Dresden Files: Jim Butcher interviewed

Jim ButcherSci Fi has had a good run of it lately. With the continued success of Battlestar Galactica and the Stargate franchise, and the surprisingly high rated debut of Eureka earlier this year they are becoming known for their original programming. Next up is The Dresden Files, which holds the potential to join those two in their successes.

The series is based on the popular series of books by Jim Butcher (pictured), and while we are still almost a month out from the debut, there is already a lot of discussion about the show on the internet. There is an active forum over at jim-butcher.com and the Dresden Files LJ Community to get you started.

They have also recently added a podcast, The Butcher Block, at jim-butcher.com and the newest episode features an interview with Butcher. The focus is what they call "nerdfury" over the changes being made in the transition of the Dresden story from the page to the screen. Among those they discuss are: Harry's Bug is now a Jeep, his staff is a hockey stick, Bob is now a ghost instead of an air spirit, and Karrin has become Connie. It's an interesting discussion and worth a look for fans of the books and those looking forward to the show.

I tend to fall in the let's see what happens camp with this stuff. TV Dresden is a different animal from book Dresden. Changes are to be expected, and could possibly even improve some things. You never know. At the end of the day it all comes down to whether they capture the mood and feel of Harry's world. And for now I'll take Jim Butcher's word for it when he says of the production team, "These guys get the character of Harry Dresden." I don't know if it will have the widespread appeal of Eureka, but it certainly has the potential to be another hit for Sci Fi. The show premieres January 21st.

As a final bit of TV triva, when asked what shows he is watching, Butcher responds with House, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, Dr. Who, and The Venture Bros.
