(S07E11) This was an incredibly frustrating episode. As much as I love this show, episodes like this are why I don't review it weekly like I do CSI: Miami. At least with Caruso and the Miami crew, I know what I'm getting week in and week out: a cheesy, campy, and thoroughly enjoyable over the top soap opera. With CSI, it's far too often a crap shoot. And that's lousy because I expect this show to be good. Where did CBS get off telling viewers that this would be "an hour of television we'd never forget?"
Not only was Grissom's temporary departure unemotional, bland, and short (he was in the episode for about five minutes), but it left hanging questions that don't need to be hanging. First off, are he and Sara on or off? I'm indifferent to the situation (I know plenty of viewers were miffed by it after last season's finale), but what was with the awkward good-bye between them? Not to mention that fact that every bit of advice he gave and hug he received was in the preview for the episode anyway.
Then, in CBS' second promotional blunder, where the heck was Keppler? Don't put out a promotional website that lists 1/4/07 as the day we get an answer to "Who is Keppler?" and not have the guy show up in the episode! That's just lousy right there. Granted, I was only expecting to see Liev Schreiber briefly in the last minute of the episode, but still... I had every reason to expect him. We all did.
Now here's why I said this show is a crap shoot. Despite all that I'm complaining about, this had one hell of a cliffhanger and I never saw it coming. Did anyone think that the miniature replica killer was still out there? I thought Ernie Dell did it. Nope. Grissom got a package on his desk after he left and through the magic of television, we got to see inside of it. Another replica and that means another murder. We can shelve that though because it's going to sit on Gil's desk until he gets back. Unless Keppler opens it... if he shows up.
The rest of the episode was standard CSI fare and it focused on Catherine trying to nail a guy for a new set of murders since he had already been acquitted of another. It brought back the sleazy defense attorney Adam Novak too. Remember him? Catherine had a one night stand with him and he pushed her around a little? Guy was a drunk? Get a hold of "Weeping Willows" from season five. It's a good one. For you trivia buffs out there, Novak is played by Alan Rosenberg, Marg Helgenberger's real-life husband.
Alright, sound off people. Was Grissom's departure everything you hoped it would be? I wasn't the least bit satisfied with it.

Eh, I was kind of glad they played it off and didn't make the whole departure thing emotional and angst ridden. That Sara scene was pretty awkward however. For me though, this just didn't "feel" like a CSI episode for some reason. I don't think it was a bad episode... something was just off.
I don't get what's with the show suddenly having a 'token' Grissom-Hodges scene in every single episode this year, it feels really forced whereas before it was more spontaneous and entertaining.
I did guess a while ago the whole miniature crimescene wasn't over though, even CSI wouldn't spend 3 episodes on one story and mess it up by having that Ernie Dell guy be the serial killer. At least we have more of that arc to look forward to this season.

Well, I thought him leaving sucked, however, I found the end to be sooooo creepy! Did anyone notice that the miniature included an office lamp? What group of people would have the paper with the headline of the miniature killer in their office? Maybe those trying to catch him????? (reason for my thinking: people are usually not allowed to read the paper at work...)

This was the first episode I had watched in a long time since Grey's was a rerun. I spent the entire thing wondering if Sara had left then I realized it was just the writer's trying to build tension...if only I was personally invested in any of these characters. Not even the continuing arc with the doll house murders can keep me interested.

I liked the episode, but the whole thing about Grissom not communicating to his team and having closeness issues is getting a little old.

This episode was.....okay. And just okay. The writing is starting to thin out. I knew that Grissom's sabbatical (sp?) wasn't going to be a long one because he was doing a short run of a play on stage for awhile there. Which is why they had him go. The only thing that bugged me about his leaving was Sara's reaction to it. He seemed more upset over leaving her than she did. Of course, it could have been that she was acting like she didn't care, because she was so tore up inside, and yadda, yadda, yadda. But other than that, I honestly thought the episode wasn't that bad. It wasn't the best I ever saw, but not bad either.

Personally, I thought Grissom was going to ask Sara to go. When he didn't; I was a little disappointed. But, then it always leaves something for next time. As for what Lisa said in comment #2 I've never known a job where you couldn't at least look at the newspaper at break. This original{first} CSI still remains my favorite.

