I thought Jon Stewart did a fine job as Oscar host, but I can understand them wanting to go with a more "traditional" choice. And with Ellen, I think the mainstream people get someone who they can enjoy (her daytime talk show is a hit) and the people who want their humor a little more wiseass will get their way too (people forget Ellen can be quite clever).
In this interview with TV Guide, DeGeneres promises not to suck, and also says that she's not going to copy what people in the past have done. Meaning, she's not going to put on the dance shows and dance a la Billy Crystal. She does say that it's going to be a little more fun and casual than most years.
And her favorite Oscars host was Johnny Carson, so that's a good sign.

Is there a problem with getting hosts for this show?! I am sick of Ellen's bad dancing and cackling on television - She will probably wear a tuxedo...Let's try to do better next year with a respected ACTOR or Oprah!

I LOVE Ellen. This is one Oscars airing I might watch. I don't watch her show--since I work and all--but I really enjoy her humor.

I look forward to watching Ellen on the Oscars. I love her stand-up.
I don't watch her talk show, though. She's too much of a suck-up to the celebrities.

The problem with the oscars is not the host but how long and boring the show is. I dont understand why when someone win they don't seem happy. I'm guessing they have to be stoic to be considered a serious actor.

Okay, Ellen's "dancing" sucks. But she's funny, witty, and fun. I'm a big fan, except for the bad dancing. I'm sure she'll be great on the Oscars. Billy Crystal, however, does it better than anybody. Nobody else comes close.

I wasn't aware Billy Crystal "danced" when he was the host--he made the very funny, spoof film clips, and was very funny, himself. The academy should offer him his weight in gold, because the show always sparkled when he was the host.

I won't watch it, and it's not because of Ellen being the Host...its' just that Hollyweird SUCKS! All these freaks do is get up and pat each other on the back, and all they do for a living is read lines that someone else wrote. That isn't talent. Plus, none of them have any moral values, so why watch a bunch of Trashy people with phony made up faces filled with botox?

Ok, I love Oprah, but hosting an awards show is a comedian's job. A serious person would make an already dull format completely unbearable. Comedians at least break up the monotany. As for Ellen, great choice! At least she comes with a resume of hosting award shows. It will be anything but dull!

Ellen is safe and sweet. The Oscars ARE boring. I struggle to stay awake through most of it. Billy Crystal was ingenious with his parody's but even that was getting stale. Who cares who hosts....as long as they keep those idiot celebrities grounded and make enough jabs at them to keep us laughing and them realizing they're not Gods.

I LOVE Ellen! Her show put's a smile on my face with her humor and upbeat theme. No she doesnt dance well but she's smart enough to know that...that's part of why she does it, to be goofy. Some people on here have no sense of humor, and as far as sucking up to her guests? She a ball buster, just the opposite, and she show's respect...and no i'm not even close to a Lesbian, but i think she seems like a great person, her sitcom was hilarious, i do admit she kinda soured though by constantly having shows on her sexuality once she was "out". People just don't want to see it all the time.So glad she's doing the Oscar's, that's the only reason i'm watching it!

Who cares. Watch or don't watch. Hollywood is so overrated and the award shows are all about what people wear and how skinny the actresses are...I fall asleep by the time the actual show comes on. I hope Ellen gets paid well...she is at least interesting and real in a very fake world of movieland.

I think Ellen is a great choice to host the Oscars! If you remember back the year of 9/11 when she was scheduled to host the Emmys, they were postponed and rescheduled. It was at a time when we in America didn't know if we were ready for comedy yet, but Ellen did a great job. I'm sure she'll do the Oscars proud!

I don't see what the big fuss is. After the opening, all Ellen does is introduce others to present awards. I'm sure she'll have some witty comments in between and the boring speeches of award winners will continue. All I care about are best movie, best actor/actress and best supporting actor/actress. I change channels in the interim. Producers, writers and directors should just be handed the statue and be done with it.

Keep up the great work Ellen.
Billy Crystal..last time i saw him made me change the channel, and forgot he was on.
Looking forward to the oscars.

Good post Steve! My smart father always said " Don't buy their stuff..don't make them rich !" Idiot sheep marching in droves to theatres, concerts, etc.! Hollywood does suck. These actors would all be movers , waiters or worse, w/o that lucky break. And there's way too many actors out there today, no wonder 80% become the flavor of the month. It's ok to want entertainment yes, but be more selective.

I find it so hard to believe how people trash other people. Ellen is one person that just doesn't even think of doing so. She is kind hearted and giving. I have been to her show three times now and she makes me smile and laugh and even dance too! Which I can't dance either but hey you only live once. Live well, love life!Keep it up Ellen! With respect, Pam
