Over at EW.com, Michael Slezak has compiled a list (with photos and links) of the "Top 10" best performances from the first five seasons of American Idol. And he puts Fantasia's performance of "Summertime" at the top of the list. This is the type of list I could never put together because there have been way too many good (and bad) performances, and honestly, after awhile they all start to blend together for me. Plus, if I put together this list, I'd get nine million comments telling me I'm stupid for leaving Kellie Pickler off of it.
Of course, the beauty of Idol is that we don't all have to agree. There's a contestant with a sound and style for everyone. I understand that people form an emotional attachment to certain contestants throughout the weeks of nail-biting competition. What I don't understand is why reasonable viewers (meaning anyone over the age of 15) sometimes get so nasty (resorting to namecalling) when defending their favorites.
Slezak, for example, has included Constantine's performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" as #10 on his list. For whatever reason, Constantine annoyed me from day one. So, he'd never make my list. That's just my opinion, not meant to take away from anyone's love of all things Contantine. And please take note that I didn't say Constantine's singing sucked. He simply didn't appeal to me (something about his cocky attitude). That's my opinion. So, agree or disagree, but there's no need to call me names.
How about Slezak's choices? Do you agree he picked the very best performances? Or do you have your own list of favorites? What about the worst? To this day, the most "memorably-bad-performance" by a great contestant that sticks out in my mind is Clay's heinous rendition of "Grease." Ouch, I guess even the very best have a "bad day" now and again.

God did I hate that Summertime song. It dragged on and on and on, and then she sang it like 3 weeks in a row or something crazy. Almost as bad as when they told Katharine McPhee to do the exact same thing with Over the Rainbow.
I actually agree with many of the other choices - some Daughtry, Bo Bice's In A Dream, "Solitaire" from Clay Aiken...even going all the way back to Kelly Clarkson Stuff Like That There. But man, why the love for Fantasia so much? That was probably the weakest season so far.

I saw this list last week. I'd put Summertime in my top 10, but certainly not #1. My #1 performance was Bridge Over Troubled Waters by Clay Aiken. His best and yet to be topped yet.

Jennifer Hudson's 'Circle of Life' rendition would be tops for me, but Summertime is in the top 10. No so much for the song, but for how well she delivered such a complex piece.
Anything Tamyra Gray sang would fill up the list.

I rarely watch Idol, but I did manage to catch Bo Bice's acapella (sp?) performance...and I was blown away. It was truly awesome.

Carrie Underwood's rendition of "Alone" by Heart is one that quickly comes to mind. I think because it wasn't in her genre. She did a great job.

OMG! Fantasia, Blech! Every time I hear her screaching my ears just bleed. She is the worst Idol to date. I cannot stand her at all. I wished there was a way to vote someone off and not vote for your favorite. I would have been dialing her off every show.

I think Slezak did a good job, overall. The only performance that truly stands out that he overlooked was Tamyra Gray singing This House is Not a Home in Season 1. I wholeheartedly agree that "Summertime" deserves #1, but NOT the version the author links to! Fantasia sang this song twice on American Idol - it's her first version that sent chills up my spine and still does. The link in the article is to her 2nd rendition, where I think she oversang it. Look for the version on YouTube that's 1:52, posted by "misteran69" (Fantasia's in a black dress). THAT is the performance that truly deserves to be #1!

I never understood all of the hype about Fantasia... I thought she was awful... I can't stand her style of voice/singing.. it just doesn't sound good at all...it's just raspy and annoying. I'm glad to see she hasn't done so well on the charts..I remember every week voting for Diana Degarmo just so that Fantasia would disappear and never return until she learned how to sing and to wear a bra...

Yes, I agree. What is the big fuss over Fantasia. She is good but she is so cookie cutter. There are many singers of her caliber out there who already have record deals. I love Kelly Clarkson and Bo Bice. Unique voices!

I do agree with putting Fantasha and Jennifer Hudson on the list, but I also have to give Chris Daughtry (sp?) his props for Walk the Line!!! I never liked that song until he did it.

It's so "ill" the talk I hear now about how Jennifer Hudson has "suddenly" become great and why wasn't she that great on Idol! Uh, HELLO!!! Jennifer Hudson has been the best to grace Idol and next to maybe Fantasia's "Summertime" performance and Kelly Clarkston blessing season 1 with "Natural Woman" - there are three Jennifer Hudson performances that are top of my list. Jennifer's consistency has been unmatched with three superior performances in a row prior to her strategic departure (still say Idol is rigged). Jennifer sang "Circle of Life" like its never been sung. Then she followed up with "I Have Nothing" that caused Quentin Tarantino to gasp "Hudson takes on *Whitney* Houston and wins." And at the very top of my list is Jennifer singing "Weekend in New England" which is my favorite Idol performance ever EVER (oddly this is the week she got voted off) - which has caused me not to buy the scam of American Idol as a true talent competition. Great television and entertainment - but not a talent show. When a singing talent competition can see now Golden Globe winner, Oscar nominee (soon Oscar winner) Jennifer Hudson voted off 7th place when John Stevens, Jasmine Trias and Diana Degarmo remained...well, what more do I need to say.

Most of my selections (maybe all?) are from the last two seasons. I wasn't as avid a watcher prior to season 4. And I'm sure you'll notice who my favorite was by his # of performances on my list :)

9. If You Really Love Me - Elliott Yamin
8. You Are So Beautiful - Taylor Hicks
7. Walk the Line - Chris Daughtry
6. Over the Rainbow - Katharine McPhee
5. Making Love Out of Nothing at All - Carrie Underwood
4. Somebody to Love - Elliott Yamin
3. Trouble - Elliott Yamin
2. A Song for You - Elliott Yamin
1. Alone - Carrie Underwood

Fantasia is not a favored Idol for me but her first rendition of Summertime was one of the BEST I have ever heard! Again not a Constantine fan but his My Funny Valentine was awesome.
I love Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks everything they did was from the heart.

In the history of "Idol," Fantasia MIGHT be the most overrated singer ever. My entire family watched her season & felt she sounded like a car that couldn't turn over. Talk about a one-trick pony. She sang that "Summertime" song every chance she got. I also hated that stupid "Bo-bo" dance? She had way too much attitude for my taste and, in my opinion, not enough talent to back it up. It's a close call between her & Ruben for worst champions but I'll give her the edge. No way do any of her performances make my top ten.

I agree with most of the songs on the list, but I believe that Carrie Underwood's version of "Alone" was clearly one of the Top songs!

Fantasia's 1st performance of "Summertime" was truly amazing. However , I have to agree that Jennifer Hudson's performance of "Circle of Life" knocked me off the bed. Her performance was great!!!!! I do believe Daughtry was kicked off too soon. He was definitely supposed to be last years idol and I am not saying it because he is from a nearby town. He absolutely rocks!!! It will be interesting to see what this year will bring. So far the talent is just not there.

I HAVE WATCHED THE LAST 3 SEASONS OF AMERICAN IDOL. WITHOUT QUESTION CARRIE UNDERWOOD PERFORMING ALONE BY HEART HAS BEEN THE BEST PERFORMANCE. SHE TOTALLY BLEW ME AWAY WITH IT. THE SECOND SHE FINISHED THE SONG I TOLD MY WIFE THAT WAS THE BEST I HAD HEARD AND SHE WOULD WIN GOING AWAY.

Looks like 20-30 million missed the first season of American Idol as it picked up steam every year after that did, because of word of mouth. It's too bad, because they missed one of the most fantastic performances ever, that is Kelly Clarkson's "Stuff Like That There".
