Every time Oprah does something that infuriates you and makes you think she's grandstanding, she turns around and does something that shows how generous and caring she can be. Case in point: Earlier today, she attended the opening ceremonies for a girls' school she built in Johannesburg, South Africa. Called the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, this was the culmination of a promise she made former president Nelson Mandela to build a school to give 150 underprivileged girls skills that will help them in the future.Our cousins at Blogging Baby mentioned over the summer that Oprah hand-picked the students herself. Her goal is to have these girls grow up and avoid the pitfalls that their parents and others in the region have encountered, especially being affected by the AIDS epidemic that's sweeping the continent.
Of course, Oprah being Oprah, she couldn't open the school quietly or anonymously. According to the article, Tina Turner, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Sidney Poitier, Chris Tucker and Spike Lee were all at the ceremony. I think the only thing she does without an announcement or ceremony is go to the bathroom, and I'm not even sure about that.

Oprah is STILL doing something that infuriates me and makes me think she's grandstanding and that includes opening the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa. It's not that I'm not a humanitarian, and it's not that I do not think little girls in South Africa need a start; it's just that I see Oprah just like any other publicity hound and if opening a school can add to that, then so be it. Besides the fact that although America should particpate in International problems, I'm a firm believer of "Clean your own house before you clean someone elses", and Ms. Oprah should be opening schools for underprivledged girls in her own America. She can't because it's harder to do in America, but if she did, and set up education business models around the country, then maybe I'd see her actions than more than publicity hounding her name.

Hounding her name or not, she is still doing something good for humanity. While American girls do need schools like this to open up for them in America, there are far more programs to help underprivileged girls in place in America than in other places e.g. Africa.

Oprah's "grandstanding" attracts attention to the program, and that is what brings other stars (and their money) to the project. It also brings a higher level of scrutiny as well. If the program is unsuccessful, it will be seen as Oprah's personal failure.
And it's alot better other celebs who pick just one child to help, like Madonna. When I read the news about her adopting the boy from Malawi, I thought "why just one kid? Why not build a great school for the community?" Oprah did just that.

I agree with Mandi. There are an awful lot of underprivileged girls in the US that could use some help. Why Africa? And why only black girls in Africa?

Why Africe? Clean our own house first in the U.S.? Uhhh, need I remind you all that the U.S. is currently spending $10 million per HOUR to alter the landscape in the Middle East. These are YOUR tax dollars at work. Before any Americans point the finger at Oprah, you/we might all want to get off our f*at *sses and vote for once. With only some 35% of the population participating in our alledged democracy, it's no wonder our own society is in a state of freefall decay--we're all responsible for the disastrous state of our educational system. Either get out and make a change, or start learning Mandarin...we'll all be working for the Chinese soon.

Oprah has give literally millions to America. She has a long term goal in mind that obviously mentally challenged people can not comprehend. Makes sense to me that this should be very public knowledge. If every Amercian gave $1 how much would that be??? Next time one of these griping complainers reaches for yet another coffee THINK about what that money could do collectively. Oprah can not save the world, we should be VERY grateful that she is willing to spent HER money and ENERGY on the less fortunate in our global community. I'm sick and tired of the uninformed spouting off about a subject they are obviously ill informed about.

Oprah is the Greatest....!
She could retire and live the soft life but no;
She goes on inspiring people all over the world.
I can not believe that anyone would criticize her in any way, shape or form yet some do or try to... sadly!
I only wish Oprah was Canadian! Every last American should be ever so proud of that Ambassador, not just to black women but to all of mankind...
This School in South Africa just adds icing to the cake. The greatest gift anyone can give another is an education and this case will a pinnacle of her sharing.
This school will prove to be a masterpiece where many other Oprahs will come out of. I look forward to that as a certainty. Who better in the world to aspire to than Oprah. She has risen from adversity to become an endless inspiration for all us!
Atta Girl Oprah Winfree!

I think Oprah is following her heart and I commend her for reaching out to those less fortunate than students here in USA. I am a teacher and I have found that many of our students here in the US take learning very casually and constantly pass up many opportunities that these students will hold near and dear to their hearts and use to their advantage. If Oprah has chosen to bless these girls I think it is great and I support her whole-heartedly.
