(S02E14) I remember reading an article about a month ago (I forget where) about how CBS had chosen Criminal Minds as the follow-up to last night's Super Bowl. The reason I mention it, is that in the article Edward Allen Bernero (the show's EP) said something along the lines of how they weren't planning on making this episode any different from a normal installment.
Well, I have to disagree. This was episode was spectacular and easily exceeded any expectations I had going in. If this didn't "wow" you, then you haven't been watching Criminal Minds enough. Not only was the case one of the most gruesome things the BAU team has ever tackled, but it's only the third time the series has left us with a "To Be Continued" cliffhanger. All that sounds like a bit more than the average episode to me.
First off, great touch having Jim Nantz and Phil Simms open the episode. Sure it was pre-recorded and beyond generic, but it helped create the atmosphere that what we were seeing was happening at that very moment.
Secondly, kudos to James Van Der Beek as Tobias (aka Raphael). He's been off the radar recently it seems, but this was one hell of a way to make a return to television. He was downright creepy (and totally believable) as the Bible obsessed killer. I wonder if we'll find out what happened to his abusive father in Wednesday night's conclusion? I'm guessing Tobias probably killed his old man using his own teachings against him as justification.
Overall, just a really well done episode that definitely should have jolted you awake if you found yourself nodding off during the fourth quarter of the game. The cliffhanger was well done too. I certainly didn't see it coming because I had no idea this was a two-parter. Reid being abducted is an interesting twist though. He's the weakest one on the team physically, but mentally I think he'll be able to stand up to Tobias. It actually reminds me a lot of that Alias episode when Marshall was abducted after going on a mission with Sydney.
Other random thoughts:
-
Glad to see that Hotch and his wife are doing better. It's been a while since we saw her last.
-
Anyone else find it odd that Gideon gets a special tour of the Smithsonian every Super Bowl Sunday? That's kind of a weird tradition, even for Gideon.
-
When is Garcia finally going to make a move with Morgan? The writers really have to explore that.
The conclusion, "Revelations," airs on Wednesday night at 9:00PM.

Can anyone tell me what happened, if anything, after Reed starts running in the corn field in response to the gun shots? My local network (KDKA Pittsburgh, Pa) cut right to the news to tell us it was cold out and only going to get colder.
I mean it is February, and last time I checked it has been REALLY cold now for almost a week, but hey, I'm not a news director.
So I didin't get anything after that. I know Toomey says that Reed was taken in his great article here, but did they show anything else? Thanks!

While this wasn't a great episode it was much better than I expected it would be. You're right, James Van Der Beek showed some real acting talent for a change; although, the whole split personality thing was just too obvious from the beginning. I would say his performance was better than Kyle Chandler's appearance on Grey's Anatomy last year. If there was anyone out who wondered why Criminal Minds was stomping all over Lost, this episode should have cleared it up. It will be interesting to see what the ratings are.

Ha ha, Erica I'm about an hour south of Pittsburgh and the same thing happened to me. There are gun shots fired in the barn, Tobias picks up the gun and and points it at Reid, dramatic music starts and ... and ... and ... Hello and welcome, we're the KDKA news team. I don't know if it was a screw up but they couldn't have timed that worse if they tried.
First time I actually watched that show. Seemed pretty good but essentially it's CSI with psychology instead of forensics but still seems interesting.

I really liked the episode but there are a few things that bothered me about the whole thing. First I need to go back and check the Tivo because I swear there were two people walking around in the shadows when they killed the first couple. If Raphael is a split personality who was in the second hood? Could it be the "third" voice they said they found?
A couple of plot problems. First if Raphael made the call from the first victims home to test the police response time, why did he use his real name and address? And if he lived an hour outside of town (as the police Chief said) why didn't it raise suspicion that someone living so far away would be walking their dog there? It just seems odd that they wouldn't have been visiting a friend nearby or somehow have a reason to be in that neighborhood. Neither of these questions were addressed which is very odd for a show as well though out as Criminal Minds.

Fantastic episode. This show really outdid itself - I was on the edge of my seat during the last 15 minutes. I wonder if the dogs got to her before she was able to shoot them. I don't want anything bad to happen to Reed - he's one of my favorites.
Garcia staring at Morgan in the bar was a little stalker-ish for me. But it was nice to see her without a computer monitor in front of her.

Andy, you feel my pain. You would think KDKA would know better, being the first in broadcasting. But having moved down here from the snow belt up north, I have found that the local news goes a little bit crazy when "snow season" comes. I guess when you only have the Steelers and the weather to get all excited about, they just can't help themselves.

i have to say, i didn't think much of the episode (it was painfully obvious it was one suspect, yet they kept milking it...?) until the final few minutes... i'm was still kind of on the fence with this series but that teaser got me so excited for the next ep. it looks fantastic.

This is the best CM I have seen. Sucks that it started after the Super Bowl...I am left with questions and 4 night classes a week..so I get to miss the second half of the show. I would record it, but I don't know how to set up the VCR without a remote...the VCR itself doesn't have a "menu" button. Anyways, this episode reminds me of that move "Frailty" with Matthew McConaughey and Bill Paxton.

I was really disappointed with this episode considering all the hype it was getting. Psychologically speaking, the whole split personality thing is still so unclear to us that they could have made him have a million personalities and the lay person wouldn't know the difference. It was quite obvious from the beginning of the episode that this was gonna be a multiple personality serial and I would have expected them to follow science more closely as they have done in the past and not suggest that a person with DID would cycle between personalities so rapidly. I too am still sitting on the fence about this show. I'm a psychologist in training and I like the premise of the BAU and I know several people who work in close conjunction with real life analysts for the FBI and other big bureaus but I really think they over-dramatize the simplicity of profiling and understanding criminals.

I wasnt home last night and was not able to watch the broadcast. I went to watch it later in the night on TIVO and saw that I only got half of the show since the PostGame went into the Crimal Minds spot. Does anyone know where I can find this episode on-line?

Legally the only way to get the episode is the cbs.com innertube, if it works for you.
Illegally.... :)
I think it would be great if CBS took their currently open tuesday at 10pm slot and reran the episode.

After the gunshots, Reid goes running toward the barn. He gets punched by "Raphael" and he gets his gun. "Raphael" tells him that he couldn't stop the murders alone, while his "dads" personality tells him to shoot Reid and that goes back and forth a few times. Then, to be continued.
Also you can watch the episode via On Demand (if you have it), CBS's InnerTube may eventually get the episode, or via all the usual bittorrent sites. (EZTVefnet.org, bt-chat.com)

Mr C, CBS is already running a "special" second epidode of The Unit Tuesday at 10. However, at least according to TV Guide, CBS is rerunning "The Big Game" at 8 pm on Wednesday, right before the new episode. It seems a bit greusome for the "family hour" to me. It has nothing for that slot til Jericho returns, I guess.
I am not sure this is really happening becuase CBS' own webside schedule indicates that the Criminal Minds episode to run at 8pm Weds is TBA.

My problem? How many times did they talk about this guy as a "psychopath"??? The way they were talking about him - delusions, disorganized... that is "psychosis", not psychopathy. Psychopaths are actually typically very intelligent, organized, and keep it together well - they are just prone to criminal behavior.
