blinds.
Also : Mittelos is an anagram for Lost Time.

Damn it! Why did I think that Danny's name was Jacob. Who's Jacob now? I need a score card.
Hopes out of the pool.
Love the Micro Deadwood reunion. Can Clench and Swengen come back in flashbacks?

This episode was okay, but it highlights the main problem for me in season 3: The others have turned from a creepy, mysterious, panic-inducing set of poeple who you don't want to come in contact with to a highly complex, creepy, but ulitmately non panic- inducing group of individuals. With the producers showing the power stuggles and exposing us to the others in a more personal way, they have, for me, taken away that feeling of uncertainty and dread that was present when they first appeared. For instance, Tom/Zeke was scary as heck when he appeared out of nowhere to take Walt, shoot Sawyer, and appeared out of nowhere in the jungle to stop our heroes' progress towards finding Michael. Now in season 3, we see Tom chatting it up and being chummy with Jack. And the character of Pickett has turned my opinion of the others from menacing people into brutish hotheads that simply follow one messed up creepy dude called Ben Linus. As for Juliet, turning her from a potentially uncertain enemy (for all we knew, she could have been the real brains behind this stuff) into a sympathetic patsy reveals a menacing trait about the others, but it's something that doesn't really surpise me and now takes Juliet out of running as the potential person behind everything. Now obviously it is only seven episodes in and anything can happen, but does anyone really feel that sense of uncertainty with dealing with the others anymore? I am sure the eyepatch dude will make things interesting again.

Great episode. Kate may not be able to come back for Jack, but that's not saying that Sawyer can't come back to get a little bit of payback, and that Kate can't come with him for that purpose.
Also, Jacob was the one who made the list that Ana Lucia found, I think. However, I think the video was referring to a biblical Jacob. Man, that video in Room 23 was very freaky and killed any theories that Ben might really be a good guy who's just very motivated. Even so, he's still one of my favorite characters.
I can't wait to see Sayid go all military on these guys, especially Ben.

Frustrating bit of dialogue from the episode:
Jack: So, if you can get off the island, why didn't you just take him to a clinic?
Tom: Well, you see, ever since the sky turned purple...
[Jack slices artery and things go haywire.]
Such a tease.

I think we've certainly been given a lot of progress with some of the mysteries in this episode: The question of how long The Others lived on the island: Born on it, or outcasts from The Dharma Initiative...and it looks like a little bit of both. We also finally found out if The Dharma Initiative was a program still in progress: it was supposed to have been canceled due to some disaster in the 80's or 70's and Juliet was recruited in 2001. I know it may not even be Dharma, but a completely new program by Hanso.
Did anyone else feel a little disappointed by not having Alex spend just a little bit more time with Kate so that Kate could tell her, "Ben's not your father, but I know who your mother is!" Also, did anyone see Alex in action and think, "like mother, like daughter! "

Well, I MAY have got some faith back in LOST. I'm glad I watched. I wasn't going to.
I STILL want to know what the black cloud monster is and WHAT is with the polar bear's and something invisible knocking down trees in the first season?
Maybe I WILL make it to the end of this mess after last night's episode. Kind of cool seeing something about the Others.

An OK but preictable ep IMHO.
The producers seem to have made the desicion to widen the number of characters integral to the plot line. This allows for more eps to be produced, but may well make the who story more confusing to most viewers. And a confused viewer may begin to start missing eps.

Alex`s mother is the French woman Rousseau`s daughter. she was taken as a toddler when her ship crashed on the island. From the episode I gather that Ben must have her believing he is her dad.

Once Danielle realizes that there is a second island, and her daughter is there, Kate won't have to go back. I'm sure Danielle will handle things.
Alex' father was part of Danielle's team, correct? He died. It's not Ben...or is it?

Good episode. It didn't start with a bang, but it built momentum and delivered. I thought that Juliet's back story was quite interesting, too. And I don't know if it's just because MC Gainey is the man, but Tom is now one of my favorite characters. Ben waking up on the operating table was creepy as hell.
Call me naive, but I think Edmund getting hit by a bus thing was coincidence, or fate. Fate is definitely a theme on the show, and it wouldn't be the first time something "convenient" happened to get somebody on the island. I don't buy the overwhelming conspiracy bit, either.
Also, i don't think the Others are DHARMA/Mittleos. I think that Juliet, Ethan and others were doing research on the island and their guinea pigs turned against them. It would make sense if Ben actually was born on the island for him to be one of those "guinea pigs."
One last thought? Wouldn't it have been cool if Alex came back with Sawyer and Kate, and Claire recognized her?

This episode officially brought me back on board. I've been really wavering on this show, especially since I really didn't get involved until the beginning of season 3 (watched 1 and 2 on DVD in a two week binge session). I felt like we've been getting dicked around pretty hard with little or no progress being made on many of the threads to the narrative.
Kudos to Dr. Funbags though on the anagram. That's baller, and most definitely not a conincidence. I also agree with Reuven at #9 that Tom's little cast off remark about the sky was pretty frustrating.
The whole Milettos thing really points to the Dharma initiative being some sort of separatist/utopian movement, or renegade scientific group (see: The Village). Clearly this group will do whatever is necessary to keep their "thing" working right, as they've held Juliet hostage and perpetrated all sorts of other nastiness. My worry is that this is too obvious of a theory though, and that the producers are just going to swing another 180 on us, which would be upsetting as hell.
