On Thursdays episode of The View, a show I never watch because I spend that time celebrating the fact I'm not watching The View, Rosie O'Donnell cracked wise about Danny DeVito's drunken appearance on the show being national news, saying that even in China the newspaper read, "Ching chong, ching ching chong, Danny DeVito!"
I don't know how accurate Rosie's grasp of Chinese is, but I do know that "ching chong, ching ching chong, Danny DeVito" should be put to a dance beat and played in clubs. I'd certainly dance to it. However, some weren't so amused with Rosie's remark: the Asian American Journalist Association wrote that Rosie's remark "gives the impression that they are a group that is substandard to English-speaking people." Rosie ironically responded in her signature fourth grade haiku style on her blog, saying no offense was meant.
My first reaction to this is that if we're going to get on Rosie's case about this, we might as well attack anyone who affects any kind of a fake accent or dialect. Bad French accents alone have been a part of comedy for ages: Monty Python and Peter Sellers both spring immediately to mind. Or is this different? Share your thoughts.

It's weird that nobody can seem to say one kind word about Rosie, but The View's ratings are up something like 30% since she joined the show.
You can't compare the "ching chong" comment with "stringing up a n--ger and sticking a fork up his ass". It's just not the same thing.

"Why are people so interested in what's she saying or doing all of the sudden? I don't remember this kind of scrutiny when she hosted her own show"
I don't know how long this blog has been around, but when Rosie had her own show, she wasn't very controversial. She was in the closet, billed herself as "nice" and had softball celebrity interviews. The only controversy from that show, was when she unfairly confronted Tom Selleck on his NRA membership.
What was humorous about that was that at the time she was the face of Kmart, which sold hunting rifles. So now we have her chastising Ripa as being homophobic and 2 weeks later she is making stereotypical Chinese comments. Typical hypocrit.

This is important because Rosie is the first one to jump down other people's throats for what she perceives to be racial, sexist, or anti gay lesbian comments/actions. See the fiasco with Kelly Ripa a couple of months ago. Rosie O'Donnell is a tool.

This is not the same as putting on an accent. Historically, "Ching Chong" is used as an ETHNIC SLUR.

I don't understand how this could even be a debate.
1) Rosie took it upon herself to play PC Police to Kelly Ripa.
2) She then says something horribly un-PC.
If you're going to talk the talk, you'd better walk the walk.
What bullshit.

I am in no way a R.O'D. fan. I think she's loud and idiotic and not even marginally funny. But, here's the deal, she doesn't speak Chinese - she made a phonic representation as to how she hears the language. We as human animals do this. We mimic the sounds we hear every day. I'm sure if she wanted to take the time to learn the language she could harness those sounds she made and attach them to actual Chinese words - her remarks were not to inflame but to make the point of how we saw a drunken (or groggy) Danny DeVito... I'd be more p.o'd if I were Danny having it relentlessly pointed out that I was drunk in front of millions. Get over it people.

If anyone thinks saying "ching chong" is okay, then just read Wikipedia's defintion: "Ching Chong is an ethnic slur directed at people of Chinese nationality or ancestry." Rosie used an ethnic slur to mock the Chinese language and people. She got some laughs at the expense of others. She needs to know that the words "ching chong" are as offensive to Asian Americans as the "n word" is to African Americans. I don't think Rosie would dare say the "n word" on national television.

Who cares what Rosie thinks anyway? She's a loudmouth blowhard who obviously believes that if you're anything BUT gay, you are fair game for her nasty, caustic "humor". I find her so offensive in general that I have stopped watching anything with her in it. So be it and who cares?

What it comes down to is a plain case of "I can be politically incorrect anytime, and so can you, as long as it's not directed toward gays". Isn't that true, Rosie??