If Grissom is leaving the show permanently I will not be watching it anymore. He is my favorite character. It is a stong leader and he is the glue that keeps that group together.
What will happen if Catherine takes over? There still is the question is she going to inherit her father's money and quit to raise her daughter.
I think that they need to do more with Worreck. He has not had any meaty episodes since he got married.
Sara, I think she should if told Grissom I love you, but they are still wanting to play with the idea that they are a couple.
Nick, he has recovered well from his ordeal, so has the kid. However, they should allow them both to be emotionally raw for awhile longer.

If they don't bring Grisom back the show will slowly die off (sorry no pun intended). In my opinion, they should have Grisom and Sarah get together already and get rid of the hussy, Catherine. I see a power struggle in the future between Catherine and Sarah.

I've got to admit that I a great fan of this show & having lived in Japan for last 5 years & only seeing reruns of the old seasons it's great to be back & get current with the story line.
I wasn't surprised that Grissom's departure sounds only temporary you don't usually get rid of a central character mid season.
I loved the last scene when they brought in the box with the miniatures. It will keep me coming back week after week. At least for awhile.

I thought that the episode was well done. Even if the episode was an exit for Grissom, many (myself inculded) who watch to see the CSI's solve crimes and catch those responsible. Having the show be an hour long good-by for Grissom would have been a bad move. As for Grissom and Sara, that was a mistake right from last seasons final episode. I always thought that Sara should have ended up with Greg. Lastly, as for the miniatrure killer. I believe that the man they thought was responsible was really a decoy set up by the real killer, who just sent Grissom a miniature of the decoys death or of a new murder. Also, I believe that they are saving the real final confritation with him for the season finale.

BINGO! Spot on commentary! Jonathan, I couldn't agree with you more about the original CSI's writing. When it is on, it is ON with a vengeance. When it's off, it's more like "OK, why did I just spend an hour watching this???" Your first three paragraphs nailed how I have felt about CSI: LV/CSI: Miami for a long time now.
CBS really did misfire on how they handled Gil's leaving and replacement. It is almost like it was edited into this episode as an afterthought - and a not very well thought out afterthought at that. I hate it when they do that and to be honest, some of the storylines have suffered from that before.
Even though I was disappointed with this episode overall, I was SO not expecting that package on Gil's desk! I figured they would cut back and show Liev Schreiber pulling up and walking in to close the show. Instead we get another miniature - simply brilliant. I doubt that anyone but Gil will open it before he returns however. This set of episodes has truly been the bright spots in an otherwise average season.
I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when Gil returns. Anyone else think there may be a clash of egos between Grissom and Keppler?

I believe Grissom will never return as a permanent character. The box from the miniature killer is forshadowing what will happen to Gil on his sabbatical. This reminded me of the ice truck killer on Dexter, who set up another guy to look like he had done it. Love CSI but I felt ripped off by this episoode.

This is still my favorite csi cast. I hope gil will keep popping in or the show needs a whole new direction. My friends and I have been taslking back and forth about the miniture killer and I have always believed it was to easy to have Ernie Dell confess. I hope when liev does show up his character is not to over the top. Finally, What is with the Bloody doll pictures. That's the key to the murdersand I think connected to an old Grissom's case.

This show is starting to suck. I can't beleive these writers get paid for this crap. If they don't come up with something real good real soon, We'LL all be watching the new Idol and some stupid winter ice skating show real soon. no winter olympics this year and football ends real soon also. so writers better get buisy or get replaced.

How silly was Catherine's unbuttoning to get the prisoner to talk? I was just shaking my head. Grissom & Sara have no chemistry - I'm guessing the last scene between the two was supposed to be emotional? It felt so wooden.

I thought the show was a little slow moving, but still good - it is still my favorite CSI. What was the wonderful song playing in the promo's before the show aired? Anyone with a clue to this?

...Even though I watched this episode because there was no new episode of Grey's, I loved it; I must say that I don't like the Grissom-Sarah relationship; I think it somehow has ruined the show for me...to comment #5: if you watch earlier episodes of CSI, you'll see that the power struggle has been on since season 1 , between Sarah and Catherine...

I'm a romantic, so I LOVE that Sara and Grissom have a 'thing' - whatever it is. Storyline about the miniatures is creepy and intriguing . .Nick Stokes has gained too much weight in his face and he was much hotter with spikey hair.
