I thought Jon Stewart did a fine job as Oscar host, but I can understand them wanting to go with a more "traditional" choice. And with Ellen, I think the mainstream people get someone who they can enjoy (her daytime talk show is a hit) and the people who want their humor a little more wiseass will get their way too (people forget Ellen can be quite clever).
In this interview with TV Guide, DeGeneres promises not to suck, and also says that she's not going to copy what people in the past have done. Meaning, she's not going to put on the dance shows and dance a la Billy Crystal. She does say that it's going to be a little more fun and casual than most years.
And her favorite Oscars host was Johnny Carson, so that's a good sign.

Is there a problem with getting hosts for this show?! I am sick of Ellen's bad dancing and cackling on television - She will probably wear a tuxedo...Let's try to do better next year with a respected ACTOR or Oprah!

I LOVE Ellen. This is one Oscars airing I might watch. I don't watch her show--since I work and all--but I really enjoy her humor.

I look forward to watching Ellen on the Oscars. I love her stand-up.
I don't watch her talk show, though. She's too much of a suck-up to the celebrities.

The problem with the oscars is not the host but how long and boring the show is. I dont understand why when someone win they don't seem happy. I'm guessing they have to be stoic to be considered a serious actor.

I wasn't aware Billy Crystal "danced" when he was the host--he made the very funny, spoof film clips, and was very funny, himself. The academy should offer him his weight in gold, because the show always sparkled when he was the host.

Okay, Ellen's "dancing" sucks. But she's funny, witty, and fun. I'm a big fan, except for the bad dancing. I'm sure she'll be great on the Oscars. Billy Crystal, however, does it better than anybody. Nobody else comes close.

I love Ellen. She is funny, and yet doesn't want to hurt anyone. Probably because everyone was so mean to her. This year, she is the ONLY reason I'm watching.

Wel, reading the posters above me, I feel safe in posting my opinion that: "Ellen is perfect" for the Oscars.
The only difference that would have made it funnier, might have been having Jack Nicholson co-host with her. But there are already too many "run-to-the-potty" commercials in it as it is without throwing Jack in there.

I would love to see Ellen do the Oscars. Although I find them boring maybe she can put some laughter into them. I have not seen many of the movies. BUT if she starts to talk about Politics I will click off immediately.

Okay...who cares if she DOES wear a tuxedo? She is funny, upbeat and will bring a spark to the otherwise boring Oscars. Many women wear suits and tuxedos, the trend starting with Dianne Keaton. Also, she may not be a "great" dancer, but she has never claimed to be, it is comedy. She does it to be funny and make people smile, not to win a dance contest.

I won't watch it, and it's not because of Ellen being the Host...its' just that Hollyweird SUCKS! All these freaks do is get up and pat each other on the back, and all they do for a living is read lines that someone else wrote. That isn't talent. Plus, none of them have any moral values, so why watch a bunch of Trashy people with phony made up faces filled with botox?

Ok, I love Oprah, but hosting an awards show is a comedian's job. A serious person would make an already dull format completely unbearable. Comedians at least break up the monotany. As for Ellen, great choice! At least she comes with a resume of hosting award shows. It will be anything but dull!