I'm a pretty tolerant individual, especially in terms of humor. But for humor to be funny, humor actually has to sound, well, informed. I'm Chinese, and no, I wasn't offended by Rosie, but I did think she was just being far too pathetic and ignorant to be worth much time. (Plus the joke, er, wasn't funny at all. I saw it and kept expecting crickets to chirp.)
What is somewhat offensive, however, is some of the cavalier attitude I'm seeing from a number of her defenders. At least attempt to understand why someone would be offended, or why I thought this was pathetic. Slightly echoing what Annie Wu and patrick said, Rosie's comment was NOT the same as someone doing accents. This is because when comedians make fun of Frenchmen (for example), they do an exaggerated but recognizable French accent. What Rosie did here is not recognizable at all as Chinese, it's recognizable as what stupid first graders scream at the only Asian kid in their class during recess. Ergo: puerile, not funny, potentionally offensive. Plus it just showcased her ignorance: she obviously has no idea what Chinese sounds like.
The article mentions Peter Sellers. His impersonation of the Chinese detective in Murder by Death was absolutely FANTASTIC. Hilariously done (when I was little I actually thought they'd found a real Chinese dude who couldn't speak English very well to play the part), and in my opinion, he was the funniest character in the entire movie. Why is Peter Sellers funny and Rosie not? Because Peter Sellers did it well. Irreverent humor is all about taking the truth and stretching it, not taking some blatant inaccuracy and perpetuating it.
And, to Dan: this isn't about free speech. This is about manners, actually. Should we all just be rude to each other because hey, we all have the right to free speech? I hope you're not implying that the Chinese community who had problems with Rosie's little "imitation" is a group of "insecure people who need to control the behavior of others." They're not demanding that Rosie stop making jokes. They're asking for a little understanding and a public apology to acknowledge that she actually did offend people with her spur-of-the-moment joke. Does living in a country of free speech mean we should just be thoughtless and shoot our mouths off without consideration to others? Or does it mean we should engage in well-informed, intelligent debate where all opinions get equal hearing, including those from people who are "insecure" enough to feel offended by racism, sexism, or just plain ignorance?

How trivial our lives must be , mine included , to take time to argue the pros and cons of comments uttered by Rosie O'donnell of all people . Our live revolve around these anti-american cult heros and their spoken word , while we blaspheme the scholars and intellectuals and their attempts of enlightenment . And the topic we choose is the state of inebriatrion, or lack of said state , attributed to Danny Devito , an out of the main stream funny man , versed in , to my knowledge , absolutely zip . Lets face it people , Rosie verses Danny , Who gives a shit ? Are we so feared of offending , blacks , jews , asians , muslems , that we must surrender part of our Rights ot Free Speach ? Not where I live . Rosie has an opinion on everything , and thats O K . The problem is she thinks its her mission in life to share these opions with the world . This , of course is my opinion , which I am intitled to . Danny , he should work more , it might keep him off the dozens of afternoon talk shows where he , with little effort , makes an ass of himself . GOD bless AMERICA , and all the idiots imbedded therein . MERRY CHRISTMAS , IN GOD WE TRUST , ana, ONE NATION UNDER GOD .I'd be very supprised to see this in print . Yatahey , D.E.K.

I'm not chinese and I still find it offensive and childish. I cannot believe a grown person would use that type of language to mock a person. That is so elementary schoolish.

I still don't understand why she didn't have to apologize to christians. I don't remember her doing that. Mel Gibson says that Jews are the cause of all the troubles in the world when he is stone drunk and he's got to do real damage control to save his career. Rosie O'Donnell compares conservative christians(who are trying to imitate Christ in their lifestyle) to people who are murdering innocent people all over the planet and doesn't offer a word of apology and her career is going even stronger than it was before. They should just let everyone say what they want. If they want to use the N word, no problem. If you want to call mexicans 'wetbacks'. go for it. If you want to call chinese 'chinks', have at it. I, personally, wouldn't ever use that language because my parents didn't raise me to think that way. But if you are a racist, you should be free to express your racism. The system we have today only punishes certain people for their remarks and actions. If you're white, male and especially a christian, it's open season on you. People can say anything they want about you(and are even encouraged to do so) and there is no PC punishment to pay. But you better watch what you say or you could find yourself pushing a broom for the rest of your career. If you're a homosexual, you can say anything you want(a al Rosie) and there is no price for you to pay. No apology will be necessary regardless of how outrages your remarks are. But nobody better say the slightest thing about you or they could lose their TV show(a la Dr. Laura). This system favors the liberal wacko's.

Rosie needs to shut her big mouth...Evry time she opens it, she insults someone else...I'm a lesbian and I'm embarrassed by her opening that trap of her...My advise is kick her off of the View and send her packing one last time..."Rosie, you think you're an expert on everything and all you are is an embarrassment to the Gay World. Learn to have alittle class and shut your mouth, you're go farther!!"

I am with Kelly Ripa on this one. You do not ever cover an adult's mouth "shutting them up". It is desrespectful and plain wrong. She is not a baby. You actually do not even do that to kids. Who the hell is Clay to cover anyone's mouth anyway?
Rosie needs to be reprimanded by ABC for speaking how she spoke too. alet anyone say anything derogatory about lesbians/gays and she would "rip you a new one"!

Okay, David4 from comment #3...if we should have freedom of "speech", allow me to be the first to say you are a disgusting, filthy, ignorant, asshole born from a whore that screws an ape. Give me a break. Freedoms are important, but racism is an excuse to abuse this right to free speech. And the blogger should be EMBARRASSED for not deleting your pathetic comment.

Ironically, the original point of O'Donnell's comment--that DeVito's appearance on The View made news all over the world, including China, has been completely lost in the debate regarding the unfortunate manner in which she made it.
