A good bit of information is coming from the Doctor Who camp about the upcoming third series (what we call season here in the colonies). First off, the show will premiere in March in the UK and in the fall here in the US, most likely on SciFi Channel.
David Tennant returns as the Doctor, but without his trusty partner Rose Tyler. That's because, to the disappointment of many fans, Billie Piper decided to quit the show after the second season. She will be replaced by Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones. If the name sounds familiar, or it looks like you've seen her before, that's because she had a small role in the Doctor Who episode "Army of Ghosts". What can the Doctor and Martha look forward to this upcoming season? Well, they'll meet up with William Shakespeare, confront witches and vampires, battle a Dalek invasion in 1930's Manhattan, and reunite with Captain Jack Harkness. In other words, the usual.
As to those rumors about Tennant leaving the series at the end of this season, they may not be as true as originally thought. Right now David is committed through the fourth series of the show. It was rumored that both Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty) and David Morrissey (Basic Instinct 2) were being considered to replace Tennant in the middle of the fourth series. Those rumors have since been denied.

I would love if the current doctor stays, because he plays the role absolutly wonderful.
It is the first doctor which makes a believable turn from crazy to serious, from cold to full of feelings.

Can we all get a told you so? Most fans already knew about the 4th season signing, even through the 4th season hadn't been announced.
And it sucks Rose left so soon, the 10th Docotor and Rose got along great.

Rose Tyler sucked. Billie Piper is nice to look at, but the whole show revolving around her storyline was just lame IMO. Good riddance, I hope they can get back to the old-time stories without focusing so damn much on the sidekicks.

The best thing to losing Billie Piper is that the show can now go off in a new direction. The Christmas Special was brilliant, because it gave a chance to see how another young woman would react to the Doctor. I really wish Sci Fi had been able to show it on Christmas Day in the US.

After watching the "old" Dr. Who series and having suffered through the BBC's cancelling of it, I'm just glad to have me some new Who. Now there's a new generation of Whovians since I got my kids hooked and I hope we see many, many seasons/series of the good doctor for a long time to come.

Folks there is a major casting problem the new series producers have. A Time Lord is only allowed TWELVE regenerations. Therefore only two more actors can play the doctor before they have to end the series forever.
UNLESS... THe Last Doctor stated that if there were other Time Lords he would know it... Well what if in an alternate Timeline the opposite of this one happened? The Time Lord's Survived & their doctor died?
The only other out is a total Doctor Who Reboot.
Considering the fact the BBC destroied most of the first & second seasons of the original this may not be a bad idea.
Any thoughts?

Lazyike,
Remember that a Time Lord can regenerate twelve times, which means that there can be a total of thirteen Doctors. So, technically, there can be three more actors since Tenant is the 10th doctor.
Obviously, if the show is still successful when it gets to that point, this is sci-fi, so the rules may be adjusted. The reason that they came up with the idea of regeneration in the first place was that the show was successful, but Hartnell was sick. So, since the Doctor is the last of the Time Lords, I'm sure that they'll come up with some deal that it turns out that he can regnerate more than a "normal" Time Lord.
Marty.

as for remaining timelords there are at least 3: Susan, the Master & the Rani. I doubt those last 2 joined in the time war and Susan is living on Earth.
the big bad rumor is there will be a family story this year...

Rose Tyler did kind of suck but I still enjoyed watching her all the same. Her and the Doctor had some good chemistry.
Probably the best pairing ever.

In Regeneration Land: over the course of the "Classic Series" (as the BBC calls it)farsighted writers created at least two outs for life at the end of the 13th Doctor. First, in "The Five Doctors," the Master was given a new regeneration cycle in exchange for searching for the Doctor (the Master also found ways to steal a few extra lives). Second, there were occasions during Colin Baker's and Sylvester McCoy's reigns that the Doctor was vague about just how many regenerations there were. Last, in the book "The Infinity Doctors," Terrance Dicks suggested that Time Lords had 12-20 regenerations in 'em.
Also, thinking outside the story line, the gang at the BBC have a 45th anniversary coming up (and, we hope, a 50th). If the Daleks found away around oblivion, it seems to me that a return for the Gallifrey Gang might be in order as an appropriate "big event." While the Doctor has been loyal to the Laws of Time during the new series, many of us will remember that, in the old days, the High Council of Time Lords were situational ethicists about the rules, and broke them when it suited them. They'll be back . . . and our Doctor will be rewarded for his role in saving them.
And, by the by, the big reason the Master didn't fight in the Time War (not that he would have, anyway) is that the Doctor's TARDIS swallowed him (even burped) at the end of the Eighth Doctor's movie.

in regard to Regeneration, I'd like to point out that the doctor has already exeeded his regenerations. let me explain:
1. those who originaly came up with the idea of regeneration, never intended for hartnell to be counted as the first,
2. in Pertwee's final story, he was actualy scared that he would "die", not a fear he has shown before or since, (not the reaction of someone with regenerations left up his sleave!), a fellow Timelord forced a regeneration to repay a debit, giving us the 14th doctor not 4th Tom Baker.
3. brain of morbius, during the duel, the doctor had many more faces.
4. Logopolis, "the watcher" "joins" with Tom to give us Peter, new set of rejenerations, meaning that only 5 of his regenerations have been used
