File this one under Bad Ideas. Donny Osmond has agreed to host a new game show for ABC that is in very, very poor taste. It's called The Great American Dream Vote.Miraculously, Donny Osmond is not the problem here. The problem is the game: There are 8 contestants who tell a studio audience (and Donny) about their lifelong dream. Then, they make their case as to why their dream should be fulfilled. They "square off" and plead their case while the studio audience votes. Eventually, the audience will whittle the contestants down to just one who gets to have their dream come true. Sounds great. I'm sure there's nothing quite as exciting as watching someone realize they will not attain their lifelong dream.
Does anyone else think this sounds downright mean?

Yeah. It's just plain cruel to tell Donnie that he's finally back on television, only to have to cancel his show four weeks later.

He's not big enough. "Dancing With the Stars" maybe, but not his own show.

30 minutes or an hour long? Either way-it sounds boring and sad...

Not only does this sound sad, but it will obviously be "rigged." How? Because the "dreams" will be chosen in advance.
They already sent out a "casting call" some months ago for "Star Trek" fans whose "dream" has always been to have a Star Trek fantasy; in other words, they've already lined up what "dreams" they can practically fulfill and are setting out to cast according to what they can cheaply or easily produce.
If this is any evidence, I don't think the "lifelong dreams" they talk about will be anything along the lines of "cure my mother's cancer" or "provide a house for my homeless cousin."

Yeah this sounds terrible, why would the people at home care? We can't vote so there is no point. Sad, boring with a terrible host.

Sounds almost as mean as the first few weeks of American Idol. Gotta be a hit!

You're all probably too young to remember, but there was a daytime show in the mid-50s to mid-60s that had exactly this premise. Queen For a Day had these lower class women who'd tell their sob stories of their hard knock lives, and whichever one the audience decided was the most pitiful got some big prize package. Even as a barely sentient toddler I think I knew I was seeing something truly awful.

This show is not such a bad idea and I have thought of something similar, however in my version, EVERYONE's dream is realized and paid for by the Producers...

Who wouldn't want a 1 in 8 chance of seeing your dream come true? Those aren't bad odds...and anyone who goes on the show must know that there is a 7 in 8 chance that they won't get their dream....but, as we see in American Idol, sometimes when the show doesn't recognize the dream--someone else in America wants to make happen. I.E. The two castoffs from Seattle interviewing Super Bowl players for Jimmy Kimmel....I think we should wait and see. Donny Osmond is pretty nice guy and would not likely sign up for a cruel show. Americans like to see others get their dreams fulfilled--it gives hope to everyone...that's why Deal or No Deal is so popular...

I hadn't thought about the "mean" aspect of it til reading the comments, but I agree with Gene that it is obvious rigged, but also agree with Liley about the "Cast-off"s. IE, Katherine McPhee is getting a lot more attention than Taylor Hicks (who I still adore) and Chris Daughtry hit # 1, didn't he? Who cares how someone's dream comes true....as long as it does! DonnY is getting big again. And if this show is cancelled, he's doing "Name that Tune" on CBS, and has just signed for the BBC version of Pyramid. And I'm sure he'll have no trouble getting another gig on Broadway. He won praises for his portrayal of "Gaston" recently....and there was always that "little" prodcution of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat...which only ran for 6 years and played over 2000 performances.

Thanks, Gene, for pointing out an obvious comment that I'm sure only I didn't think of. I hate realizing things, it breaks my mellow, yo. (By the way, this isn't sarcasm, I really just now thought about the "rigging" thing).

I don't like this kind of game show. Letting a studio audience decide on a person's lifelong dream? Sorry, but that has to be done by the person himself, regardless if it's received, knocked down or otherwise. That's why there's been a lack of creativity in game shows and why some are copying Deal or No Deal too much. I think that this will be yanked after a few shows because the premise is so very confusing.

First, Donny hosting ANYTHING is a bad idea. He destroyed "Pyramid" with his folksy, loud, way too friendly/inappropriately familiar banter. As for the show, before I make a judgement, I want to know how the non-winners are eliminated.

I thought the show was great. I had been trying a very long time to get the attention of an NFL team, and FINALLY I had a chance to get a national audience and an opportunity to change my whole life. The show was cancelled, and now I may never know. This was the first platform in years where people could not be afraid to dream, no matter how big or how small. Sometimes we get so busy trying to survive life that we never get the chance to truly live it. I wish more folks would have supported the show and at least gave it a chance. Everyone has at least one thing that they may spend their whole life wondering if only something could have been different. This show could have helped answer that question.

I can't believe a bald man which is only thinking of himself would win over the Senior Basset Retreat which would benefit a lot of older Bassets that can't be placed, shame on you. I will not watch this stupid program and neither will any of my friends.

It's a sad day in America when you see a bald man's dreams of getting hair win a dream come true over someone coming out and hoping America will vote for a rescue for senior dogs. Yes, I am a dog lover and own 2 basset hounds of my own. They are both RESCUE bassets. These animals are older and not many folks want to rescue an older dog. Devon's dream was NOT for herself...but for these basset hounds to live out the rest of their lives in a place to call their own. Think about it ABC and America....What happened? I won't watch this show again. I don't support it's message since it's not the one I as an American and dog lover want to send out. Maybe there are folks out there that feel the same. I hope they voice their opinions as well. Karon Humphreys

Yeah, we missed the first one, and we tuned out the second episode in disgust after they listed all the fat bald guy's prizes. I mean seriously, I could see giving him transplants, but that AND a trip to Vegas for him and his friends, AND $25,000 cash, AND a new sports car ... give me a frigging break. Forget the show's weak overall concept -- this guy (and the people who voted for him) killed the show. Any other winner and it might have survived a litle longer.

My 'vote' is to cancel the Great American Dream (aka Selfish American Dream) Vote...it is an abomination! To compare the dreams of a self-centered bald man frustrated with his alleged lack of social life (oops, don't many men shave their heads now to be in fashion?), with the dreams of one who wants to help old, abandoned dogs is incomprehensible. To claim that the American public voted in favor of the selfish man who whined "the other contestants want something for others, I want something for MYSELF!" by a mere 30,000 votes is outlandish and unbelieveable. Shame on all who were involved in the production of this senseless, heartless and mindless program.
