"The Runaway Perjury": Scooter Libby news! It's been a while, so Jon recapped the entire story, complete with images to illustrate. Alfred E. Neuman (Bush) and Darth Vader (Cheney) were funny but expected, whereas using Monty Python's Gumby guys was a sweet choice.Senior White House Correspondent John Oliver stopped by to elaborate. "Also, legalize pot! Ahh-hahaha!" made me laugh because, that's pretty much the way any guy under thirty tries to finish up a political conversation.
Resident Expert John Hodgman, not wearing his orange tie for once, stopped by to talk about California's decision to have an early primary election. I loved the "I hate Mondays" Garfield cartoon. I need to find a screengrab of that, so I can print it out and put it in my imaginary code monkey cubicle, next to my "Hang in there!" poster of Saddam Hussein. I also really liked: "Oh, Garfield... Always being assassinated at train stations."
The night's guest was Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Museum of Natural History's planetarium and author of Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries. This was a fantastic interview, I thought. If any one of my childhood Science teachers had been Mr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, I probably would have gone into a career in the field. He sounded so enthusiastic and happy to be sharing his knowledge, it was kind of contagious. As dorky as it sounds, I actually brushed up on my black hole reading right after the episode ended. I have also been planning on going to New York to wander around and shop again, but I think I'll spend all day at the Museum of Natural History instead. Like I said, if the guy had been one of my Science teachers, I'd probably be in university to study string theory or something.
Jon/Stephen: Stephen Colbert had some choice words for Jon's guest. Moment of Zen: Street Racers: Strippin' and Driftin'. I think I've seen that ad before. But I'm pretty sure it was at, like, three in the morning and I eventually convinced myself that it was just some horrible, horrible nightmare and not a preminition of the upcoming decline of civilization as we know it.
Normally, I don't pay much attention the clips shown during the credits, but the Gates thing that they showed was absolutely hilarious. You see how I've italicized it? That means I'm really serious. I think I laughed at it the most, out of everything from the entire episode.. I wonder why they chose to show it over the credits rather than at the top of the show, when Jon was talking about the quick exit. My favorite bits: "Oh, popcorn, you won't laugh at me..." and "Hand-claw activate! Successful!"
