(S02E15) No sense in getting into the circumstances about Reid's abduction. I'm assuming that if you've come back to read this, then you saw the spectacular first part that aired after the Super Bowl.
More than anything else, this episode was all about Reid. It's the first time we really got some explanations about his past, his childhood, and what it was like to grow up in his house. It has me a little worried though. Why's that? Because it reminded me a lot of this season's premiere episode. And we all know what that led to - the downfall of Elle.
I'm not saying Reid is being written out of the show as Elle was. They'd be crazy to get rid of him, but it does seem that he's being sent down a dark path. For those that caught the very last few seconds of the episode, Reid stole the drugs from Tobias' pocket. They made him hallucinate and it seems that it brought back memories of his mother.
I understand why he wants them but is he going to become addicted? I'd say yes or why else have him take them? There was an interesting line earlier in the episode though, right before Tobias injected Reid. He said to him, "Tell me it doesn't help and I won't do it." Reid stayed silent. That's the moment right there. It says a lot and it's definitely the one thing we need to take away from this episode because I think it's going to be important as we watch Reid for the rest of the season.
Two other things stood out in this episode. The first was Gideon. We saw him pacing in the bathroom following his decision to stop Tobias' video from hitting the internet. He was pacing and talking to himself, justifying his choice out loud. It was a really cool scene and they cut it back and forth to Tobias pacing around in the graveyard, wrestling with his three personalities. I think it just says something about the demons we all have. I don't know, maybe I'm reading into this too much but I just thought it was really cool. We've never really seen Gideon like that before.
The second thing was JJ and her reaction to the entire situation. She blames herself for Reid's capture and to top it off, it seems she doesn't really have the stomach for the gory/bloody stuff that the BAU team encounters on a daily basis. So who knows what's going to happen to her, but I'm loving the way they developed some of the characters over this two episode arc. Criminal Minds continues to impress.

i've only started watching this show recently, but this was a really great episode. definitely sticking with this show now. i was pretty excited to watch it since the preview after sundays show was hyping it up well, and it actually lived up to it.
it will be interesting to see what happens to reid now... i don't think they'll go down the path they did with elle (they only did that because the actress wanted to leave i think?) but it could be good character development to see how far he falls and what the team does to help him. if he does continue with that drugs, that is.
also, major props to van der beek, he really did pull off the psycho 3 personality killer extremely well.

Great show it kept me on the edge of my seat. It is only going to get better with Ried taking the drugs at the end of the show. Cant wait until next week.

I am disappointed in the direction this show is going. In sitcoms when the show starts to falter they have a wedding or a birth, in the Criminal Minds genre they have someone get addicted (think Martin in Without a Trace). The violence in this two parter was gratuitous and Criminal Minds has lost a viewer that has been watching this show since the beginning. I have better things to do on a Wednesday night.

I also hope that it doesn't lead to him being written off the show - he's the main reason I find the show more interesting that the standard crime show (and Mandy Patinkin, of course). Though, if it leads to more interaction between Reid and his mother, that would be great - she's an interesting character, and a great bit of casting.

Ok correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Reid and JJ have a little thing way back in the very first or second episode of the first season? He got redskins tickets and they went to the game and then we heard nothing about that story line. Why didn't they do something with that in this episode? Other than that, fantastic.

I loved the interaction between JJ and Derek. When she asked him if he blamed her and he basically said yes. Then at the end the smug look she gave him. WTG JJ!! I think (ie HOPE) that that interaction between them will play out. She is so not Derek's favorite person.
As far as JJ reaction to the blood and gore, she isn't a field agent. She isn't supposed to be. Garcia had a hard time with it too. It'll be interesting to see how JJ's reaction to it all will play out though.

GREAT review Jonathan!
I've just got into this show this season and I think it's great. I'm a big fan of Mandy Patinkin and the other players just add to him.
Get RID of Garcia though!!! NOT REID! How much longer do we have to put up with her and Caterpillar Eyebrows flirting. It makes me more nauseous than the gore in this episode!!!

