Sadly, that's the case over at ABC. Try as they might, and for reasons I don't quite get, people just don't want to watch this show. I've posted about the slide in the ratings before, and it continued this week. After garnering their lowest 18-49 numbers yet, ABC has pulled the show, with plans for the remaining episodes to be shown on ABC.com. Or, on DVD for those of you that are going to be screwed by that whole geography thing. To add insult to injury, the Wednesday schedule will be filled with repeats of George Lopez and According to Jim until the new schedule starts in January. I think this has to signal a change at the networks. The big serial drama experiment is now officially a failure. With Surface and Invasion failing to get a second season, and now Smith, Kidnapped, The Nine, Six Degrees, and Day Break all failing to finish one, I think we can look for the networks to try something different next season. And hey, if Diggs really wants to be on a hit show, they're still casting for the next Dancing with the Stars, right?... Too soon?

Invasion should have gotten a second season, the show was great and the ratings were better than anything else shown around Lost. ABC is just stupid as Fox.

i agree invasion was the best show after lost so far an had manyh more viewers then any show since. Their are so many "good " shows on tv now but the networks want instant hits why not let some of the better shows get a full season an a chance to bring up their numbers then fill it with stupid comedys that dont work or they fill um with repeats over an over an over again of their big hit shows . im so hesitent to watcha new show with the fear of why put my time into something that will be pulled ofthe air in 2 weeks since 2 weeks is all the networks sem to give new shows

Well, this is certainly a shame, though not unexpected. Day Break was the best new show of the season, hut people simply wouldn't give it a chance. The reasons I've heard for people not watching have included such stellar statements as "It's a rip-off of Groundhog Day," "It's the same thing every episode," and of course, "I refuse to watch this in protest over ABC taking Lost off the air." Sigh.

David4, I agree with you about Invasion as well. I really would have liked to see what was coming next, and given what we know now, it probably would have been a better move for the network as well.
cj, I'm mostly in agreement with you about the networks demanding too much of shows too soon. I will point out though that NBC is still moving forward with Studio 60 and Friday Night Lights. You could make very convincing cases for why to cancel either of those if you wanted. So, there are some exceptions.

I just didn't watch it because of finals and the holidays. There's a reason why traditionally December is filled with reruns. I never did get the whole concept of new TV year-round. Sometimes it's nice to take a break from TV...

It really is a shame. It was a really good, and interesting show. I'm sad to see it go.
Although, Day Break probably would've done better if it weren't known as "The Lost Fill-in." It really would've found a home on USA I would've thought. Imagine it as a summer series, it would've flourished. But, even ABC announced it as a Lost filler, basically. And with all these people bitchin' about how Lost doesn't give them answers and how Lost is on hiatus, blah blah blah, they forgot to watch Day Break.

This is a shame, as this show was really very interesting, and it was finite. Every week, he got a new answer, even though I've had a hard time keeping track over who some of the characters are. Like, I have no clue who shot Chad.
I don't understand why they wouldn't keep showing it, though. The episodes must all be in the can by now.
I think this show will work well as a DVD set, where people can just devour it.
Are broadcast networks even relevant anymore? A cable channel would have kept going with the show

Boy am I annoyed. ABC advertised this as a show where you would have a complete arc in 12 shows. They have shown 5. At the very least, they could show the last 7 one hour a day for 7 days like a mini-series. They might even prompt some interest by reshowing the first shows on one night and then the next seven nights. Well if the ongoing serial isn't dead, it doesn't matter because I won't start another. I will probably get the DVD though because I thought this was a compelling show and I want to see how they work it out.

Oh Schzznittt !!!
I was just watching the last episode on ABC.COM (my TIVO suffered a hard drive crash the night of the show) and had re-programmed the Season Pass for this great show. And... for naught?
I wonder why the ratings slipped? Was it because of the Lost connection (and for the record, I have never seen a single episode of Lost)? Or, was it an African-American lead?
Was Paula Zahn's Racism in America special (http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/paula.zahn.now/)correct in its assumptions?
No... but I think the networks are completely wrong to give up on a show so quickly. Especially, a show as well done as Day Break.
But those who remember Avery Brooks in "A Man Called Hawk" can also relate to a quality show getting the axe when it could have been fostered into a real hit. And don't get me started on the awesome news-docu that Linda Ellerbee had that got slaughtered by Cosby.
Not even cable networks are innocent. HBO whacked "Deadwood" when it was a very popular show with high ratings...
Well, I guess I'll get the Day Break DVD... and express my disappointment at another network FUBAR.

