I posted on Friday about the craziness that was the Flanvention. After it was canceled at the last minute, fans sprung into action and organized their own little shindig. And based on reports about what happened, it sounds like it was a pretty amazing substitute for the originally planned affair. It turns out that not only did most of the scheduled guests turn up for the impromptu gathering, but they managed to get even more people from the whedonverse in the mix as well. Fans made their way to Claire Kramer's restaurant, La Cantina, where the guest list included Nathan Fillion, Ron Glass, Morena Baccarin (pictured), Michael Fairman, Mark Sheppard, Jonathan Woodward, Yan Feldman, Christina Hendricks, Claire Kramer, James Leary, Camden Toy, Michael Muhney, and Greg Edmonson. That's an impressive list.
Of course, while a good time was had, it's not the end of the story. The strange dealings of event planer Booster Entertainment continue. The website that mysteriously disappeared with the announcement of the cancellation has popped up again. Kind of, they are getting hammered by people looking for answers, so it's very slow when it does load. At this point the big questions everyone is asking are: Where did the money go? And where are the refunds? It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

This was an incredible thing the cast did for all of the fans that did not know of the cancellation. I liked Firefly and Sirenity. I just now realized how special the show and the cast really are. They've just created a new fan girl.

I was there for Flan II. The California Browncoats did an amazing job of putting on the "Backup Bash." They rented a dinner hall and busses and they managed to get a lot of talent to show up. However, just to make clear, the only people who actually spoke in front of the attendees at the BB were Tim Minnear, Jonathan Woodward (a great guy), Greg Edmondson, and a few other people with mostly business connections to Firefly (like the head of a computer gaming company).
When the actors showed up at the bar on Saturday night, the place was a madhouse. It was not a very big bar and it had a balcony outside. The place was packed and it started pouring outside. Most of the actors stayed in the VIP booth at the front and rarely ventured out into the crowd. I cannot blame them, as it was just crazy packed.
Only a few of the actors circulated among the fans. These included Michael Fairman (Niska on Firefly), Jonathan Woodward, and (briefly) the lovely Christina Hendricks.
Many people paid big bucks to attend the convention and hear these people talk and for the most part all they got was a glimpse of them through a rainy bar window.

I'd also add that although I quit after the rain got too hard and left, apparently Fairman got up on the bar and gave a farewell speech where he slipped into his Niska character and tearfully promised not to cut off any more ears.
(To be honest, many of us would like Niska to go after the people at Booster Entertainment who canceled their convention after taking everybody's money.)