Did anyone else notice how the newest agent had no reaction to the gore? It was kind of creepy when they asked her how she stomached it and she had no response? What was up with that? I thought she seemed like a psycho....

No one has anything to say about the Emily not flinching at all? This case was gory beyond the norm. After she tried to comfort? JJ about being uncomfortable with the blood and gore she was asked why it didn't bother her. She just came from office work into the field and she didn't even flinch. Why is that? Is she some kind of psycho, too? Have I been watching crime shows too long and that is why I suspect her?

Reid has always been a weird guy -- not too much known about him and his oddly robotic human interaction. I thought the flashbacks to his early life to be VERY insightful (sort of reminded me of the LOST flashbacks.) Reid's taking of the drugs was absolutely in character -- he does not know how to interact with other people, let alone gain insights into his own psyche. This should be good.

I didn't like the content of the show last night. I think the story line was good but I don't understand why they had to show so much gore. If this show continues to go in this direction I will stop watching it.

This show was full of gore, much more than usual and I was questioning that after the Super Bowl. But, then when I watched both episodes last night, (without trying to shift gears from Super Bowl fever), I really got into it. I would not like to see every episode this intense, but maybe it was needed for us to see what each character was truly made of, and we found out.
We came away with a different aspect about each character, we learned something about them and I love getting more and more background of the BAU team.
I knew Reid would choose THE one to die that would understand HIS message!! That was brilliant! That is where Reid always shines, his mind is his greatest tool.
As someone said JJ and Garcia are not use to the field and they were beyond crazy with depair. I love both of their characters. Garcia is the only one in the world that can be in front of those computers, they are the works of her blood, sweat and tears.
I miss Elle alot, I can't get use to Paget, time will tell. Maybe the poster above has something when they said maybe there is something going on with her. She seemed to just storm in there and got this job, odd to say the least.
I also don't want Reid to go the addiction route as that is what we love about Reid, his mind!!! Don't screw with his mind!!
This is going to be interesting and I hope they picked up alot of new viewers. I see a poster here is giving up due to the violence, but this was one show and I think they made it as HORRIBLE as they could so that we could see how each member of the BAU team handled the worst of the worst.
I missed Season 1, but have seen a few repeats. I picked up Season 2 and I love it. I just hope the Neilsen families feel like I do.
Would someone post the ratings here from this week as they come in? I don't know where to find this information, can someone tell me? I usually come across it by accident somewhere way down the road and I am truly anxious to see how this show did this week (both episodes).

This episode, though fantastic, was quite possibly the most psychologically disturbing single episode I have ever seen in all of the crime shows. I watch a whole hell of a lot of crime shows. I have at least one, and often two or more, on every day of the week. This scared the hell out of me, in a way that is not quite the norm. It demonstrates how everyone has demons, like you said, and how close to 'crazy' we all really are. If you compare the lives, the pasts, of the people finding the serial killers to the serial killers themselves, there is a disturbing amount of similarity. Tobias' father was insane and abusive. Reids mother was insane and his father was absent. And guilt. Guilt was Tobias' stressor, no? His father asked him to kill him. But what about Reid? He sent his mother away to the loony bin at the tender young age of eighteen.
I have a point, I promise.
THE POINT!!
The writers of Criminal Minds have made an effort, I think, to impress upon us that there was a metaphorical fork in the road at some time in the life of profiler and profiled alike, and that they simply chose differently. They also impress, however, that the other fork is never out of reach.
This is rather frightening. Reid, as has been said time and time again, is rather on the intelligent side. What if this was his stressor? If anyone could get away with murder, serial or no, it would be Dr. Spencer Reid, of the BAU. He could make sure he never left a trace, he could kill in a way that did not match his own profile, and a number of other things. They would never know. And what about other people's stressors?
JJ's? Morgan's? Gideons?
Just something to consider.
Ok, slightly hysterical emo rant over.
Is anyone else extraordinarily disappointed in Reid for going back for the drugs? I mean, it was expected, it would have been unrealistic, almost, if he didn't... but honestly. Isn't the poor guy screwed up enough without having heroine with a psychadellic (?) chaser on his list of things gone wrong?

