(S06E03) I know I said last week's episode of Scrubs felt almost normal, but that was before I saw this week's episode. After a few weeks of baby-centric episodes we got back to the day-to-day antics of Sacred Heart. All in all, it was a good one. Not belly-laugh funny as last week, and certainly not as, um, bad, as the season premiere. There was just some solid storytelling, a few good laughs, and new character development.
What I liked most about this week's episode was that there was finally some decent interaction between J.D. and Turk. During the first two weeks there was barely any connection between the two, and this is a pair of friends who could compete in the man-love contest against Boston Legal's Denny Crane and Alan Shore. Yes, The season premiere was a focus on J.D. and his discovery that he would be a father, and last week was about Turk and Carla's new baby. During those episodes I missed the camaraderie that these two have shown over the last five seasons, and it was good to have it back this week.
Moving on, I'd like to know if it's me or has Elliot always been this distant from the rest of her friends. It seems that over the last few weeks she has had very little interaction with J.D., Turk and Carla. Sure, she was there for Carla during the birth episode, but other than that Elliot has been in very few scenes with the rest of them. And, if the storyline introduced this week bears any fruit, she may get farther away from them. It seems that Dr. Reid impressed a private practice physician who happened to be her patient. So much so that he offered her a position at his practice. This would allow her to remain at Sacred Heart but not be under the thumb of one Perry Cox. She accepted, much to the chagrin of Dr. Cox. I wonder if this will be a throw-away plot line or something more permanent.
Speaking about new story lines, it looks like J.D. may be losing Kim, since she has accepted a new position up in Tacoma, Washington. My guess is that Kim will leave (no disappointment on my part) and J.D. will either be written as despondent, on the rebound, or determined to get to Tacoma. Who knows, if this is the last season of Scrubs the final episode may be a reunion of Kim and J.D. at the Space Needle.
I briefly want to touch on the whole plot about the new coffee franchise opening in the hospital by mentioning one word: smokachino. Caffeine and nicotine combined into a delicious beverage. Why Starbucks hasn't added this to their menu yet is beyond my imagination.
And now, the tallies . . .
High-Fives: 1
Flashbacks: 2 (3 if you count Turk's reaction to Carla when she said she didn't know when she'd be coming back to work)
Cox Rants: 1 (Very few of these this season. Must be the hair)
Muffin Puppets: 1
That's it for this week. There is actually another new episode next week. So, see you then.

What confused me was: which "Coffee Bucks" were they sitting in? The one attached to the hospital or the one on the other end of that huge line?

Why does J.D. not have any fantady scenes anymore? Are the writters trying to get less dependent on his character, because they are still going to have a lot of trouble with the narration if Zach leaves.

Eliot's character has always been the outsider looking to get into the cool group. She is Carla's friend and JD's friend lover ex friend ex lover but in many episodes in previous seasons her story line revolved around her interaction with secondary characters such as her boyfriends or Molly (Heather Graham) or Miss Sullivan (that Mad TV actress). I have not seen all the shows but I don't recall one off hand with a big Turk Eliot storyline. So her being in a secondary storyline does not seem new to me.

There was the one Turk/Elliot storyline about how Elliot didn't have Turk's number in her phone, but I think that highlights your point more than provides an exception.
And what is WRONG with Dr. Cox's hair? It was so distracting!!!

I don't think the show has come back yet. Hasn't all this happened before? JD's girl moving to another town. Elliot leaving the hospital?
Bah. I'm really disappointed this show is so slow taking off this year. meanwhile 30 rock is kicking into high gear

so...i'm thinking kim will miscarry? i dread a storyline with JD as a father, even if it is to a child in another state, which would be worse.

Dr. Cox's hair is really bad this season. And the whole Kim and JD story just didn't seem real to me. Seemed like JD was treating the pregnancy of Kim about like a game between him and Terk. I hope the season gets better.

huh, I must be getting used to Dr. Cox's hair. I don't remember getting distracted by it now.
The muffin puppet just cracks me up thinking about it. Do I smell a spin-off in the works? Oh wait, it's just blueberries.

Can somebody explain to me how Elliot can join another practice but still work at Sacred Heart? I don't get it.

Wasn't the whole coffee thing kind of a riff on Grey's Anatomy? Ever notice how the characters always have a cup of java in hand on that show (it is set in Seattle, after all).

Which are you counting as the Cox rant? I had two in my list:
A coffee place in a hospital? What's next, Bob, an ice cream parlor in the morgue? Admittedly not a horrible idea seeing's how the freezer is already down there. Plus it'd be a perfect place for kids. One of our famous vanilla malteds definitely takes the sting out of having to identify the charred remains of your father.
and
A tip jar. Really. What am I supposed to do, just duke you my change because you poured hot water through beans? Well I'll tell you what my friend, unless you're planning on giving me a complimentary reacharound with my beverage the answer is 'Yeah...no.' Here's a novel idea, why don't you go fetch me a large coffee with so damned many fake sugars in it that the coffee itself gets cancer?

Re: #11. Its not that uncommon, particularly in smaller community hospitals. For instance, a private practitioner may have admitting priveleges in the local hospital. That way if one of his/her patient's is ill he can admit them to the hospital and then round on them there and get help from hospital staff (nurses, consulting physicians, physical therapists, etc...). Dr. Cox appears to be a "hospitalist" in that he only takes care of patient's admitted to the hospital and doesn't appear to have any outpatient/clinic duties. Elliott would probably be taking a job similar to his prior protege Petey (Jay Mohr) and primarly see patients in the group partnership outpatient clinic setting but still have attending priveleges at Sacred Heart so she could have her sicker patient's admitted.

SPOILER ALERT:
According to Michael Ausiello in May:
http://www.tvguide.com/News-Views/Columnists/Ask-Ausiello/default.aspx?posting={0F3B0EBE-A211-4E2C-B05D-6205E4166A8C}
Question: Is it just me, or is it too good to be true that JD and Kim are having a kid on Scrubs? There must be a catch — although I am hoping JD and Turk can have kids at the same time. That would be hilarious. — Mike
Ausiello: Glad I'm not the only one waiting for the other baby booty to drop. Bill Lawrence told me last week that Kim is definitely pregnant, but he also said Elizabeth Banks will only be sticking around for a few episodes next season. You'd think a pivotal plot like that would require a lengthier commitment on Banks' part, no?
