It's almost impossible to find any Tex Avery cartoons on television anymore, which is exactly why God created the DVD. Some people might argue that Man created the DVD, not God, but if that's true, then how did God know Adam and Eve ate the Forbidden Fruit unless he watched it on DVD? And don't tell me that's the most idiotic thing you've ever heard -- I hear enough of that from the Bible publishers who refuse to accept my revisions to the Book of Genesis.
At any rate, Tex Avery's Droopy is coming to DVD with a set that includes every theatrical short featuring the laconic pooch. The set won't be released until May 15, so there's not much information on the set just yet.
Droopy, who first appeared in 1943, has always held a special place in my heart. While the "rule" of most cartoon characters is that they be zany and extroverted, Droopy managed to get laughs by being utterly monotone and deadpan. Also, Avery made cartoons for grown-ups, not kids, so you always learned a little something extra watching those cartoons. It certainly shaped my views on sexuality: every time I see a cute girl I whack myself in the head with a mallet. Trust me, they go crazy for that.

The best animation directors - Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett, Frank Tashlin, and yes even Bob Hanna and Joe Barbera (in their days at MGM anyway) - made cartoons for grown-ups. Why? Because they made them for themselves and not for any imagined audience of children or adults. Since cartoons were shown before every feature they had to appeal to a broad audience that literally ran from 6 to 76.
