The New York Times is reporting that ABC and Disney execs are "mulling the future" of Isaiah Washington. He's in hot water with fans, critics, and his own co-stars for using the word "faggot" to describe gay co-star T.R. Knight. His use of that word may be in violation of Disney's corporate antidiscrimination policy (plus, there's an online petition to get him canned).Let me sum up: He got into a verbal and then physical argument with Patrick Dempsey on the set of Grey's last year, in which Washington used the f-word to refer to Knight. It all simmered down until Golden Globes night when Washington told a room full of reporters that it never happened and he repeated the f-word. Co-stars Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight went on different television shows blasting Washington. Since then, Washington has apologized, claimed he's "getting help", fired his publicist (why? because he's the bigot?), and hired a crisis management team. Yesterday, he met with gay activists.
Washington is reacting the same way Mel Gibson and Michael Richards reacted when they were busted for making racial slurs. Here's the difference: Isaiah Washington could never work in Hollywood again and very few people would care. Mel Gibson is a huge, worldwide star and even his reputation took a major beating. Michael Richards is Kramer (although, it's debatable whether he'll survive his own fiasco). Isaiah Washington? He's been on a trendy television show for 2.5 years. I say boot his ass and forget about him. He screwed up not once but twice. There are better people out there who are worth the fame and fortune that he's receiving.

I think firing him is too easy. I say they make his character gay. Give him a secret boyfriend and have them get caught making out. That would be justice!

Totally agree. S. Rhimes should be providing a non-hostile work environment for her entire cast. That she has allowed this guy to remain on set and interact with the man he so shamefully humiliated and outed is just disgraceful.
Where is her concern for TR Knight and the other cast members? Her sole concern seems to be to hold the cast together for, for what exactly? Creative purporses? If so, she is failing miserably. She can write his character out of the show without much upset. He's not a lead character - he is part of an ensemble. It is not as though the show will fall apart if he goes.
Her behavior has been disgraceful in this ugly business. I'm not watching until he's gone-if he goes. I'm sure that is meaningless to them but, for me, it's fine - there are other shows to watch and books to read.

@Courtney - I love how you're putting all the blame on S. Rhimes as if she's the person responsible. Has she come out and said she's not concerned about the cast? NO. You have no idea what's going on behind the scenes. You might want to actually form a logical thought before you succumb to those knee-jerk reactions. Do you seriously think that she has the authority to just up and fire him? It's a decision that the execs and the network have to make TOGETHER.

What kind of nonsense is this.
Come one, i don't think there's anyone in the world that didn't say something stupid when he or she is mad.
It happens, get over it.
This thing has been going on too long if you ask me, but i bet they like all the publicity.

There should be equal protest on the other side. When did this become a world where mistakes arent allowed. ABC is owned by a company that has created a princess of every nationality except African American, so where do they have room to point fingers at others. He apologized, where is the forgiveness? or is that exclusive to a certain group of people?

This man is gay. My God, is my gaydar that good? Can no one else see it? The closeted gays are the biggest homophobes. Really, does no one else see it?
Sure, his comments were wrong, but, he's dealing with stuff. He needs a good therapist, not a new publicist, and definitely not a wife/girlfriend.

For someone to lose their career over this is a bit much. Yes it was crass but are we to have different standards depending on how famous your are. It's not going to change overnight. To err is human... to forgive is human too.

I agree with making his charater gay. Make his charater do nothing else besides making out with guys the whole show. Then during the finale they can have him getting beat up by some people calling him a faggot. He of course dies from his injuries.
And if he was really good he could have said "I was asking for a faggot, I'm a smoker".

OK, as much as Washington's antics disgust me I don't want his character booted off the show; I like the character. The real problem, however, is the damage done behind the scenes: can the rest of the cast work with Washington now that he's made not one, but two references to a cast member in a very negative manner? I also keep coming back to what many have pointed out: if this had been T. R. Knight tossing n****r around the set he would have been fired quick. I still hope this can be worked out, but if not the show can survive without him; and it's not as if the diversity of the cast will be hurt with two African-Americans and a Latina left in the cast. Grey's continues to be one of the most diverse casts on television no matter what. In the end, this may come down to money. If advertisers and viewers react negatively (which I doubt would be long lasting, if at all) ABC won't have a problem bidding farewell.

