A new DVD, American Idol: Unauthorized, takes aim at the Idol juggernaut, interviewing fans, critics, experts (in what, I'm not sure), and past contestants in an attempt to dig up and reveal behind-the-scene scandals and scoops.I haven't viewed the doc, but according to this review, there's quite a bit of sour grapes whining coming from past Idol rejects. Scott Savol (Season 4) claims creative editing made him appear "lazy." Corey Clark (Season 2) whines about not getting a free hairstylist. And Julia Demato (Season 2) complains that some contestants were given more attention from vocal coaches than others.
According to the Unauthorized filmmakers, the entire show is a scam, rigged from the beginning. A popular conspiracy theory alleges that producers pick their favorites and then "jam" the phone lines on contestants they want to block from getting votes.
The film apparently doesn't back up these allegations with any actual proof, but does claim that more than 2,000 viewers have asked the FCC to investigate Idol. It should be noted that the Unauthorized filmmakers did not contact Fox or producer FremantleMedia to respond to these charges of fraud.
While I doubt American Idol is rigged, I'm sure none of us are shocked by the notion that producers manipulate reality for entertainment purposes. This IS Reality TV, after all. Creative editing is what makes it tick. How could Idol contestants not know that? Don't these people realize that in signing up for such a show, they're basically selling their souls to the TV-Devil? Of course, smart producers are going to tweak the drama for all it's worth, manipulate confrontations, and turn ordinary people into TV-ready characters (villains or heroes). Welcome to Hollywood, Baby.
Even my 10-year-old daughter gets this. The other day, she told me she'd never let our family go on WifeSwap because they would turn her into some hideous she-beast for all of America to mock. "Not even for $25,000?" I asked her. "Not for a million dollars," she replied.
There's only one way to avoid being used and abused by Hollywood producers. Stay out of the game. And if you're going to play, take your loss with dignity. And quit your whining.

I watch Idol, but I can't believe how people place that much importance on it. What does it matter if it's rigged? We're not talking about a presidential election here. Heck, we're not even talking about a student council election. An FCC investigation? Puh-leeze. I wonder how many of these people read a newspaper or watch the news. Terrorism, war, natural disaster make Idol seem even more irrelevant.

Much ado about nothing. I just don't get it.. why don't they find something more useful to do than to bash a popular show. Don't they understand the meaning of 'reality tv'?

Randy Jackson is like a trained seal,in that he looks to Simon for approval or not before he gives a yes or no. Paula seems to be more dependant on the opinion of Simon also this season. The show was more interesting when the opinion was questioned by the three. Also the show would not be the same wiithout Paula. I, along with others, would lose the appetite for Idol.

Rigged? Yes, but in a different way. They want to churn out singer clones, just like all the others. I would like to have a Celebrity AI. Bring on some older singers, and see what the judges say. Barry Manilow doesn't stand a chance. Ditto Paul Anka,Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan...and don't get me started on the women. I'm sick of them saying "not original," when original isn't what they want.

Remember when Ryan and Trista got married and the little brohaha during the bachelor party? I was listening the a radio show in Chicago, and a friend of Ryan's called in. He had gone to the bachelor party, and he told that the producers sort of created the bad situation.
Apparently, if the producers hadn't tried to stir the pot, Ryan and his friends would have sat around drinking beer and discussing the Denver Broncos. Not the sort of stuff that garners high ratings.
So, producers trying to create drama or highlight some contestants isn't new.
I do think that the rigging of the voting is malarkey. I've had trouble getting through, when a contestant is clearly the best. On the other hand, when someone has done poorly, but I want them to stick around, I've had no trouble getting through.

As a former music teacher, I really feel sorry for some of the people that you audition. Why don't you have an elimation by a state contest in each state and then the winners go on to american idol, just like Miss America and Miss USA. I believe it would create more excitement than the poor contestants that cannot sing, but want to be on T.V. You would find better contestants, some kids do not have money to travel to all the auditions, but have good talent.

Although it is true ppl should care less, but what this "conspiracy" does (if there is one.hopefully not) is prove or shows that America's vote doesnt count, and that is a big attraction to the show. to help keep their favorite singer advancing. ppl who vote are being manipulated. even though it is a reality show, it is not fair to treat one contestant better then the other. I simply wouldnt like that as from a human being standpoint. Reality tv-star or not, theyre still ppl. it makes you dislike the show a little more than before b/c that will be on the back or your mind ea time you watch it. it makes you feel the show isnt legit. One can feel "played" in this case. (yea yea,i know..its just a show..who cares.)

