1. How much air time should TV news give to Barbaro dying? Um, how about a quick mention during sports and that's it? In the grand scheme of things, it's really not that important. One of the Boston news anchors said that the horse was "a great athlete" twice within five minutes. The horse's death was not only talked about over and over and over and over again on the major networks and all the 24 hour news channels, ABC led their nightly newscast with it. What, nothing happening in Iraq on in Washington? And they say Katie is doing fluff.2. I'm curious: does Larry King really, truly want to interview people like William Hung and Tyra Banks? I mean, this guy has been in broadcasting for 50 years, he gets great ratings, he's an icon in the cable news biz, he's broken many political stories on his show, and he's now interviewing Idol rejects and talk show hosts about weight and devoting entire shows to psychics? The hell?
3. So now Donald Trump is appearing on WWE RAW? Classy.
4. You know, if it wasn't for drug and sex scandals, no one would even care about beauty pageants anymore.
5. And Isaiah Washington is back from rehab after only a week or so! Excellent! That must be some rehab center he went to. What did he go for again? Saying bad things about gay people? I didn't even know they had places for that, but I'm glad he's back on the Grey's Anatomy set. They must have an express lane at that rehab center. Welcome back, Isaiah.

i lean so far to the left that i may even be laying down at this point, but seriously, rehab for saying faggot?!?!
what in the name of the flying spaghetti monster is up with that? what exactly do they do there?
is it like an isolation tank with your mom's voice saying "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" played over and over?
is it called the "Leo Ford Clinic"?
i really want to know.

I couldn't agree with you more about the horse. It was a HORSE, OK? That this fits anywhere in a half-hour (20-min) network news broadcast is a sign of how bad things have gotten. That it's the lead, when we're in the middle of a war, is unforgivable.
On Larry King: do you think he really knows what's going on anymore? I don't think he treats a reality-TV reject any differently than he would a head of state--just another body across the table to lob questions at, until the show's over.
Yeah, the "don't say bad things about gay people" rehab center was a new concept for most people, I think. I think it was probably a "stay home and don't be seen in public" move on ABC's part. I don't welcome him back, though--reports are that his presence makes the "Gray's" set uncomfortable for many of his co-stars. Write him out before he taints the show any further. I've never watched a minute of "Gray's", and yet I know 3 things about it: it's got some "McDreamy" guy on it, it's got an out actor playing a straight role, and it's got another actor who's a vocal homophobe.

With the horse, its news of Barbaro, but also a story about the thoroughbred industry in general. Its a multi million dollar a year industry, just with the horses, not to mention the parimutual (betting) side of things. The horses have been bred for speed (muscle mass and light bones) so prevalently, and raced at such a young age (Barbaro was 2 years old), that they are bound to reach a critical mass where these caastrophic breakdowns are going to become much more prevelant. A big part of the Barbaro saga was the thoroughbred breeders trying to prove they cared enough about the horse to save it, and to deny that their industry isn't in nearly as bad a shape as it seems.

I'm still amused from a radio report a few weeks ago where they talked about Barbaro being operated on, and then concluded it by saying he was in "stable" condition.
Nearly choked up a furball on that one.

In the case of Barbaro two words: ANIMAL CRUELTY! Anytime an animal is pandered for entertainment, it is a form of cruelty.
Regarding King: Consummate professional.
About Isaiah Washington: SHUT UP!

My thoughts on the Barbaro story - yes, there is a war on, yes, there are terrorists, yes, there are terrible things happening all over the world. I agree that in the grand scheme of things, the horse story isn't as important. BUT, it really IS important, it is about the loss of a beautiful life, a life that people cared about. Being an animal lover, I was very saddened over his death and I am glad that it was on the news, and now we can go back to the horror of the war, the terrorists, disease, all those grim reminders that things just aren't going that well on this planet. I have a nephew on his second tour in Iraq. I really would rather see a news story about the death of a horse rather than see ONLY stories about Iraq. The Barbaro story is over, Iraq will be around for way too long.
