Ever been watching Scrubs and wonder just where in the hell they are in that confounded hospital? It seems to me that there's a few basic sets: The cafeteria, the ICU, an operating room, private and semi-private rooms, the first-floor reception area, and now the new Coffee Bucks that was built in the hospital this year. There are also various hallways and patient floors that we've seen over the years.Granted, they're not really "sets," since the show is filmed in a former working hospital. But they never really show where anything is, except for the reception area (and wouldn't most people enter the hospital via the emergency room if they were sick?) and the Coffee Bucks. What's more interesting is that we see the characters go from area to area without even a thought as to the logic of it. Aren't nurses assigned to a floor or a section of a floor? Then how come we see Carla or Laverne in the ICU one minute and on the first floor the next (on the same shift)? And did the Coffee Bucks take the place of the cafeteria, because I haven't seen it since the coffee place debuted in the third episode.
Anyway, some of these questions can be answered with, "It's TV, stupid!" But others aren't so easy to explain. Anyone want to have fun with this and guess what floor each of these settings are on? Let me know in the comments.

I have a better question, where in the world is Sacred Heart located? I started watching the show in syndication, and therefore never had the benefit of learning the location from the pilot or other episodes. I know it is TV, so maybe it is meant to be a mystery. Nonetheless, sometimes it seems like the Northeast, Chicago and even the West Coast. After all, Cox has been seen wearing a NY Giants and NY Knicks jersey, but he's also been seen in a Chicago Blackhawk's jersey. Zach Braff is originally from New Jersey, where he likes to set some of his stories. In addition, Kelso claimed in an episode to have been raised in eastern Pennsylvania. Of course supporting the Chicago theory is Turk's love of Michael Jordan, but most people outside of Chicago love him. Finally, to confuse viewers further, Elliot's love interest Shawn was an animal trainer at Sea World, which would exclude the Northeast and Chicago. So if anyone can set the record straight, please share it with me. Thanks.

Matt: In the season premiere (I think) the gay seniors drove J.D. to Las Vegas, which would seem to limit it to the western half of the country.

Don't forget that Eliott once had a relationship with a guy who worked at Sea World, but referred to it as a long drive, but obviouslt not too far for then to get together whenever they wanted. Therefore I'd place Sacred Heart no further north than Long Beach, CA, and more likely somewhere in Orange County like Irvine.

Trying to use logic to deduce anything on Scrubs is a step in the wrong direction.

Well to answer your question (although I'm sure it's not the answer you're looking for) the real Sacred Heart (well the hospital they actually shoot in) is in Studio City, CA, on the corner of Riverside and Whittset. It was once a real hospital. But as for the location on the show, although references are made amongst individual characters, I'd guess the show actually takes place where they really are, and the doctors have just come from all over the country.
In the episode from last season with the Wizard of Oz theme, at the end, when they're walking in the Sacred Heart parking lot, the camera, which is overhead, pulls out to reveal the streets and mountains, looking a whole lot like a valley in CA. And they never seem to have horrible winter whether. Sometimes it a bit cold, but there is never any storms. Just my 2¢.

To correct #1. Cox actually would wear a Detroit Redwings jersey(sweater). And I've heard on a couple sites that the show is supposed to take place in CA, possibly in Los Angeles, in the Valley.

I always assumed San Diego since Elliot's ex-boyfriend, Sean (Scott Foley), worked at SeaWorld...

Gargh. And to think I stopped thinking of sitcom floorplans when Friends went off the air.
Just when I thought I was out, tvsquad drags me back in....
And Matt... c'mon... I'm from new england but I live in seattle now and wear boston area sports team jerseys. I don't think you can count where people grew up/what they wear as a geographical reference to where they are now...

Sacred Heart has been described multiple times as being in southern California on the show, especially in the first season. Sorry, I don't have any references on that, but I noticed quite a bit of geospecificity on the reruns that have been airing.
As for "sick people enter through ER," at the hospital where I work only ambulances are supposed to enter through the ER. Sick patients need to enter through the main lobby and either go to reception or to the ER reception down the hall. The direct entrance to the ER isn't really for patient use.

There are only two Sacred Heart Hospitals, one was in Pensacola,FL and the other in Cumberland,MD both were pwned by the Daughters of Charity before they started to reorganize. The on e in Cumberland is now the Braddock Campus of the Western Maryland Health System.

Nah-uh, Sam Adams! Gig is bit closer -- there's a Sacred Heart Hospital right here in Eugene, OR (which borders Springfield, the real-life inspiration for the town of Springfield on 'The Simpsons').
Anyway. California. Definitely not Washington, as Kim talks about moving to Tacoma as if it's way far away.

I don't think the show has expressly set which city they're in. According to Wikipedia, producers say the show is set in "San DaFrangeles." That said, they've shown someone reading the Los Angeles Times on screen. That would fit in with a Southern California setting, unless the person brought the paper with them.

OK, the layout is confusing me too, but not quite as much as how stupid that last episode was. I mean, Elliot was fine after what Turk said in the first scene, but later she gives her standard 'I'm emotional' look and we're supposed to believe that she's only offended much later and that Turk was being insensitive? Bleugh.
Also, the House reference(s) were offensive to anyone that watches House, as the cane does not make the House. This episode was crappy save the last few seconds, where the only real dramatic element since season 3 was revealed, ever if they had to spell it out to the audience.

The cafeteria hasn't been seen of late because they had been using that "stage" as the rehearsal hall for their upcoming musical hall. I guess they've got limited space around there, so they had to use an existing set.
From watching behind-the-scenes videos on the set, it seems the few places they have are the only places they can really use, because many of the other former patient rooms, etc., are used for the various people working on the show -- writers, editors, propmasters.

Sacred Heart is named for the boarding school that Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence's wife (who plays Jordan) attended.

Answer to #1:
Sacred Heart Hospital is fictitious and not supposed to be in a real city. Bill Lawrence said it's located in the city of San DaFrangeles, an amalgam of San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Anyhoo, I suppose having to choose between hanging out in a hospital cafeteria or in a franchise coffee house, I'd much be in the coffee place...
