He looks like Osama bin Laden, Fidel Castro, and Jesus all rolled into one. And when Sean Michel first appeared at the Memphis auditions, I thought he was one of those bizarre bombs the producers were going to drop on us. Instead, Michel surprised us all when he sang an amazing version of Johnny Cash's "God's Gonna Cut You Down."But now it seems that Michel's fifteen minutes in the spotlight may already be up. According to Internet buzz, despite Michel's singing talent, he was disqualified from the competition during the Hollywood round because of his refusal to cut his long locks and shave his scruffy beard.
Reality TV Magazine contacted Sean Michel to discuss the rumor, but Michel was mum due to an Idol confidentiality agreement. However, Michel did confirm that he HASN'T shaved his beard or cut his long hair at all.
If Michel has been disqualified because of his looks, it would be a real shame. He has a great voice, and seems like a nice guy. Of course, I was shocked during Michel's audition when Randy Jackson said, "it doesn't matter what you look like, you can blow." Because all along, Simon Cowell has pointed out -- Idol is an image competition as much as it is a singing competition. My prediction after Michel sang was: "Without a major makeover, Sean will not make it to the Final 12."
If the disqualification rumors are correct, then I applaud Michel's refusal to change who he is for the American Idol producers. While I agree he doesn't look like a typical American Idol, I still think he would be fun to watch in the Final 12. And besides, it seems a little harsh to disqualify a guy for the crime of poor grooming.Ultimately, I think the producers should let the people decide. Let the guy sing. Who knows? Maybe America is ready for an Idol who looks like Fidel Castro.

Well since he willingly tried out for American Idol and not pulled into the audition kicking and screaming that I am aware of, then he should know that it is about finding someone that a majority of the American people see as their "Idol." That means "looking" liking an idol. So applaud all you want for his refusal to cut his hair and beard, but if he wasn't ready to allow his image to altered, then he should not have auditioned in the first place.

Not in the early rounds it isn't, its the judges and producers job. Frankly, I think they did the right thing. If this guy isn't willing to play the game, then get him out of there I say. I certainly don't want my American Idol to look like Fidel Castro. Maybe you do... but I'd venture to guess you'd be in the minority.

"Poor grooming"???
Since when is long hair and a long beard evidence of "poor grooming"? Show me evidence that the guy never showers or bathes or brushes his teeth, and then maybe I'll buy your line of reasoning. Otherwise his long beard and long hair is nothing more than a personal choice, and can only be deemed as an alternative style in relation to our culture's definition of the "normal" and "acceptable".
And since when is poor grooming a "crime", as you so indelicately put it, for that matter?
Hey, Liz - get yr story straight. In one single sentence you laud the man, Sean Michel, for sticking to his stylistic guns, and then accuse him of criminally poor grooming.
So which is it? Is he your hero, or does he disgust you?
I think you expose your true feelings about the man with that "crime of poor grooming" dismissal near the end of the blog entry. I think you could care less about whether or not he's a good singer, and therefore this entire post is meaningless filler.
It oughta be a crime!

I don't see anything wrong with his long hair the man can sing, I think he could be one of the ones to go all the way to the top ten... I think they should just leave him alone and let him go on to the next round. I know I will VOTE for him, give the man a break and let him be.....

your American Idol - that is one scary concept - they don't represent you it's a talent show - one that I watch and while style def plays a factor has anyone seen Fantasia or Bo Bice. How about some other artists who looked a little odd for thier time - like Elvis, Bob Marley (Happy B-Day), George Clinton, Axel, precut Metalica - the guy can sing and he has a look - it may not be boy band but he has a personal style - I say let him sing - and Kira please stop look for representation in TV personalities

hey whiterbread flubby, God's Gonna Cut You Down is a traditional folk tune.
Johnny Cash covered it most recently...
and more on topic, this is bullshit - if america has no problem with it, neither should the producers. now we'll never know.

Dude, Johnny Cash sang the song LONG before Blind Boys of Alabama. The song is considered a traditional hymn and has been covered by a variety of artist.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. This show should be about talent, not looks. Going by your logic, Ruben Studdard wouldn't have been an American idol because he was fat.
What do you define looking like an idol, clean cut? skinny, beautiful/handsome?
Why didn't they make Bo Bice cut his hair?
You think the guy looks like Fidel Castro? really? If Gavin Degraw grew out a beard would you think he looks like Fidel Castro because of the hat? Can you forget about the hat, this guy had some shred of talent which is a lot more than I can say about some "idols" in the past.

AI is well aware that there is a large number of people who would vote this guy through just to screw things up!! They don't dare pass him along to the final ten and leave it up to fools like me with a phone.

I really wish people would stop referring to American Idol as a talent contest because it is not. AI is a TELEVISION PROGRAM and its goal is to get the ratings as high as possible so the network can generate income from the sale of ads.
The Golden Rule applies to applicants. Them with da gold makes da rules. If you don't like it - great - go find another program to get yourself on. If Sean Michael doesn't want to cut his hair, good for him, but AI doesn't have to keep him around, either.

Get with the double standard people. Women singers have to be attractive, while it doesn't matter what male singers look like as long as they're presentable.
And frankly, if he's a good singer then AI doesn't necessarily get to decide when his 15 mins are up.

Hey Scott...listen, I don't need any representation by anyone on any TV show, thank you....hell I don't even vote. All I am saying is that the show's premise is to find the next American Idol, and this guy is not what I personally consider an American Idol. Good singer, yes, but the American Idol, nope.
You can disagree with me all day long for what do I care. The fact remains that the producers are the one's who got to decide if he was American Idol caliber... the didn't... move on. If he has a problem with it, he shouldn't have auditioned. If you have a problem with it... oh well... guess you can change the channel.

The statement "the crime of poor grooming" was meant as sarcasm and did not represent contradictory statements by the author.
As for disqualifying him for not cutting his hair - if it is even true - then they (the judges) should never have passed him on to Hollywood to begin with. If American doesn't want "your american idol" to be a long haired castro impersonator, then they will not vote for him and they will have decided. Of course as was pointed out, they did not think Ruben looked right and he won. They thought Jennifer Hudson was too fat to be an American Idol (yes I know the public voted her out, but they were always telling her that) and she is well on her way to winning an Oscar and has already won a Golden Globe - both much more significant achievments in my mind.
BTW: The hat, beard and shirt are what makes him look like Castro - couldn't really tell you what he looks like.
For the record, if I had a "your American Idol" - they would not look like Kelly Clarkson (when she won), Justin Guarini, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Fantasia, Bo Bice and definitely not Taylor Hicks. So they may as well look like Castro. Maybe like Carrie Underwood - but they certainly wouldn't sing country music either.