Im done with ABC. This show was better than Lost and now I cant find out what the hell happened. They probably didnt finish all the episodes so now we never find out what happens. they did the same damn thing with Invasion and The 9. Abc must have ADD if they cant wait through 12 episodes. They must also be stupid, cause the rating for this show are probably better that re-runs of according to jim. I'm still trying to figure why Jim is still on TV, that show sucks. I guess this how TV works now. America has been dumbed down by supernannies and dancing stars and now when something comes along where you have to think and speculate we just refuse to watch it and go looking for another reality show to lower our IQ. The creators of Daybreak should have pitched this to NBC since they actually keep Studio 60 on (watch studio 60)

I have a suggestion for networks in general. STOP CANCELING SHOWS BASED ONLY ON RATINGS! The ratings system is deeply flawed, and it was never intended to be a tool to decide things like this. It's a marketing research tool, not a decision maker. Why don't you try deciding what to keep based on critical acclaim and fan feedback. I don't even watch Daybreak, this outrage comes from constantly having to worry about my favorite low rated shows like VM. It's ridiculous. Grow a pair and stop canceling every other show just because the (quite possibly inaccurate) ratings aren't what you'd hoped for.

This is so frustrating! I'm getting tired of seeing my shows getting cancelled every year. This fall: Smith, 3lbs and now Daybreak! And I completely agree with Kat that the TV networks got to stop cancelling shows based on the flawed rating system. It's now more common for people to record their shows on DVRs, thus affecting the rating system to become flawed.
Honestly, primetime shows probably would get more attention from the viewers if there were not so much TV on nowdays. It's really ridiculous to have hundreds of channels running 24/7. TV networks should go off-air during the day.

The only solution to this problem of getting stuck my watching 6/7 episodes, then having it cancelled is....
record the first dozen or so on TiVO. By that time, it should be obvious whether the show's going to continue or not, and then you can start watching it. If the networks pull their usual cr*p, just delete them.
Or, in the case of A&E's wonderful "MI-5" that they cancelled, just wait for the DVDs. That way, you at least get the full 60 minute version, not the heavily-edited one that A&E ran when they did run the show.

I think viewers feel burned out by a lot of these serialized dramas. You can only watch so many at one time. When LOST took a break, so did its viewers from ABC.
As for Heroes, I theorize one reason why it's a hit is because many people who watch get more satisfaction from it than from LOST. There's a crossover audience between the two shows. I watch both, and I find Heroes to be a much more gratifying experience. I feel like I'm not wasting my time or being manipulated cynically by the producers, like I do nowadays keeping up with LOST.

Personally, I prefer serialized dramas over shows with encapsulated stories. It just seems to allow the characters and plots to evolve and get more intricate, but apparently I'm in the minority.
Reality shows make me want to puke and I certainly can't stand those singing and/or dancing contests, or the so-called "game shows", especially the one where people stand around and pick numbers hoping to eliminate the cheap dollar amounts. Hell, bingo is more exciting, but you don't see it on for an hour every friggin' night of the week! Oh crap, now some exec is going to make a show out of that, too.

I didn't care for the show, and I like serialized dramas. I love Heroes, Lost, Grey's, Battlestar, The Star Treks, Stargates, Boston Legal... the list can go on... I think there are plenty of serialized Dramas that are doing well. In the case of Gery's and Boston Legal, they have both ongoing story lines and things that are wrapped up in the single episode. And you can't tell me that 24 and Prison Break are not also hits. Believe it or not, people simply just didn't find this show interesting, myself included.

They really should have promoted this show with encore presentations. By repeatedly promising 13 episodes and then canceling the show, people are less likely to risk watching another ABC series.
