The Drudge Report had a lead story on its web site today citing anonymous sources who say that this season's 24 story line may involve the detonation of nuclear weapons. (Wait a second, didn't we already have a nuke detonation?)
Drudge, noting that a recent, real-life CIA report had "outlined a scenario of [a] possible 'series of explosions using low charge nuclear weapons,'" said that Fox studio sources want to push the nuclear story line in order to wake up the U.S. populace to the real dangers of terrorists setting off nuclear bombs
I don't really see how 24 creators working nuclear bomb explosions into Day Six would wake Americans up to the very real concerns about terror attacks. Yes, it is unnerving to see faux-news reports bearing 9/11-type images of bloodied Americans playing in the background on 24 from the "Fox News" channel. But would a nuclear weapon story line in 24 make me any more concerned about the safety of Americans than actual news reports about Iran developing nuclear capabilities?
Uh, no.
What do you make of this Drudge news item? Do you think 24 writers would create plot turns in order to try to influence U.S. foreign policy?
UPDATE: I just wanted to clarify, the nuclear detonation to which I was referring happened in Season Two, when George Mason died.

There is still stuff to destroy on this show? There has been nukes and power plants blow up, evil presidents (Wonder where they got that from?) and all this over the top shit. I think the show should be a comedy because I find it laughable.

Why? Why would you post this? You guys must be aware that loads of people have seen the leaked episodes and that this must have some validity. Why would you spoil it for all of us who haven't seen the leaked episodes?

You might want to edit the comment about already having a nuke detonation during the season. Most people haven't seen the 4th episode that will air tonight.

I think that was a reference to the nuke detonated in the second season, not anything about the current one.

Of course you're not "affiliated in any way," Steve -- that's why you keep posting the exact same comment linking to that video again and again.

There probably should be a potential spoiler notice posted before this article.

What to make of the Drudge news item? Well, the same thing you ever make of a Drudge news item, of course. Believe half of the stories that Drudge breaks. The trick is in figuring out which half.

The whole "hijack a nuclear weapon" thing has been done on this show before. What might be interesting though - and what they might in fact be doing with Ahmed (sorry, ACHmed) and his package - is setting us up for a dirty bomb; plutonium dust in a box plus a kid with a bomb on his body and suddenly a lot of people end up like George Mason before he crashed the airplane.

The comment about the nuclear detonation was in reference to Season Two guys. When George Mason was vaporized. Sorry I didn't clarify!

Sure they've done the highjack a nuclear weapon and blow it up before but that was out in the desert, they didn't actually detonate inside a city. Would it make people take notice of current events? Probably not, but it stand a better chance than seeing buses or subway cars exploding, we see that stuff in movies all the time.
Foreign policy? I don't think so either, it's about drama and ratings, and most nuke related dramas are about stopping the nuke, if they set it off this early, where it really on provides a foundation for the season, that's a huge gamble on the part of FOX I would think.

Have you ever read interviews with the creators and producers behind this show? Proud Republicans every one. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that; good television is good television and quite frankly I never really think about politics when I'm enjoying a show or movie -- except on those rare occasions when they beat you over the head with it. That being said, there are any number of interviews out there where these guys constantly talk about how “tough” they have it because they’re Republicans in liberal Hollywood – poor guys, it must be terrible being part of one of the most talked about shows on television. They often talk about how they are pushing an agenda and believe they must make Americans understand the horrors of terrorism and not let them forget…so on and so on. A very conceited group based on what I’ve read; as if we need reminding of terrorism or September 11 -- we see it every day. People don’t watch 24 because they’re Republicans or Democrats, or because they wish to be reminded of the horrors of terrorism. People watch this show because it is over-the-top escapist fun that also happens to be well-written and acted. People just need to get over themselves.

If they want to wake us all up to the real dangers of nuclear bombs, then they're not gonna succeed because Jack Bauer is gonna be there to fix everything surely? Isn't that what he's there for? :) We don't have a Jack in real life to save us from the mean evil terrorists at the last vital second, after all.
Actually, I've seen tonight's two episodes, so I'm gonna plead the fifth talking about nuclear detonation. And as for the show's creators and their political leanings, I gather that they hire writers with a wide range of political viewpoints, and that's often why issues are explored from many sides on quite complex levels of debate. There is definitely not one overriding political agenda being pushed here. Unless 'Jack Bauer is a badass' is a political agenda. :)

Like West Wing, 24 is a political fantasy. West Wing was how Democrats want to envision America. 24 is how Republicans like to see America now -- constantly in threat. Both shows are/were good in their own respects, but both are essentially science fiction set in alternate reality versions of America.

Been reading tvsquad for a long time, first comment though. I'd just like to thank you for the non existent spoiler warning that spoiled the end of tonight's episode. Seriously? How can something like this not have a spoiler warning attached? I've gone out of my way to avoid spoilers, then you put in the title? Once again, thanks.

This is just downright pathetic and irresponsible. Have you ever heard of a spoiler warning.
I was just scanning the headlines before the show began and had the plot twist spoiled.
I cannot believe this, this is a disgusting mishap on behalf of TVSquad. This was supposed to be a huge plot twist, and it would have been if not for your colossal bungling.
Thanks, Meredith, because of this crap I'm going to find my TV news elsewhere.
