(S03E10) Well folks, don't get used the this new semi-season-long mystery, as everything said recently by Rob Thomas and crew indicates this will be the last of them.
Here's my problem with the idea of no long mysteries. Sure, there are a lot of what I call "mini-mysteries" for Veronica to solve all season long, and we've seen our share of them on this show. But can we really tolerate and believe that she's going to have a new mystery every week? I guess if it worked for Scooby-Doo it'll work for Veronica, eh? But I guess what I feel will take me away from this show is their over-reliance on relationship drama as the glue that holds everything together. Yuck.
Anyway, I digress.
I think everyone knew or at least assumed that V's perfect murder paper would come into play with O'Dell's murder, and sure enough there it is. Already I'd say Time the TA from earlier in the season is suspect number one, even though the interaction between Keith and Prof. Landry was so intense -- best part of the episode.
So was it just me or was "Ed Argent" supposed to be a play on "Ted Nugent", the rocker/bow hunter? Pretty obvious to me, but maybe some of you missed that.
Something that I guess we're left to interpret on our own is some of the loose ends from the last mystery of the season, like the hair shaving during the rapes and how Mercer could pull off a call-in show and have a recording playing.
Random note: Hey, what people were saying about Weevil were true -- turns out Francis Capra was on some medication that made him a bit zitty and overweight earlier and the season, and he's looking more himself now.
I know I've seen the actor who's playing Mac's new love interest before. He looks kinda One Tree Hill-ish, but I can't quite place him. In any case, like the rest of you I hope this relationship doesn't go sour like Mac's last.
And as for Piz trying to woo Veronica a bit, I actually found myself saying "thank GOD" when V was at Logan's door later in the episode. I'm not liking the idea of Piz with Veronica, but then again I have to remember what Logan was like at the start of season one -- look where he is now. But, alas, Piz will have his chance again soon.
Quote of the episode:
Mac: "...The second amendment is my favorite."

Mac's new guy is Michael Mitchell. I spent half the episode searching the net to figure out who he is. I recognized him from Invasion, but he was also on Phil of the Future.

If this is the way the show is gonna go, with nothing but relationship drama and mini-mysteries (and those are getting worse), they've lost a loyal viewer.
These girls are in college and supposedly mature for their age, but the whole thing with Mac and her guy was straight out of a lame teen high school drama.

I didn't think there would be any mini-mysteries next season either, because I doubt there will be a next season. CW needs to make room for the 12th season of 7th heaven.

Mercer just recorded the calls as well as the songs, and therefore was able to pre-record his call-in show. It's not unusual to not be able to get through to make a request in a call-in show, because the lines are often busy, so nobody who called and didn't get through would suspect it was because he wasn't there.
I am not worried about the relationship drama. I think the show has usually had good character development, when it has taken the time to focus on characters. I am excited about getting more time for that, since I thought it was getting sort of hard to connect to some of the characters (especially Veronica) in early season 3, but these last two episodes have really started to turn that around.

I enjoyed the interaction between Keith and Professor Landry, but setting it up required a lapse of intelligence on Keith's part that was totally out of character. He was involved in a famous murder, then wrote a best-selling book about it, but he doesn't think a criminology professor in the same town would know who he is? Especially since Veronica is the guy's best student. I know Keith doesn't mind looking like a fool now and then, but it annoyed me to see it.
In regard to the cross-purposes conversation between Veronica and Piz... I can see how he might miss that she was talking about someone else, but she had to have realized that he was talking about his feelings for her. She could have let him know she was heading off to make up with Logan, if only to keep him from looking like a dummy, too.

I'm with you - so happy to see Veronica at Logan's door! And I hope Mac's new romance continues - they're a cute couple :)
And even if the long mysteries are gone... I'll still tune in...

Michael Mitchell was also in the "Standoff" pilot episode, he was the rich kid turned suicide bomber that held the people in the cafe hostage.
thank god VM is back, it seemed like it was gone for ages...i'm not too excited about the CW's decision to pull the show in march for the pussycat dolls or the new "contained" mystery of the week format when the show returns for the rest of its already reduced season...hope the ratings are good enough for renewal.

