I caught the video for Paul Simon's "Call Me Al" on VH1 Classic the other night, the one in which Chevy Chase lip syncs to the song, and it got me thinking about other funny music videos. I thought it would be a great idea for one of these "The Five" lists we bloggers love so much, and as I was racking my brain I realized I could just simply list five Weird Al Yankovic videos.
But no, Adam loves a challenge, so Weird Al is off limits. After the jump, check out the five videos I came up with, along with a little help from my pal Wild Bill. Throw down some of your own suggestions in the comments.
Let's rock:
"Call Me Al" by Paul Simon
We knew Chevy Chase was a funny guy, but this video, directed by Lorne Michaels, is also a testament to Paul Simon's comedic chops. He plays the straight man perfectly, sitting bored and annoyed as Chevy selfishly takes over on vocals. Call me crazy, but I really miss the funny Chevy Chase.
"Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys
Before he moved on to feature films like Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, Spike Jonze was one of the most inspired music video directors of the '90s. His video for "Sabotage," an homage to the detective shows of the 1970s, is doubly fun to watch when you realize how much fun the band is having making the video.
"Keep Fishin'" by Weezer
Here's a tip for anyone who wants to make a fun music video: feature the Muppets. The boys of Weezer perform with the Muppets "singing" backing vocals while Animal plays the drums. Pat, the band's usual drummer, is nowhere to be found, bound up in his dressing room by the amorous Miss Piggy. Weezer's upbeat, bouncy song and the Muppets' zaniness mesh together perfectly in this video.
"Praise You" by Fatboy Slim
The second Spike Jonze video on this list, and a fine example of guerrilla filmmaking. Rather than go the usual route of placing an audio track over the video, the song comes from a boombox as Spike and the "Torrance Community Dance Troupe" dance in the middle of a mall to the mixed amusement and confusion of everyone. The dance moves make me laugh everytime, even though it pains me to say they still dance way better than I do.
"Just A Gigolo" by David Lee Roth
Probably the most dated video on this list, as Roth slides, shakes and gyrates through a studio spoofing '80s icons like Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper, but I love it because Roth clearly loved everything about being a rock star: the women, the tight varicolored clothing, the crazy hair, and the adoring fans. In the '90s, his kind would be replaced by moody introspective types like Kurt Cobain and Billy Corgan, and while I was a huge fan of Nirvana back in my high school days, I can't help but admire Roth's attitude that it's okay to lighten the hell up once in awhile.

Thanks for the shout, mang.
Allow me to also suggest,
"Just a Friend" by Biz Markie (Fat guy Beethoven wig = genius.)
"In Bloom" by Nirvana (Cobain does Sullivan)
"Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister (A shout to "Animal House?" Awesome!)
"Humpty Dance" by Digital Underground (2 Pac is a comic genius.)
"One" by Metallica (A yuck a minute, those guys.)

Fatboy Slim - "Weapon of Choice" directed by Spike Jonze. It's Christopher Walken dancing. The only thing this song/video is missing is more cowbell.

I agree wholeheartedly with the "Weapon of Choice" video from 2. I still think that video kicks as and solidfies the fact that Christopher Walken is one of the scariest men in the world--even if he knows how to fly and dance at the same time.

I would also nominate just about any of the Foo Fighter's videos, especially "big me." Outkast's "Hey Ya" also gets mad props for humor, even though it's not belly-laugh funny it's insanely fun.

Add another vote for Weapon of Choice. I also like the Foo Fighters' Learn to Fly video. Jack Black and Kyle are maintenance guys on a commercial plane and accidentally put a brick of pot into the coffee maker, and everyone on the plane except for the band itself is high and out of control. Dave Grohl plays about five different characters in this one.

Yo La Tengo's Sugarcube video is hilarious. Featuring a good deal of the Mr. Show cast! "I envy you. So much rocking to do."

Personally, I've never been able to watch Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" without laughing HYSTERICALLY. But I get the sense that's not what you're looking for.

you should also add the "i want you so hard (boy's bad news)" from the eagles of death metal for a newer funny video.
features dave grohl and jack black in funny wigs, and a guitar that blows people's clothes off.
at the end, the guitar blows off some japanese guy's clothes, and the guy is in alot of commercials, so you'll see him from then on and think of when his clothes were blown off by rockin' guitar instead of the actual product he's advertising.
oh yeah, others: new pornographers - sing me spanish techno == a guy becomes a transvestite.
broken social scene - fire eyed boy == the band is in training to overcome "fear" and geddy lee offers singing advice.
