Brothers and Sisters: Sexual Politics

Calista Flockhart(S01E12) Fun episode. I was instant messaging with my friend Susan while we were both watching it, and she kept typing, "Rob Lowe is totally HOTTT!" This may tell you something about our ages.

Then at the end of the episode, she began typing frantically, "Where's the NOOKIE!" Because we were both misled by Kitty's saying in the previews, "Let's just pretend this night never happened," to believe that there was nookie. But I am sure there will be nookie soon. After all, why hire Rob Lowe otherwise?

Kevin finally got laid! Woo hoo! And he said it was, "like having sex with a Greek God." Of course, Chad totally blew him off as soon as the girlfriend got to town. But a pug named Lola? Are you kidding me? He isn't bi. He isn't straight! He is gay, with a beard, as Kitty put it. I bet we haven't seen the last of him either. But at least he isn't Senator McAllister's cute gay brother!

How long did it take you to figure out that Nora's date Lawrence was gay? For me, it was when he admired her earrings. For Susan, it was the ascot. But hey, why not? What could be more fun than having someone to go and hang out with who is gay so you don't have to worry about the fact that he is too old for you and you aren't attracted to him. Or maybe I am projecting for Nora. But really, she can do better. Bring back Treat Williams!

Well, we are finally getting somewhere with Sarah's relationship with Joe. Do you think he is going to have an affair with Vanessa? Do you think he already is? Or is Sarah just overreacting? Sure, it's lonely being a stay-at-home parent, Joe. START A BLOG. What do you think the rest of us do? We don't huddle on the couch playing the guitar with other attractive parents. Did Joe forget what it is that people do that makes them a mom? So, it looks like this story arc will either be the slow, painful demise of their marriage, or the slow painful attempt to save it. Ugh. I think one of the reasons why it is painful for me to watch this storyline is that I have gone through my own divorce. That was painful enough.

What do I say about Tom except that was a stupid storyline, but apparently this show has to have at least one every evening. And at least they are acknowledging the pregnancy. She must be in the second semester now, so the point of all this sex is to show the passing of time. Fair enough.

But let's get to the heart of the show, yea, the very heart of this series: Kitty. I never saw Ally McBeal, but I have to say that I really like Calista Flockhart. She is intelligent enough to play a believably intelligent character, and that is a always a bonus. Her scenes with Sally Field are just a sheer pleasure to watch. "What's wrong with my hair?" "A little product wouldn't hurt!"They play off each other so nicely and have such a nice mother/daughter dynamic. Flockhart does a mutual dance with Field, unlike Abby on ER who just seemed to be in a boxing ring the whole time. Kitty is the child with whom Nora has the most problems, but Flockhart is also the actor with whom Field connects the most on the show. Even with ensemble casts, there has to be a core: With Thirtysomething (which starred Holly's Patricia Wettig and producer Ken Olin), it was Micheal and Hope. On Brothers and Sisters, it's Nora and Kitty. So, while the romantic storyline between Kitty and the senator is interesting and well-played in its own right, the real love relationship worth watching on this show occurs between mother and daughter.
