(S03E12) This was probably exactly the kind of episode that The CW executives want to see go away from Veronica Mars. It was definitely the kind of episode that you'd really need a fair amount of prior involvement with the series to understand, and that's not including the few details we got regarding the primary mystery of Dean O'Dell's death. But for me, I say keep them coming.
Finally Veronica learned to start confronting people when she hears rumors about them instead of simply continuing to lose sleep and making up scenarios in her head ... which she of course did anyway.
It's interesting how Veronica took the preacher's words to heart when reconsidering having Madison's car crushed, but she still holds a grudge against Logan ... again. And another typical move by Veronica, she deletes Logan's voicemail message before getting the whole story. Then again, it was pretty pathetic, so maybe everyone was better off there.
Oh, and you know that tuna smell from the air vents will come up again later.
I gotta ask again: Where's Wallace? I swear TA Tim is getting more screen time than Wallace these days, and Percy Daggs is in the freaking credits. I know they said they were cutting down costs, but wow. At least we got to see Weevil back to some of his old ways, which I really have to say I've missed.
Some great hidden references in this episode with Veronica's aliases: Hester (as in Prynne) from 'The Scarlet Letter', for example. And of course "Carson Drew's" assistant, Nancy.
It seems Tim may actually be off the hook for O'Dell's death, seeing as he's investigating it and all. Though wouldn't he be finding Veronica as a possible suspect, seeing as the death resembled her paper that he graded? My money now is on O'Dell's older son now, as his presence in this episode just didn't seem to be a coincidence at all; it felt very clue-like. Now I need to wonder why the egg residue on O'Dell's car was something of a clue.
Quote of the episode:
Veronica: "I feel like you've got this wadded up Maxim magazine where your heart is supposed to be."

I thought the Veronica getting out of bed topless from behind shot at the beginning was a cheap ratings ploy... and keep 'em coming.

@Bill, i agree. We need more episodes like the one where they were at the pool. Ah, season 1.
Anyhow, i thought it was a good episode. im still sick and tired of logan and really thought we'd be done with him but alas, not the case.
I think the wife is the killer. If its the son, this episodes 'introduction' was an non discreet way of showing him. He had to have makeup and black painted nails. Cliches abound.
No Wallace and no Mac makes me something something.
And Hester wasn't that hidden. I mean, she was pregnant and going to a priest. If the dad's name was Arthur it would have been cooler. That was a great book.

The single-episode mysteries have gotten too easy to figure out... I knew who the culprit in this week's show was the second we met her. Of course, she wasn't an obvious suspect, but she had no other reason for appearing on screen.

The egg was a clue because Nish (sp?) said she egged his Volvo. Yet O'Dell's wife said he didn't have the Volvo that night; he was driving the mini-van. The egg proves that the Volvo was there, though. So either she's lying about the mini-van or someone drove the Volvo there that night too.
I think the son is too obvious. VM isn't usually that obvious on the big mysteries.

So to clarify - this is still the 2nd mystery for this season, and once it's resolved, all remaining eps will be standalone?

Yeaaah... the single ep mysteries are becoming rather scooby-doo like in their formula. At least we have the long arcs to keep us interested, right? Right?

Yeah, I'm really going to miss the Veronica of old once they start trying to appeal to the masses (rather than their fans) and do only stand-alone episodes. And pp said it - this one was way too easy to figure out. I mean, come on, a female had to get the pill!
Also, I thought from the moment Dean O'dell mentioned his troubled son that the son would be the murderer. Now, I'm hoping I'm wrong because it was obvious they were heading that way last night too. But then again, VM is known for their Red Herrings.
PS - more Mac and Wallace! And give Logan something to do other than hang at his pad all the time.

Oh my God, people why not actually WATCH the stand-alone episodes before deciding the show has forsaken you in favour of some anonymous mob. Give peace a chance.

I thought it was the priest until the end so what do I know. I liked this better than the monkey one. What if it is Tim and the "investigation" is to make sure all the loose ends are tied up?

Again with the whining and wheezing about the stand along episodes.
It's been well explained why the last 5 are stand alone.
When Veronica only got picked up for 20 instead of 22 episodes, Rob Thomas decided rather than compress a 7 episode arc into 5, to do stand alones. This was done to avoid compromising the integrity of the pre-planned arc, not to appeal to the "masses". Just like the mini-mysteries were original a plan to not screw over VM fans if the show didn't get picked up for full season, they didn't want to leave people with a never-resolved cliffhanger.
If (hopefully when) VM gets picked up for season 4, I would expect the mini-arcs to continue, at least for however many episodes the initial order is.
On a side note, anyone know what the VM ratings are now that college kids in Neilson families are being sampled? The news report I saw said Gilmore Girls went up 50%, but didn't mention VM.
