Ah, the good old days. When everyone could smoke and not get sick. You could sit on your dinosaur all day, breaking rocks, and then come home and sit around the yard smoking cigarettes with your best pal.
After the jump is a 1961 commercial for Winston cigarettes, starring Fred, Barney, Wilma, and Betty. Fred and Barney are just hanging out while the girls do all the yardwork and housework and decide to take a relaxing cigarette break. Not only are Wilma and Betty doing all the work, they also have no lines in the commercial.
Early cigarette ads interest me. Over at Adjab recently I posted a couple of ads that the Dick Van Dyke Show cast did in the 60s, on the set and as the characters of the show. This one is jarring because it's a cartoon (though an adult cartoon). This is probably what killed off the dinosaurs.
I also think it's weird that the cigarettes are bigger than Barney's head.

Cartoons from the 1940's to the 1990's interest me,
and some anti-smoking ads for Star Wars' R2-D2 & C-3PO
("R2-D2, you've found a cigarette!" (Beeps! "Well, I
don't think smoking is grown up at all."), and Popeye's
short safety tips shown during The All-New Popeye Show
really sent a clear message to children, including me.
There are other posters being printed just because they
shouldn't be, of the classic Sesame Street characters
being portraited as smokers, and touting guns. This
make me so angry, I want to write a letter to whoever
is printing them to stop it. That's not entertainment,
and those kind of T-Shirts & Posters should be banned,
just like smoking is being banned from resturaunts.
RICK.

The only thing that ever bothered me was the anachronism. Surely the writers could have tried a dinosaur- or stone-related version of cigarettes!

Does it really matter. Back in the day, The Flintstones were like our Simpsons. The Flintstones were the first husband and wife to sleep in the same bed. That almost didn't happen. They broke some new grounds back then especially for a family comedy. In the 60's more adults watched the Flintstones, it was concidered a adult comedy. Let's face it, look a today's tv, you have profanity to no end, nude people running around on primetime. Blood and guts scattered about. BUT NO FAMILY FRIENDLY TV SHOWS.
Why doesn't anyone complain about that? I totally turned off my tv. I'm tired of the sex, nudity, violance. If I want that stuff for my kids to watch I would rent them a porn. It is not any different.
Why doesn't everyone e-mail or write their tv stations, or carriers and let them know how you feel. I think you wouldn't have seen so many backsides and boobs on tv.

You made that choice -- and now you wish to whine about it. In today's world, we're all running out of choices because of special interest groups, feel-good useless laws placed on us, and people who don't have anything else productive to do but force their own beliefs on others. I remember when this country was free. If 2nd hand smoke is SO harmful, how did we all survive long enough to contribute to this thread?? It's a choice, just like religon, drinking alcohol (which does more damage than any smoke will ever do) eating too many donuts, or bungee jumping --
Prohibition does NOT work...

It seems rather ironic that our parents grew up watching these things on tv and they turned out ok, but nowadays kids can't even ride a bike without a helmet. Where have the good old days gone?

I'm 17 and my dad recently died of head and neck cancer due to smoking. He grew up watching things like this... commercials and advertising that make smoking seem ok. (hey, if your favorite cartoon character can smoke, it must be great!)He started smoking when he was 9, and continued until he was no longer physically able to. well I just have to say that after watching my dad lose a lung, his ability to eat through anything but a feeding tube, his tongue, and eventually his life, I don't see how anyone can say that these commercials didn't affect anyone. Even if it only caused a handful of people to start smoking, it ends up affecting many, many more.

I am so tired of hearing about the dangers of second hand smoke. It's junk science like global warming. Where is the proof? You will never find a Death Certificate that says "Cause of Death Second Hand Smoke".

I have to agree with the fella in post 11. too much moral laws. If the lobbiests, special interest groups, and politicians spent as much time on things that actually matter, IE... health care, economy, going after actual bad guys, this country could be a nice place. I'm a smoker, had many family members that smoked, many friends that smoked, and seen many ads on somking. none of the above had any influnce on my decision to smoke. I started to smoke the first time when i was 21 in the navy. I had a friend who smoked and wanted to quit. I tried to help him quit and when he didn't I tried one last resort, I threatend to start smokeing if he didn't. Needless to say him and I smoked many cigarettes together while sailing the Atlantic.

How many non-smokers really want to start, and how many smokers would really like to quit? How many of those who want smokers' rights are non-smokers? Anybody got a survey?

second hand smoke is a joke. if you dont want to smoke, fine, but find something else to complain about than trying to take away someone else's right to smoking. Try whining about gun control, global warming, gay rights, or whatever else helps liberals pass the time
