The fall-out from Rosie's "ching-chong" moment on The View continues. In case you missed it, Rosie - commenting on Danny DeVito's drunken appearance on the show - said that the story was so huge that even Chinese papers were covering it. "Ching chong ching ching ching chong Danny DeVito ching ching chong drunk The View ching chong." To date, Rosie's response, made through her publicist, has been along the lines of "get over it." As you might imagine, this response hasn't exactly been embraced by certain Asian-American public figures and organizations including New York City Councilman John Liu. (You can see Liu's letter to Barbara Walters and other Asian-American organizations' responses to the incident at AngryAsianMan.com.)
Today, however, Rosie actually apologized in her own, strangely ironic way. Utilizing a bastardized version of the Japanese poetic form the haiku, Rosie wrote to one of her Asian fans via her blog:
i am sorry it hurt u
i didnt think of it the way it was taken
i will b more sensitive
promise.
I was just watching The View, however, and I'm not sure Rosie actually understands why anyone would be offended at what she said. Barbara imitated a German man who was sitting next to her at dinner, and in response, Rosie freaked in a playful way - "Was that a German accent? You're going to get letters." Clearly, Rosie doesn't understand that she wasn't doing a Chinese accent. She was doing a buck-toothed Mickey Rooney impersonation from Breakfast at Tiffany's. Rosie doesn't need to set out on a Michael Richards-style apology tour, but seriously, a woman who gets her panties in a twist over the slightest, perceived homophobic gesture, could at least pretend to understand why Asian-Americans might be offended at her spontaneous chingchongery.

It's hard for me to take a "haiku" apology very seriously. Still seems very flippant.

Here's another typical example of the two faces of Rosie. People are such assholes to keep letting this fat angry bitch complain about the injustice of homosexuals but has absolutely NO cares about others. Fans of Rosie, go to the nearest tower and wait for the next plane. Assholes.

If you read the Rosie's blog, there is thise exchange:
Elizabeth writes:
I am not a die-hard fan, but the controversy about the asian accent is absolutely ridiculous. Please don’t succumb to the over-the-top politically correct! People need to lighten up & laugh a little
yup
Who was the one being over-the-top politcally correct?! Rosie can call Kelly Ripa's comments homophobic, but not be considered "over-the-top politically correct"? Clearly, she does not understand the Asian American perception of this incident.

This isn't an apology. A real apology would be a public statement made at a press conference addressed directly to Asian Americans and their allies. A glib promise to be "more sensitive" just doesn't cut the mustard.
Even if she issues a public apology, that's no guarantee that she gets what she did wrong. There is no real incentive for her to get conscious around racism. Hollywood is one of the most racist institutions there is, as we saw in the cases of Mel Gibson and Michael Richards.

is she freakin serious? if she's gonna leave a haiku "apology", at least conform to the style of what defines a haiku. the drivel that she has offered is BS at most.
Rosie, please dig far inside you, and try to find the class that you're clearly lacking... and apologize correctly.
queen of nice... my ASS.

So she makes fun of the Chinese with her "ching chong" bit and finally says sorry with a bad Japanese haiku? What's next? Hosting a very special view in an opium den wearing a kimono while eating kim chee and adobo?

Yeah the haiku is almost worse-- just ask a Japanese if they're Chinese or vice-versa-- not a good opener for a conversation. She's completely clueless.
It wouldn't have been near as bad if it weren't for her feigned homophobia indiginity. In general it's still open season on Asians for humor, maybe because historically they haven't really raised a stink about it here.
For now, though, she should stick to making fun of Eastern European stereotypes-- everybody apparently finds it hilarious, from Borat to those stupid Orbitz ads or whatever they are.

Rosie wasn't trying to write a haiku. Once again something is taken out of context. Rosie writes her blog like that all the time. In small, steam of consciousness thoughts of just a few words. There is no attempt to follow any structure whatsoever. Get your facts straight before you make matters worse.
All it means is it's on Rosie's mind, she is sorry that someone was offended by a joke she made and she will try to be more aware next time. That's it. What she said was a joke and now a days we have to apologize for any attempts at humor at all. It's crazy.
Rosie isn't the most politically correct person and yes she went way overboard with her comments about Kelly Ripa. So I can understand why she is getting so much press over this because turn about is fair play.

Leave Rosie alone. She's a comedian and she told a pretty harmless joke that would only offend whiney babies looking for something to complain about. Rosie is funny, she's controversial and she is inspiring.

Thank you so much, MrsElDubya for cutting off this "haiku" tripe.
As for Ms. O'Donnell and her supposed hypocrisy, I'm not buying that crap. It's just another excuse. There are racist gays and lesbians. Fighting against homophobia does not equate with fighting against causes like anti-racism. The discussions about her hypocrisy is a non sequitur that needs to stop.
The problem with Rosie's behavior is not her telling jokes, but the way she told the joke and the ignorance from whence it originated. And it's highly unexpected that many others understand how ignorant it was because her antics were met to laughter and appreciative applause.
This "apology" is mediocre, and until she realizes that making a joke at the expense of an entire minority group is not fair game, she'll have a hard time convincing anyone of her foray into sensitivity.

Bernie, interesting that you say she has no cares about others. Since the beginning of her show to date, she has generated 56 MILLION dollars for children. Is she a loud mouth? Yes. Is she politically incorrect? Yes. The public may or may not like her, but to say that she doesn't care about others is just plain stupid.

Ching Chong ching chong, Rosie O'Donnell, Ching Chong ching chong, reads my fortune cookie! Now let's see if an asian wins our hot dog eating contest repeatedly, year after year, again? It's a GABBY, BITCHY, talk show for chrissake. It's only popular BECAUSE of chat like this on a daily baisis. You don't like it? Change the channel. When (altho she's obviously Korean) will Margaret Cho be the guest? Can't wait for that show! Keep on truckn Rosie! We love you BECAUSE you piss off ALL the RIGHT people! I'm not sure Asians really are watching the show since Lisa Ling left anyway. She'd be great to have back. Might put an end to all this BS.!!!!!!

I cant believe that anyone cares what Rosie has to say about anything! I cant believe Barbara Walters would have her on the show. Is Rosie the person who you want your children to look up to, or take after? I think not!! I have lost ALL respect for Barbara for her lack of integrity and responsibility to the younger viewers. I never had any respect for Rosie or anything that she has to say. This is the reason I cant let my son watch TV, because idiots on TV want to teach him that moral values dont exist. Good job Rosie!!! Again you've shown your true colors. Hopefully this time people will wake up and throw you off the air for good!!

Don't you think this is part of her job? If she can rile people up and get people talking about her, then more people turn on The View to see what the chatter is about. Holler about moral outrage all you like (and I agree that much of what exits her mouth is tacky), but that's what she wants. If you're really offended about her - or Michael Richards - STOP WATCHING and TALKING. It's the only way to make them go away.