I thought Mac's drama with the her new love interest was very believable, considering how traumatic her first relationship was.
I hope they keep the long mysteries. Otherwise I think the show will end up being too formulaic for a lot of viewers.

I know I am probably alone in this, but I really wish the on/off relationship between V and Logan would stop in the OFF setting.
That said, I dont think I'd like to see her w/ Piz either. Can't she be single for awhile maybe...and then she can do what she wants on her cases and not have to worry about explaining herself to 'her man'?
A mystery a week doesn't sound as appealing to me as the mini-arch mysteries that last a few episodes.

my biggest problem with the minimysteries is they are getting easier and easier to solve. maybe it was just a lucky guess but i knew as soon as she met him that that dude had the monkey. myabe this one was just poorly written and they went with the least likely suspect because that is a "by the books" gag. i don't know though i felt cheated. if it had been his co-worker who was bitchy the whole time, it would have felt more like the veronica mars show i am used to. i guess everything last night was just all too obvious and does not bode well for the future of the show.

I have to say as soon as they said the monkeys are killed, I know one of the people in the lab had stolen him so he wouldn't die. Still V could have made a future source for another case with this one.
I think they should at least do 3 - 5 episode mysteries on the show. Stand alone episodes aren't going to cut it for 22 episodes. Having then in between a mystery or even thrown into the middle of one to stretch it out some is good. We use to get some semi-stand alone episodes that were usually light, funny, and featured more of the friends the first two seasons.
Last night it was so obvious how much Gilmore Girls has gone down hill when you watch a well written episode of Veronica Mars right afterward. If the CW is losing Gilmore Girls, they need to be smart and keep Veronica Mars one more season. CW needs to find another strong female driven show to go with VM's. It's rare we have good female role models like Veronica on tv.

I thought last night's episode was ok. I thought the last episode "Spit and Eggs" was much more intersting and reminded me more of season 1 of vm. Man do I miss that.
As far as piz, he's not right for veronica. But Logan sure as heck is not good for her. This on again off again stuff is ridiculous, i totally agree with you Tim. I would rather Duncan come back. My dad has a theory that weevil and veronica always have chemistry. My dad also works nightshifts and drinks 2 pots o coffee a day.
I miss the long mystery's. It gave you something to really ponder all season. Make the mini ones a little harder or at least stretch a couple of episodes. Last thing where is wallace?
And ps, i loved canada is closed people...border issues.

Hey, Jose-There are lots of mature people out there that act like total idiots when it comes to love and relationships. Just because they are in college now doesn't mean they're above the "lame teen high school drama." Hello, they're freshmen! They just got out of high school. I think the relationship drama is what grounds this show in reality; makes Veronica and her peers more human and more relatable. Isn't that the basis of a good show, that people can relate to the characters?
I say bring on the relationship drama, and keep 'em coming!

I dunno, we bought the Monster of the Week episodes on Buffy/Angel for how long? I think if going to a Mystery of the Week format is what keeps Veronica on the air, I'm willing to give it a shot. And I think the interviews I've read with the creator hit it -- none of the season-long mysteries will be as good as the ones the first and second season because unless you kill somone like Wallace or Mac off, there isn't a lot of emotional involvement for all of the characters. And I don't want Mac in any danger!

I agree with Ted. I was disappointed in Keith being so clueless or maybe oblivious is the right word.
I do not mind the mystery of the week as long as it is interesting. Unless they have filmed all of the episodes why not restructure the current arc to cover more episodes?

I don't mind relationship drama in the context of the larger mystery. But it should never become the purpose of the show, like it is in say The OC.
And this mini mystery was one of the worst. It just wasn't as clever as what I have come to expect.

I wish she would at least consider Piz. I've never seen any chemistry with Logan. I just want to slap her and tell her that when she's 30 she'll wish she had given the nice ones a chance.
