There's good news, and slightly not so good news, for Battlestar Galactica fans. First the good news: SyFy Portal is reporting that the SciFi Channel is expected to give the go-ahead for a fourth season of the acclaimed drama. The announcement may be made even before the show returns to the SciFi schedule in its new Sunday night slot.
The news is not so good for the Battlestar prequel spinoff, Caprica. According to unconfirmed sources at SciFi there are still plenty of things to be worked out about the series, which will take place about fifty years prior to the current run of Galactica. The source says that a premiere of the series in 2007 is probably unlikely.
The article at SyFy Portal brings up an interesting fact: SciFi Channel is known for announcing potential new series that never see the light of day. Anyone remember the big plans for the Quantum Leap remake? Hopefully Caprica will not go this way. Personally, the concept of a science-fiction based family drama interests me.

I would like to think this will be the last season, if only because I don't know how much further they can really go with this before it goes downhill fast.

Fortunately, you (sean tubbs) do not speak for the majority of BSG fans. Why is it that some think BSG is going downhill? Is there a creative writing shortage? Would you prefer another reality tv show? BSG is loaded with top-notch stars, good writers, and a storyline with endless possibilities. There is a lot of water left in this well my friends.

I personaly wouldn't mind season 4 to be the last, depending on the story.
However, I did not place any faith in this rumor until SciFi says something. Last official word from RDM and David Eick was SciFi was wating to see how early ratings in Jan/Feb played out before making a decision.
Based on previous SciFi actions with critically acclaimed shows and lower raitings I can easily see Season 3 being the last and then wanting BSG to do a mini or movies. That is a totally bad idea because then we get a seasons worth of story into a short period. Farscape PeaceKeeper Wars was just that.

I only watch SciFi for BSG. I figure there's a lot more of me than there are those who watch BSG because it just happens to be after Stargate or that BBC show or whatnot. Cancel BSG -- cancel a broader audience than you have ever had before.
Isn't this why Studio 60 (with terrible ratings and a "no win" scenario re: storylines) still airs?

I know some people feel that this season has been a little wobbly, but some of the episodes have been stellar. "The Passage" was one of the weakest episodes they've done this side of "Black Market", but other episodes, like "Unfinished Business", "Collaborators" and the "Exodus" two parter were some of the best written episodes they've put together.
The problem with complaining about BSG is that the show is so good and so well written that when a less-than-excellent episode comes on people complain endlessly, not because it's bad, per se, but because that particular episode is not as perfect as the previous perfect episode.
I'll take an average episode of BSG any day over a great episode of Lost. At least BSG is going somewhere.

BSG rules! I'd be devistated if it was ever cancelled! Especially with out closure. And especially considering how i felt when Fire Fly bit it! We need at least 3-4 more series yet!

What i would like them to do before they even think of canceling this show. Is find Earth. I mean for the 1st and 2nd season it seemed to me that they where more focused on the people then on trying to find earth. Now that the 3rd season is starting up I am getting the feeling that they maybe heading towards trying to locate Earth. I just hope that the story line will get them there before the show gets cancelled.

I hope they don't end BSG in Season 3, I would be devestated, it's the only show I watch on TV because it's so good and it seems it has so much of a future yet. I will be very sad to see it go

I would hope BSG is picked up for a fourth season? My wife and I really love the series and look forward to each and every show. Although we could do without the sex, we realize that it helps sell the show to a broader audience. I would love to see them reach earth and carry it forward into maybe a tie in to present day or a day not too far off in our own future?