I agree that no one should take this show that seriously. But I disagree that, if it really is a sham, that the FCC should allow it without disclosure. I seem to remember that at some point someone did a "disclosure" on professional wrestling. My 10-year-old daughter loves this show. One thing I have found is that I can use it to teach her how NOT to behave to people.

I think that American Idol was actually REALity television in the first season when Kelly Clarkson won. That season's top 10 had the most talent I've seen compared to all the other seasons. (Plus, look at record sales-- clearly, Kelly Clarkson has the most talent) In the first season, they didn't even have an audience for the top 30 and there were no special effects or even background music-- just the piano and the singers. It was wonderful. Now that the show has gotten popular, it has become more about raking in the money rather than producing a star. I don't think it's rigged and I'll probably watch it until the show ends, but I think the first couple seasons were truly the best.

You people don't know the truth about what goes on with this show. My granddaughter a Beautiful young lady,(has won numerous beauty pageants) has a Beautiful voice, (has won numerous talent competitions) went to Greenville, NC to audition for Americian Idol. She spent two days there being herded around like cattle, while the film crew told them where to go, what to scream at the camera and where to stand, so they could do their promo shots for the up coming season show. On the second day they were told to be there at 6:00am and the crew didn't show up until 10:00am. Then they were given numbers to go into the Greensboro Coloiseum only so many at a time, where they had what looked like college students from the local colleges. They then were ask to go up to a table three at a time and sing what they could get out in so many seconds. There was no sign of Randy, Paula, or Simon. As far as we could see there was no one of talent there to judge. So you tell me how these people that get to the stage where they pass all the judging and then go on to national TV, How do they get passed on when they can't even bark up a tree? I would much rather see some talented people, even if they aren't at the top of their game yet participate. Let us be the judges! And I agree that the phone lines are rigged.

I doubt the show is rigged, but sure everything is orchestrated, rehearsed, scripted, whatever... all of the reality shows are. People are taking it too seriously, the only people who have a right to gripe are the other contestants--if the results were truly rigged.

According to the Media, "Idol" has auditions of Applicants in major cities in the U.S.This being the case, just shows how "PHONY" the program is by allowing no talent applicants on the program so that Simon can do his disgraceful act. I no longer watch this charade~

I am an avid viewer of Idol. Sure th voting may be rigged but it's that way in every voting whether it be Idol, political, etc. Where do Corey and Scott come off with their comments. Both are nothing more than 2 bit criminals who would do anything for a dishonest buck! Julia needs to grow up. She has sour grapes because it wasn't her who won. You win some and you lose some....just a fact of life!

Of course American Idol is rigged. If you don't like being manipulated then don't watch. It's as simple as that.

The office nerd who can't left up the water jug and place it in the dispenser.I think the show wants good likable nerds to keep up the hyp!!Im 99.9 sure.

Do you really think that everyone that auditions is going to see Simon, Paula and Randy? Because if you do or did, then you are pretty stupid. I am sure that your view however is a bit smudge just because your family member was rejected. If she would have been accepted and had to sing at 5 different tables to total strangers before, even if, she ever reached Simon, Paula, and Randy, you would be singing a different tune.

It not riged.yes it minupulated as they let people with no talent addition to spice up the program the people who are chosen have talent those that are not are passed up.
these people who were not chosen was because they had no talent and sounded like mules with sore throasts,
they are only accusing of it being rigged because of sour grapes and refusal to accept the fact they have no talent
as for your daughter thousands of people try to addition . it impossible to addition all so of course they have to eliminate to make it feasible for the show itself. so that means they are going to pass people with talent to addition and a few with no talent to spice the show and eliminate the rest.
it hard for parents to accept their kid no good at something. you only see the best. perhaps your child pass passed up because of lack of talent.

I tend to agree with the premise that the show is rigged. I'm in Knoxville, TN and at a party ran into a former Idol contestant who made it to Hollywood but got cut early. I remember seeing her on the show. She said Idol is definitely rigged, not just because she didn't make it beyond the first cut but because of things she saw. Reality TV is not all reality!
