What About Brian: What About the Exes

What About Brian

(S02E11) Yes! Yes! Yes! This is the episode we've all been waiting for. We're at the midpoint of the season and everything that happened at the very beginning is finally coming full circle. Fans of the show - you know what I'm talking about. So bear with me as we go through everything else. You have to admit, the way this episode culminated, it was well done. It didn't feel canned... OK, I'm stopping. Plenty of other plot points to discuss before we get to the good stuff.

The good stuff being Marjorie's return.

First off (because I want to get this out of the way), let's talk about Deena's cupcake business. I hate it. I think it's foolish, pointless, and the entire cupcake photo shoot was ridiculous. It's filler. Just like her fling with TK. Since separating with Dave, Deena hasn't had much to do. Fortunately (although for a heartbreaking reason), it seems Deena's character will now have a chance to grow and develop further than "novelty pastry chef."

Carrie, Dave and Deena's youngest daughter, is deaf. She can barely hear anything. It's sad. It's terrible. But it's smart in terms of developing Deena and Dave. You have to admit that it was getting stale between them. Dave goes on a date! Deena goes on a date! They ignore each other! Yay!

What's happening to Carrie is terrible, but it's something and I think it's a move in the right direction for bring Dave and Deena closer again. Anyone else pick up on the pediatrician list when the ear doctor first gave it to them? For those with unhealthy capacities for TV knowledge (like myself), you would have remembered that Marjorie is a pediatrician and would inevitably be on that list. Kind of spoiled the surprise for myself by remembering that... OK, moving on.

The seed of distrust has finally been planted between Adam and Heather. She has a past beyond just stripping and isn't saying much to Adam. The guy's name is Schmitty and he stole Adam's TV - that's enough to make any guy suspicious. Of course, the same seed is growing between Brian and Briget too. They had "the ex talk" and Brian never mentioned Marjorie to Briget. Bad idea. Does all this seem a little convenient that it's coming up now? Of course it does, but it didn't feel corny or planned. I can accept that.

Other random points:

  • Nic's story was dead in the water. So she's having trouble adjusting to motherhood. Boo hoo. It felt clichéd in a show that should be full of them but generally avoids them. Not here I guess.
  • Does Ivy serve any purpose in this show? It's too bad because Amanda Foreman is a great actress and there's really no use for her. She owns the bar they rarely go to... bad combination for a supporting actress.

And finally... the ending. Deena meets with Marjorie at a restaurant to discuss Carrie and what Marjorie has been up to. Fair enough. It's always easy to go with a doctor you know. Then, on cue, Brian and Adam show up with Briget and Heather in tow. It couldn't have been a more perfect moment. The looks of amazement/disgust/sadness/confusion on both Brian's and Adam's faces were flawless. Things were going good, they dipped just a wee bit, and WHAM! Marjorie is back.

So what's the deal at this point? Is it selfish of her to try and assimilate herself back in to everyone's lives? I say yes. She left, no word. She came back, no word. The sh*t hit the fan a while ago. But now that she's back, they can flick the fan back on. And turn it in her direction.

That's the worst metaphor I've ever made.