Glad to see I'm not the only one who missed out on the last 10 minutes of Part 2. I could have screamed. I'm in Ottawa, Canada. Televisions just went black. So Dr. Reid stole the drugs from Tobias? Wow! As far as Emily (Paget), I just cannot tolerate her character right from the beginning. Whether she cannot act, and she is supposed to put on this 'don't care' persona, Elle was just so much better. Somebody bring her back pleeeease. Who did this casting anyway. Even JJ is not that great at acting. Not much emotion at all. As far as Garcia, she adds so much colour and light-heartedness to some very serious subjects. The show would not be the same without her. I look forward to this program every week. My favourite by far.

About that, the thing that most people don't know is that drugs affect geniuses differently that just normal people. An average person can take a certain drug and get the high, but an overly intelligent person with more brain connections going on will experience a different kind of escape, one less easy to rid oneself of (because they are more prone to addiction because they are more compulsive than others.)
THIS is why Dr. Spencer Reid's actions of taking the heroin from Tobias's pockets makes it ten times more real. I believe this will affect later episodes in the introduction of his addiction. The compulsive hallucinations will affect his personality and ability to profile if the writers are true-to-life, which most can only hope they will be for accuracy's sake.
This is by far, my most favorite episode and I pray they continue on the path they have begun. May this episode bring more drama as it has the potential to produce!
Lastly, I think this episode exemplifies (the incredible edible) Matthew Gray Gubler (actor portaying: 'Reid')in the pinnicle of his acting abilities. The scene in particular I draw back upon is the flashback to the age of 18, sending his mother away. This is just an example of this episode's amazing acting on his part. Also, his reaction to the unsub himself (or... themselves, I guess) The situation with the loaded gun to Reid's head, "Choose one to die." It was like Russian Roulette without the chance to survive. With each answer of 'no,' and each fruitless pulling of the trigger The suspense was imminent! His portrayal in this scene makes me in complete awe.
Not to take the credit away from the other actors, though. Because a BAU agent was in mortal jeopardy, it allowed the specific suspence to be created by the cast. The BAU crew fell right into Tobias's play when the video came on; this episode gave insight into each character's inner turmoil on the situation.

I absolutely loved this most recent episode. Reid is by far my favourite character in a show full of interesting personalities, so it was nice to get those glimpses into his past. Of course, it made it even more difficult to watch the poor guy being tortured.
I've noticed that a couple of people have stated that they found this episode overly gory and disturbing compared to the prior episodes. My response to that would be "What the heck?!"
There've been several episodes that either depicted or described such acts of cruelty and/or torture that I had to stop watching. Revelations" (with the exception of the three dogs attacking "Jezebel") was not, in my opinion, as bad as some previous episodes. I found "Natural Born Killer" and "No Way Out" to be so stomach-turning that I couldn't even finish watching either episode.
Anyway, I think it was great that J.J. got a bigger role than usual, and I'll be interested to see how this experience with the dogs affects her character in the future.
And speaking of future episodes, the writers have guaranteed that people such as myself are going to be sure to tune in and find out what happens with Reid and the drug issue. I could have sworn that it was Dilaudid that he was given, not heroin, but I'm probably misunderstanding.
In short, I thought that "Revelations", particularly the second part, fits my idea of a perfect thriller.

I have been a faithful Criminal Minds watcher from the beginning. I really hope that the next story line is not going to show Dr. Reid becoming addicted to drugs. Yes his character has had a complicated background but that doesn't always have disastrous outcomes. These characters do have serious, difficult, heavy careers but it would be nice to see some normal personal lives. The real life average for as many people as in the regular cast would have some normal situations, even people in law enforcement. It would be nice to add that to the dramatic criminal story lines. It is a great show.

I was struck by the closing song in the show....when Reid was bending over Tobias, they played a song that sounded like Cold Play in the beginning, but the voice didn't sound like the guy in Cold Play. Anyone know the name of that song?
