And let me predict what you're going to say in the comments section:
"Studio 60 isn't funny!"
"Studio 60 should be canceled!"
"Studio 60 sucks!"
Only that last one will probably be spelled SUX, in hip web/AOL lingo.
The Emmys are thinking about making a "dramedy" category, for shows that fall in between comedies and dramas. Shows like the above two I mentioned plus Grey's Anatomy, Boston Legal, and Ugly Betty.
I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, mainly because I've always hated the word "dramedy." But there's a bigger point to be made here about TV shows in general and awards shows in particular: maybe all TV shows aren't made to be categorized. Sure, we can say without a doubt that Seinfeld was a comedy, but there are so many shows on now that could go either way, and I think that speaks to the quality of TV that's being done now and the attitude the writers/creators have when it comes to creating TV shows.
One of the reasons I love shows like Studio 60 and Ugly Betty is that mix of comedy and drama. They're more like real life, with the ups and downs and humor and seriousness we all experience. But a dramedy category? Hmmmm...

I whole heartedly agree. Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty shouldn't be competing with comedies like The Office.
This would also give shows like The Gilmore Girls a better chance to get nominated.

ugh. 10 years too late. Buffy would have swept that category every year, except being remembered for not winning an emmy just adds to the cult status.

I've never understood why there was a need to separate out dramas and comedies. Do they think one is easier than the other? Is it because they draw very distinct fans? I'd prefer the awards distinction be as follows:
Best 30 Minute Show
Best Hourlong Show
Best 2-hour long Show
Dramas, Comedies, Dramedies, Comemas, whatever you want to call them.

Studio 60 would not be a dramedy. Neither would Buffy. I don't watch Grey's Anatomy much, so I'm not sure about that one, but I don't think so. Boston Legal, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, Psych, Monk: these are all dramedys. What defines a dramedy, is a show with a strong dramatic core, but with specific scenes and situations that are designed to produce Comedy. While some of Studio 60's lines can be funny, it doesn't really have scenes that are designed around a joke. Also all dramedies so far have been hour-long shows, although there is nothing technically about the dramedy format that would preclude it fitting in 30 minutes.
In short, yes, it makes a lot of sense to have a dramedy category.

really though, it's unfair to judge a show like Desperate Housewives, which is 44 minutes long, against The Office, which is 22 minutes long

Yes, a dramedy category should seperate the Lost from the Boston Legal from The Office.

I kind of like the idea. Of course Studio 60 is so bad it wouldn't get nominated in any of them.
I like the idea of best hour long show and best half an hour show. But DH shouldn't be in a list with Weeds, The Office.

Yeah, the 30 minute, 60 minute thing makes more sense. Screw putting it into a category of drama or comedy - good is good, regardless of genre.
Desperate Housewives shouldn't even be spoken of. And is Studio 60 still around? You'd figure by now Aaron Sorkin's sanctimony would have forced him to commit suicide by now. Guess not. Bummer.

Well Bob,.. you certainly were right. Looks like David is the first to spout the unfortunate, but expected Studio 60 bashing.
Personally I really enjoy the show, but we're not talking about the show right now, are we. While I am not a fan of the word "Dramedy" in the first place, I would have a hard time classifying Studio 60 as such. Let's face it, S60 is a drama first and a comedy,.. well, it's it ever really a comedy? I'd be more prone just to call it 'Good TV', but we all know what kind of war that would start.
Guess we'll just have to stick with Drama or Dramedy for the time being.

Yeah hopefully that does happen. Then real dramas like The Wire, Battlestar Galactica, The Shield, Deadwood and others more worthy will get a chance. And real comedies like The Office don't have to face crappy 'comedies' like Desperate Housewives.

I have to say it: how many actors do you think want to be listed as a 30 minute man and not a 60 minute man?
Beyond that does anyone really watch the award shows anymore, unless of course they have to for their jobs. I can not remember when an award whether it was an Oscar, an Emmy, a Tony, a SAG, and on and on ever influenced what I watched.

Why is it so popular to hate Studio 60? It's just as well written as West Wing, and it's NOT A COMEDY. IT"S A DRAMA. DRAAAAMMMMAAA!
Christ, I bet most of you who are all, "Studio 60 sucks donkey balls haven't seen morw than 10 minutes of it. I've watched every one from the start, and yes, at first it was a bit questionable but it has gotten progressively better and better each week.
So for all you who hate it because it's popular to do so... Suck it.
And as for Ugly Betty... how bout a real ugo and not someone cute chick they give glasses and braces to..

gwangi is right - the dramady category is because Gilmore Girls and its actors have never been honored the way it should have been.

The issue is : would there be enough, at least decent hence worthy, dramedys on the air every season to claim such award?
There's no point in mentionning departed series imo. But for every Ugly Betty and Studio 60 there'll be countless awful offerings of the same genre that will not actually be worthy of a nod even less an award.
Unless the dramedy genre truly expands in the next few years with good enough shows then maybe it will be worth creating such award category but as for now I'd rather stick with the imperfect system already in place and weep in my corner when some shows I don't like get the nod for Best Drama over the awesome Battlestar Galactica, The Shield, etc.

Rob,
I wasn't the review that have seemed to be fired from doing the Studio 60 reviews because he was biased towards the show.
The show is not as well writen as West Wing, but it is ok writen. Harriet and her storyline brings down the show. It's still full of preaching. It's not funny, and it's not a drama. It has one good storyline and that's the FCC.
And Curt I have watched every episode, there are a few good ones, but the majority are not. And a lot of people bash it have seen all the episodes like be because they can't belive this is all Sorkin has left in him.
And I'm very VERY happy Bob didn't review the last episode. The review was very well writen and unbiased. Something that Bob can not do.

David,
I have no idea what that first sentence is supposed to mean, but I'll take a guess: if you're implying that I was "fired" from doing the Studio 60 reviews, you're wrong. I made the decision to stop doing any reviews from now on, because I don't enjoy doing them.
And as for any writer being "biased" towards a show, if you consider liking a show as being biased, well yeah I'm biased towards Studio 60. And the Office and Deadwood and Entourage and Ugly Betty and Heroes too.

Mike, you read my mind. I think it should be divided between one-hour and 30-minute shows. It's too arbitrary to distinguish otherwise, and a half-hour show is distinctly different from an hour show, whether they be dramas or comedies. Basically it would be the pseudo-equivalent to best feature and best short film in the oscars. Sassone: straighten out these emmy folks and get them on board!

Please let Studio 60 be in and win the "Likely to be cancelled series, so we can get on with our lives" category.
Sorry if I offended the three people still watching.
But seriously, put on anything else. Someone reading the dictionary would be more interesting.
