The Daily Show: January 11, 2007

Jon StewartOf course, the big news of the episode was the previous night's presidential address about Bush's new plans to move forward in Iraq. Such a historical speech was undermined by the fact that none of the networks managed to catch the first few words of the plan. I liked the audio that The Daily Show's crew managed to get... "Good evening. I am standing in front of books. Please don't let them eat me." Anyway, the gist of the speech was: "Sorry about the mess in Iraq. We're gonna send more troops."

Senior Military Analyst Major Rob Riggle (who really did serve in the military, just like he said) gave his views on the address. This was, um, more depressing than funny. Not only have I yet to warm up to Riggle, but what he said genuinely was depressing.

The night's guest was the legendary Peter O'Toole, from the new film Venus. Couldn't O'Toole have come any other day but this? I mean, the Daily Show people must have known that the majority of the episode was going to focus on the president's address from the previous night. To have an entertainer as the guest is like asking for an awkward mood. They could have thrown in a political guest for this night and left O'Toole for one of the episodes that include a field report, which usually set a fun mood right before the interview. I don't know. It seemed weird. Maybe it was just me. The whole interview was nice, but a little awkward.

Jon/Stephen: Have I mentioned the greatness of my love for how big of a jerk Stephen Colbert's character is? Moment of Zen: Pole-licking! Only the best from FOX News.
