The previews hammered it home a thousand times this past week: this episode of Studio 60 would be the one that "America will be talking about." So I have to ask America: are you talking about it this morning?
I don't bring this up to dig into the episode specifically (though the two-part "Harriet Dinner" episode was certainly the worst so far). I like the show. I bring it up to point out that network promos these days are overdone, overhyped, misleading and/or confusing. They usually don't make sense or are disappointing when it comes to everything from ER to Lost, but this one was truly odd. Why would America be talking about this episode when America hasn't really been talking about the show so far? The moment they were talking about, I assume it was the kiss between Danny and Jordan? OK, nice moment, and the second part of this ep was better than the first by a longshot, but I hardly think it's something that we're talking about in any major way. Danny and Jordan aren't Sam and Diane yet, or Dave and Maddie.
Maybe they meant Ugly Betty star America Ferrera?

Good points, Bob. I didn't see Studio 60 this week, but I feel for television producers -- who must cringe when they see what marketing promises in a lot of these previews these days.

I told my wife about what she missed from last week's episode (locked on the roof, snake loose, guy lying to girl before first date, etc.) and realized there was no way Sorkin could have jammed another television cliche into it, so we both skipped last night.

The only thing anyone MIGHT be talking about is how this show seems to be getting worse, its ratings are tanking, and it's headed to hiatus and probably cancellation.
How can anyone talk about a show if no one is watching it?

The next time America talks about Studio 60, it will be when the bell finally tolls. Even then, you'll barely hear a peep. This show is toast.

ugh, i think i'm done with s60 after yesterdays episode. i was a huge fan the first few weeks but it has just gone downhill for the past couple episodes (couple?). i'm not sure what sorkin was trying to do here, but it's not working. this certainly pales in comparison to his previous works.
that said, this show did turn me into a massive matthew perry fan. if it does get canned i hope he can get another show quickly.

I don't usually watch Studio 60 when it airs on NBC. I watch it later in the week on NBC. After Heroes goes off, we're usually ready to take a break for a little while.

Hey, c'mon, all the segments with Timothy Busfield dealing with the viper, the ferret, the coyote, and then the PETA like official were hilarious. The animal handler's dead pan deliveries were spot on. Busfield glowed with energy. I also liked D. L. Hughley's scenes with the writer. The violist sparkled as well.

Look, it's time to call it like it is. This show doesn't work. Sorkin is entitled to a dud now and then -- he's not perfect. This show fails to capture the behind the scenes TV world the way "Sportsnight" did, and it's not nearly as intellectually challenging and emotionally involved as "The West Wing." "Studio 60" is simply a failure. NBC can try all it wants to make it seem like appointment TV, but it's not. I believe the actors have all done better work on other shows. There's nothing compelling to keep us riveted to this hour. I only tune in because I'm not a "CSI Miami" fan and don't like "What About Brian?" In other words, it's filler.
As much as NBC may want to keep Sorkin happy, this is like CBS's deal with John Wells and "Smith." They want to work with Wells, but they pulled the plug on "Smith" because it didn't click with the audience. I bet next year Wells and CBS will try again with a new project. That's what NBC should be doing with Sorkin.

The problem is there's a load of good actors being completely wasted there.
I'm sure it could have been a really good show if they'd concentrated more on the characters that have got personality - pretty much everyone except Sarah Paulson - I think she was a horrendous miscasting & her stories (/all of them/) & the whimsey crap that meant this show didn't know whether to be a comedy or a drama (& missed the mark on both, only the actors saved the crassness) have detracted from what is a really neat ensemble cast.

I agree with radwimp -- I may not be able to stomach another Studio 60 after the last 2 eps. I've watched every show since it began, but things are going downhill with amazing speed. "The Kiss" was the only good part of the show. When Danny read Jordan's note, that caught my attention - only time during the hour. I never watched The West Wing, so can't compare anything of Sorkin's with Studio 60. I just know that I'm so disappointed because S60 hasn't been the "blockbuster" I had envisioned.

Anyone else notice that, ahem, we are all talking about Studio 60? The promos were right, in that sense.
Personally I love this show. I think if it had a better timeslot and a better lead-in, it would perform better. I also think that it would be a ton better if there wasn't the impending doom of 'cancellation any minute.' Sorkin can't do what he does best because he doesn't know if the show will end under his terms. This show simply has not had time to grow.
I agree that if nothing else, this show has given me a new found respect for Matthew Perry. I am amazed at what he has been able to do with the character, in spite of Sarah Paulson's best efforts to keep his stories dull (She is by far the most unconvincing person on the show).

That's a false positive. We're only talking about it because we are TV geeks. The rest of the country is asking, "Aaron who?"
I just looked at all my Studio 60 posts, and you can see where I get more and more disappointed until I just stop watch.
Last night? Family Guy reruns.

Oh, and as an addendum, Heroes is an awesome show, and gets great ratings, etc etc. I love it. But I think, in general, its demo is way wrong to be followed up by Studio 60.
I have no idea what a good lead-in for S60 would be, however. This is why I'm not in charge of a network.
Then again, most of the people in charge of networks don't have a clue either.

TV promos are awful in general. NBC decided that "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World" was a catchphrase, when it wasn't. But they shoved it down our throats enough that we all know it, and for me it's one of the few things about Heroes that I don't like.
The worst, though, were the old WB promos for the Gilmore Girls. It'd always be "Tonight, on an all new Gilmore Girls..." and then they show something that happens at 8:55. Worst of all, they'd show that promo at 7:59 right before the episode started, so it was hard to avoid, and fresh in your mind.
In general I try to avoid them entirely, just cause they're annoying and spoilery. By this point in the season I watch the shows I watch, and skip the shows I don't. So the only way a promo's going to change my mind is if it's "Tonight, on CSI: Miami, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel guest star as two women who can't stop making out with each other."

how can the show get a better lead in than heroes? i find the interaction between hughley and the kid from accepted to be interesting, but unfortunately its falling on deaf ears. the animal/PETA bits were good but the show in itself is definetly on its way out the door.

All I have to say is, did the Chinese guy have to know how to speak English? I mean seriously, have we not already been inundated with cliche over the past few weeks?
And why is friggin' Bob Sassone back? Jay is far superior- give him back to us TVSquad!
