The OC: The Case of the Franks

Ben McKenzie as Ryan Atwood on 'The OC.'(S04E13) One down and four to go. It's starting to feel like the end too, isn't it? Everyone seems to be finding their place. Sort of.

First off... Frank. I don't think I like him as much as I did the first time around. The whole idea of Ryan's father suddenly being in the picture feels a little forced. It was really the one unresolved thing left in his life and for that reason I suppose it makes sense that he's here now. It's just awkward and I can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe because he's been around for about 8 seconds and he's in love with Julie? Or because it's Kevin Sorbo?

I suppose it doesn't matter because the one thing you have to remember is what the show is about.

It's all about Ryan and I think the show is moving back in that direction. Everyone else, while important, are just there to supplement Ryan's journey. He's going to end up with Taylor, but you have to wonder. If Mischa Barton hadn't wanted off the show, would he still be with Marissa? I'm thinking yes.

I know a lot of people have been bothered by Seth and Summer's lack of chemistry this season, but I really like how they developed their story in this episode. All the parallels to Sandy and Kirsten were very well done. Summer's job offer with this environmental agency is an interesting twist though. If she's going all over the country, then her and Seth will definitely be taking some time off. But c'mon, we know they're going to end up together by the end of series. So this really just seems like a pointless obstacle to create a little drama in the meantime.

The Jimmy Cooper flashbacks Kirsten was having were interesting, as she played out her life in her head. I wonder if he'll be back again? He was in the Chrismukkah episode in Ryan's dream if you recall. His return could be an interesting story if done right. He hasn't been back since Marissa died and with Julie in love with Frank... well I don't know. Maybe there isn't anything there for Jimmy.

Back to the whole Frank ordeal. The little war between Kaitlin and Taylor was funny. The limo switcheroo was great and had me thinking of something out of The Three Stooges where everyone runs around with hammers while circus music plays in the background. I'm going to miss Bullit though. He was one of the more colorful characters we've seen on this show. (Bang!)

As I said though, I'm not digging the Frank angle. Anyone else find it weird to think that Julie could be Ryan's stepmother? What would her name be now? Julie Cooper Nicol Atwood? Wait, am I forgetting a name? There should be a Roberts wedged somewhere in there too. Man... Julie gets around. Let's see who else she can marry in the final three episodes.