It's a word folks, a WORD. An ugly word to most, a REALLY ugly word to some, but it's a WORD!!!
The whole issue to me a just a bit absurd. How do some people get their panties in such a knot about a WORD. I read that some big wig from GLAAD was going to fly across the country to talk to other big wigs about the mere utterance of this WORD. ABSURD.
I'm also astounded that folks are all over Washington because he used this WORD in a sentence: "I did not call Knight a faggot." I've read nothing about condemning him for playing fast and loose with the truth. (He apparently did use the word last year ). No, people are upset because the WORD came out of his mouth at all, regardless of context. ABSURD!!
BTW, please don't call me short, that is offensive. I'm vertically challenged.

In my opinion, the problem was with the first use of the word, as a slur. That was completely unacceptable, and that's what deserves a response from Gray's and the network. The second reference (at the Golden Globes) was Washington quoting himself. That denial (however believable or unbelievable it may be) is not the same as using the word as a slur a second time.
I do find it distracting to watch Dr. Burke and have cognitive interference from the ongoing coverage of Isaiah Washington.

It's not just a word, he also got into a fight over it because the rest of the cast aren't a bunch of homophobic assholes. He then used the word AGAIN saying that he didn't call his co-worker a faggot. He then took that back said he did and said he was sorry. He's an insane, homophobic, lying niger. Opps I called him a niger, but that's just a word too, so I'm sure he doesn't mind. *rolleyes:

That brings up a good point David. If it had been a white guy who called him or another cast member a racist slur, they'd already be off the show and condemned by Shonda Rhimes. But apparently being homophobic isn't bad enough to warrant the same reaction. It's "just a word" even though it insulted and humiliated a fellow member of the show. Then the guy who said it goes on to lie about ever saying it in the first place. Yeah, that's just great.
The lack of a reaction by Shonda Rhimes especially gets me angry. This is a show that has advertised a diverse cast, yet the only comment she makes on the situation is to turn it into a racial thing. (back when it first happened, she had talked about replacing a black actor with another black actor) We don't hear anything else from her.

DESTRUCTIVE, SADLY
8. For someone to lose their career over this is a bit much.
MORE THAN A BIT
10. OK, as much as Washington's antics disgust me I don't want his character booted off the show; I like the character.
TOTALLY AGREE
I also think Ms. Rimes & the cast should figure out if they really need to upset what has been a remarkable show starring great actors, people who, like Washington, apparently, can SOMETIMES be snarky divas. (Go figure!)
I don't think such offensive name-calling should be overlooked. BUT I think this drama has been way overblown. It's up to the show's creator & actors to decide whether or not they can "all just get along."
I SURE HOPE SO.....

Faggot is just a word, just as Nigger is just a word (both with two "g's" btw, I wonder if it's actually the double g's that are so offensive...hmmm). And to me and many others that's all they ever will be, words. Most chose not to use them in conversation because they are so loaded, but, in the end they are just words. Maybe when we can stop being offended by such words we can move on with making this country a more accepting place to live and raise our families. If we get derailed every time some rap guy talks about his Niggers or an actor uses the word Faggot we will never make any progress. I guess it's worth noting that I am neither gay nor black, so I can't ever truly feel the jabs some folks mean to throw with these words, I just can't imagine that they are so hurtful to cause all this commotion. Sticks and Stones maybe...but words? To this honkey male chauvinist pig, this all seems like a distraction that keeps us from dealing with the real problem...intolerance. And when I use that word I mean it in all senses, we are intolerant of anyone that disagrees with us, we've become so easily offended that all we ever do is complain about how we're offended.
And don't even get me started about why we even care what this guy says anyway...He's a FREAKING actor using WORDS.

The "f-word" is now faggot? WTF is wrong with you PC ninnies? There is only one f-word and it's the word f^ck. That's the only word worthy of getting just its initial with word attached. There is no other f-word and there's no f^cking such thing as the n-word either!
Christ, everybody needs to grow up. So he called a gay guy a faggot. Oh no! The world's coming to an end. a person called a homosexual a slang term for homosexual. Golly what a horrible, evil act. What ever.

Yeah, I really don't think they need to fire him. The damage has been done, and I think his character is integral to the chemistry of the show. He's an idiot, but I don't care enough to call for his head. It's ridiculous to me.

Yes, I believe that Washington should be fired. That's my two cents, FWIW.
