Well, this explains a lot. I mean, the people who win AI--and the people who get the judges' approval at any stage--all sing the same way for the most part. Heavy R&B influence, lots of gospel-y trills (what hath Mariah Carey wrought?). I find AI boring for that very reason. It's like they only recognize one kind of talent. And Dylan may have been acoustic and he may have electric, he may have been folky and bluesy and rock-n-roll, but he has never been gospel-influenced R&B.

Which, you know, is fine. Simon Cowell is entitled to like one kind of music and one alone. But it's pretty boorish of him to dismiss Dylan as if his opinion of the guy actually matters. He's not exactly a credentialled music critic. He's an organ-grinder monkey, hired to entertain the peanut galleries.

I find this amusing because of a conversation I had with my kids a while back, when I was trying to explain to them why I don't care for AI. I had Bob Dylan in the CD player, and I said, "Listen to this guy. He's probably THE most famous singer in the US and there's no way he'd ever have won American Idol."

i think some of you are missing the point. simon's not orating to you all that you MUST AGREE with him; i think all he's saying is that he'd rather listen to kelly clarkson SING than bob dylan. now, unless you're in a very specific age group, i think you'll find that the overwhelming majority would probably agree. bob dylan's voice sounds like a corpse crying out from the grave. however, his songwriting talents are altogether different, and highly revered by countless millions (especially if one is prone to magic mushrooms, lsd trips, & a quart or so of jim beam a day, etc).

Simon Cowell is shallow. Bob Dylan goes right over his head. Simon still thinks like a teenager. Will he ever outgrow the teeny boppers? Will he ever actually listen to a song and THINK about what it is saying?
I've wondered what Bob meant by this new lyric from Nettie Moore, "Before you call me any dirty names you better think twice". Open mouth, insert foot. Perhaps Simon should heed the warning. LOL

Well thank you for revealing your true colors, Mr. Cowell. I don't know if you have ever heard the songs on the album The Times They Are A' Changing, but if you have and still prefer Kelly Clarkson, you are an idiot and a boor (b-o-o-r, not the bore you accuse Dylan of being). You, as a self-appointed impresario of popular music, have a responsibility to elevate true quality and originality of vision when it crops up in our culture, but instead you choose to elevate and celebrate only teeny-bopper retreads of original acts from around Dylan's time. To liken Kelly Clarkson to Aretha Franklin is essentially meaningless. Anyway, niether one of them wrote their own music, so can there even be a comparison between their contribution to our culture and Dylan's? Can you listen to, say, "Boots of Spanish Leather" and consider any one of your contestants in the same league as Dylan? Or are you simply arguing that he does nothing for you personally? If so, you ought to humbly remove yourself from the position of cultural arbiter, go back to your records and really listen, as if you had a soul, a sensibility, an appreciation for anything other than bombast. Then come back to us with a program designed to discover the seeds of real artistic command and real original thought in our culture. What a service that would be. You Brits love to exploit our perception of you as culturally sophisticated, but your tastes expose your shallowness and, yes, callowness. If only a Dylan would turn up on your program and put all the other seekers after fame to shame (apologies to Fantasia who I consider a true interpreter of songs)

Simon has the right to his opinion. I don't like Bob Dylan either. But that is my opinion. Why does anyone get so upset over what Cowell thinks is beyond me.

Bob Dylan was and is a gifted poet/song writer. The words to his songs are brilliant and his delivery is raw, a real slice of real life and all his own. There is no equal. You may not like his voice, but to compare his talent with a contemporary
young artist who follows the pack...well, think about it.

As a singer songwriter, if I could achieve just one tenth of Dylans lyrical ability I would have stood in front of Capitol Records and said just sign me already. I dont....
Simon Cowell proves that you don't have to be smart to judge talent, just a mindless drone.
Kelly Clarkson is good, probably the best that will ever come from this show.

She is most definately not...
She cant even write a song, sing a note (that wasnt already sang for her) Go ask Decoy Studios, Diane Warren, and the many song writers and vocal coaches that she has worked with....
