The sixth season story line on 24 involving Islamic terrorists suicide-bombing soft targets across America and detonating at least one suitcase nuke (not to mention scenes of Muslims being rounded up in federal lock-up facilities) is raising red flags with some Muslim groups, according to the Boston Herald.
Rabiah Ahmed, a spokeswoman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), urged 24 writers to be careful with their portrayal of Muslims on the program. She told the Herald that while her organization has a good relationship with 24's producers, "we do have concerns with the show . . . We are monitoring it and will be contacting our contacts at Fox to discuss those concerns."
I know that having a plot featuring Islamic terrorists does raise concerns about perpetuating negative stereotypes, but 24 has had quite a number of different nationalities serve as the villainous antagonists in previous years.
Last season, of course, it was weaselly President Logan who was working with Russian separatists for his own, warped reasons. In season two, an American cabal of oil barons, along with President Palmer I's ex-wife, were plotting to start a war in the Middle East. In the very first season, it was the Serb Drazen family that was looking to exact revenge against Jack Bauer and President Palmer I. One year, 24 had star Kiefer Sutherland read a disclaimer during a commercial break to explain that the American Muslim community stands with the nation in denouncing terrorism.
This week, the Fox network issued a press release that's posted on the CAIR web site saying that they work hard to spread the evil around on 24 to various ethnic groups and that "no ethnic group has been singled out for persecution or blame."

I would tell them to shut their god damn mouthes and worry about better things... ohhh like real life!
A poll was done a year ago and had 45% of the people said that Muslim Americans should have less rights than other Americanns. How about they go worry about that instead of a TV show!
And do you think Fox is going to listen? Their whole network is based on getting people pissed off and pushing the line.

I agree that they do spread the evil around. They have to make it plausible to today's current geo political situation. If this show were aired in 20 to 30 years ago, it would be the communists that would be the villains.
In previous seasons, they led the viewers to believe that there may be middle eastern terrorists behind the main plot of attacks, which then turned out to be someone else altogether.
Even this season, while the terrorists obviously being Fanatical Muslims, some of the innocent are being profiled and those doing the profiling are looking bad. Take the bruiser who was beating up that kid. Sure the kid turned out being a terrorist, but the guy was right for the wrong reason and came off looking like a racist.
I think the writers are handling the story very carefully and not making things as black and white as some think they are.

Good question! How dare they portray Assad as a Muslim willing to make peace with the West. What an insult to Islam.

Maybe they could have tried the sectarian angle like that Japanese guy who ordered Sarin gaz to be released in the subway in Tokyo a few years back.
Or the Mc Veigh type of people with a side of The West Wing shooters in the s1 finale...what? With an afro-american president one would would think there are some morons out there who'd want to take him out just for that.
All in all the middle eastern threat is tired and overdone by this show imo.

Come on ...24 is not believable as is. It will jump the shark if they start excluding Muslim from being terrorists. This PC crap is getting out of control. Deal with it ...most terrorists these days are Muslims.

Let me see, back in the 80's/early 90's the bad guy was always a russian. Why was that? Oh yeah, we were in the middle of the cold war. Now all the bad guys seem to be muslim, why is that? Oh yeah, because they are the ones we are at war with now. I realize not all muslims are bad, neither were all russians. IT'S A TV SHOW - GET OVER IT!!!!
Im' so freaking tired of all the over sensative critics. Maybe some people need to be offended. I really don't think '24' is the reason americans have ill feelings towards muslims, it could be the fact that 19 of them ran 2 planes into our twin towers and 1 into the pentagon and 1 more into a field in PA.
1992-Islamic terrorists with suspected links to al-Qaida and Saddam Hussein bombed the World Trade Center.
In 1995 and 1996, various branches of the Religion of Peace -- al-Qaida, Hezbollah and the Iranian "Party of God" -- car bomb attacks on American servicemen in Saudi Arabia, killing 24 members of our military in all.
The bombing of either Khobar Towers (1996) or the USS Cole killing 17 sailors(2000).
Just to name a few reasons that the terrorist on '24' seem to be muslims.
If the show was about the KKK I'm pretty sure the bad guys would be a bunch of white guys.
I could go on and on, but whats the point. These people (c.a.i.r.)want to be offended, if not, they would be irrelavant.
Keep in mind it's a TV show. En-Ter-Tain-Ment!

In re your poll numbers, the reason CAIR cares (heh) about shows like 24 is that they influence the thought process of the 45% of people who think muslims should have less rights. They are worried about a show creating a situation in which people believe its a good thing to round up a group of people (mostly innocent, some guilty) based solely on their race and religion.
As a muslim i rarely have problems with the way 24 has dealt with Islam and i actually like the first 4 episodes this season. Some are terrorists, some aren't but i like how the head of the islamic organization wants to stay in jail to help America while the innocent kid who's father was taken to jail was actually a terrorist getting a nuclear trigger. Muslims are going to be terrorists on TV as long as there are terrorists on TV so atleast make it interesting and thought provoking (kind of how Sleeper Cell does it but without being boring and sucking most of the time).
I love 24.

When people calling themselves Muslims stop killing innocent people, these dopes can start bellyaching. But perhaps they should take issue with the terrorists first...

I'll be honest, I was hoping for some China stuff this year. I guess that isn't terrorism though and what would CTU be without that.

Personally, I stopped watching years ago because the basic premise 24 is based on is insane. One of the biggest problems with America at the moment is the notion that anything goes when it comes to dealing with "terrorism" (I put it in quotes because the Bush administration has departed so far from the original definition of the term that it has become meaningless).
The minute a so-called democracy starts saying it's OK to ignore the law to fight evil, it is doomed. When audiences cheer Jack Bauer as he tortures and murders people and ignores the law when it's inconvenient, they become a little less American and a little more like the dictators of the late Soviet Union.

It's true that there needs to be more non-terrorist muslims in it to show a balance. OK we have Assad helping Jack, but let's face it - he's a terrorist too. It just so happens that he's changed his ways. Would anyone have felt good about Osama if he'd helped catch Saddam? Hell no.
At least there's one show putting a normal face on muslims - "Little Mosque on the Prairie".

Ditto Zakk. A lot of people need to wake up. Political correctness was cool in the 80's/90's, but we're in a new era. That sh!t doesn't work anymore.

It seems more relative to what is actually happening considering I don't see many of those wacky fun-loving Inuit looking to nuke Los Angeles...
For right now, radical Islamists seem to fit the plot to make for better entertainment. The writers have spread the bad-guy butter on some white bread too, so I don't see them just singling out the Middle East or Islam.
