American Idol appears to be the "show-that-can't-be-stopped." At last week's Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, executives referred to it as the "Death Star" because it consistently destroys the competiton. And few expected that Amercan Idol, now in its six season, would not only maintain its monstrous ratings -- but continue to grow. It's no wonder then that Fox executives are planning on scheduling at least 45 hours of Idol -- and possibly more -- to take full advantage of their ratings powerhouse.
Idol will be used as a powerful lead-in to launch new shows, such as, David E. Kelley's The Wedding Bells, and will hopefully revive barely-breathing shows, such as the Brad Garrett sitcom, 'Til Death.
Competitors have accused the Fox network of "over-milking their cash cow" by adding more hours of Idol to its already-saturated Idol schedule each year. Of course, this criticism comes from networks that think America needs to view Deal or No Deal or CSI Whatever several thousand times a week. Considering the fact that Fox typically remains in last place among broadcast networks when Idol isn't on the schedule, you can't really blame them for pushing their "cash cow" for all it's worth, when it is.
Only, I have to ask "How much Idol is too much Idol?" Right now, I'm already dreading the prospect of watching Idol three times in one week, as scheduled in upcoming weeks. And I find their 90-minute episodes to be a bit "too much" already, filled with fluff and commercials (which I'm going to skip on my DVR anyway). And if you really think about it, couldn't we cut the result shows completely, skip the Seacrest-rejection-theatrics, and just find the results posted online somewhere?
Yeah, maybe that wouldn't be any fun. Still, at which point, if any, will you get sick of viewing American Idol?

There's one thing I have to give them credit for, and that's only airing Idol once a year. CBS and the other networks air two "legs" of their reality shows per TV season.
But I agree that it's too much idol. I thought last week's audition episodes not sucked, but were too long. I'm looking forward to the weeks when there's an hour long performance show followed by a half-hour results show. That's all the AI I need.

Except that if Fox could, they'd run it pretty much all year round. As Bill Carter points put in his excellent book Desperate Networks, it's Simon Cowell and the production company that licence the show to Fox that limit them to running it once a season. That's the only reason there aren't two bursts.
In any case, Simon Cowell is busy in the UK running "X Factor" during the Autumn (Fall), and he can't be in two places at once (unlike two of the judges on Dancing With The Stars/Strictly Come Dancing who *do* manage that feat, garnering lots of air miles in the process).

I agree that more than this would be too much. How many people would watch that many nights of television broadcasting the same thing?
There would be the core fans that probably would tune in, but I think a lot would probably watch even less when they can turn on the TV on almost any night and see the show.
Even the wait for it to return builds suspense and eagerness to watch, so I think it should stay just like it is.

I happen to love the show. It is one of the shows I enjoy left on tv. My family and I watch it everytime it is on. I will never get sick of it. However, I will tell you that I can't stand most reality shows. I feel the judges are great and that is due mostly because of simone. If he is mean the people going on the show at this point must know what to expect. He should tell it like it is.

i think that AI is great. but anything over 2 hours would too much. where they are at now seems to be the right place to be. and during the off- season the anticipation of idol comming on in january is always the highlight of my year. keep the ammount of hours where they are, lets not overkill.

American Idol is already cutting into my TV time I have reserved for other shows. As long as they don't start playing it on Mondays, because I HAVE TO watch Heroes.
By the way, what's up with the Jeff Denton guy who keeps posting about Linda What's-Her-Face. I read the blog once last week. Instead of instantly addictive, I found it trite and was trying too hard to be funny. Liz does it way better. I'll stick with her. :)

I would probably stop or cut way back on my idol viewing and I'm sure most viewers would agree that when Simon goes.....Idol will go straight down hill.
Until then...bring on as much idol as you want.

I absolutely love American Idol. I sit down with my family and watch it every time it comes on and I laugh until my stomach is sore. If it comes on 5 times a week or more I will be right there watching it. It is a clean show and and you can't say that of a lot of the shows we watch on tv today. People should know by now what they are getting into when they go on the show and have to listen to Simon. Simon is just being Simon!

I am already sick of so much American Idol. I hope they put it on 5 nights a week like they did Millionaire and it kills itself. Go ahead, Fox, add a few more nights. The first few months of watching this show is nothing but a waste of time with nothing gained by watching tons of idiots who KNOW they can't sing act so bad in their audition, they get to be on tv. After the first 5 it ceases to be entertaining. As of last year I refuse to watch all the focus on that. I've missed nothing. I saw the last five weeks and know who won.

Eh, I am a lemming so I will most likely watch however many hours of Idol Fox chooses to air. I can't help it. The show is damn addicting. The trick is to record the episodes so you can skip over commercials and whenever Paula talks. I don't really need to hear about how every contestant is a "shining star" over and over again.

I "Love" American Idol, the judges are awesome (funny). I have all the respect for Simon, there's absolutely no reason why the judges should lie and be hipocritical to the contestants. As said by somebody else above, they should know what to expect when they go for try outs. Would deffinately watch more often if shown. Best show on TV.
