What About Brian: What About Secrets

Deena and Dave(S02E08) Well this was certainly an improvement. If anything, I say that only because the show did some things that I actually didn't expect to happen.

It's interesting with shows like this, especially ensemble shows. If often becomes easier to predict what certain characters are going to do next because they get put on a path of sorts. So it's always nice when they deviate from that path and you don't see it coming. I like surprises.

After last week's installment, I was pretty convinced that it was over between Adam and Heather. That may very well still happen, but for the time being it appears that it's going to work out between the two of them. Despite her shady past (Heather was busted for cocaine possession twice), Adam seems determined to make it work with his new wife. I think he actually does he love her, but you have to wonder what his motivation is. I think it's safe to assume that he still carries a torch for Marjorie and I wonder if he's so bent on making this marriage work so that when Marjorie returns, Adam can throw this in her face. Makes sense to me anyway.

The next big development was Angelo. First off I must say, that it has to suck to have your character written out of a show. It must suck even more that after you're gone, your non-existent character is killed. Then they turn your non-existent, dead character into an adulterer. That's rough but it's what happened. Nic found out that her late husband had a brief fling with an Italian actress he worked with. I support this (not the adultery itself, but the story) because it gives Nic a real reason to move on. She held Angelo on such a high pedestal. Now she realizes he was human and maybe she can find it in herself to get over him. I'm sick of her doing nothing but crying.

The last big development, and I sort of saw this one coming, was with Briget and Brian. She wants him, she came clean about it. But it turns out she had been seeing someone off and on and they wouldn't tell us who until the end of the episode. The only reason they'd hold that back is if it was shocking and damaging to Brian. They only character on the show that fits that bill is his father. Ugh... Brian's no idiot though. He figured it out and he's smart enough to stay away from her now. No one wants their father's sloppy seconds. On a completely unrelated note, the actress that plays Briget (Krista Allen) has been bugging me because I know I've seen her somewhere before and I couldn't place it. No joke, after I watched this episode, I was flipping through the stations and one of those old (horribly cheesy) soft-core Emmanuelle pornos was on. She's Emmanuelle! Hilarious.

The only story that is still flat for me is Dave and Deena. I really don't care about them, their issues, the cupcakes, their dates, nothing. It's stale and they really need to shake that story up a little. They worked better when they were together... although they've really been "together" as long as the series has been on.

Once again, I just hope Marjorie comes back next week... it's the change this show needs.

Enjoyable quote:

Brian (explaining his empty doggie bed to Briget): "I had a dog for a while but The Car Girl took him. It was very Kramer vs. Kramer."
