I'm not sure if you've been reading Doc Jensen's Lost theories over at Entertainment Weekly's web site. The guy is obsessed (in a good way), and has come up with some very intriguing and plausible ideas on what is really happening on the island and what all the clues (the numbers, the names, how people are connected, etc) might actually mean. Not sure if I follow his logic with his latest theory though.
He's been thinking about the names and what they could mean in the overall picture. The people behind the show have said that the character names have not been chosen randomly. Each name means something (though I wonder what "Hurley" could mean. Does he vomit a lot? Is he really a baseball player?), and the name that especially intrigues him is the new character, Jacob, who we saw in a quick scene on one of the monitors wearing an eyepatch (if that was him, that is!).
Jensen has a long theory about how the names coincide with names and events in the Bible, and that's something I think we've all thought about. But he also says that he thinks that Jacob might be somebody that has already been in the group, maybe an Other that infiltrated the group at some point. And while the caption on the photo that accompanies that article hints that Paolo might really be Jacob, Jensen ends the piece by saying he doesn't think this is true, but wonders if Jacob could really be...Bernard?!
The piece is well worth reading, especially during this hiatus. His idea of Ben being Jacob's brother makes sense.

Concur on theory 943: this is the X-Files all over again.
This was originally pitched to ABC, and ABC wanted to do it, as a one-shot miniseries. No chance the writers had this rich, intricate, and detailed a conspiracy in mind at that point. Its just like Chris Carter all over again: the conspiracy is what I'm writing toward this week/story arch/season.
There is no man behind the curtain.

Please no...
I'm gonna be pissed if the whole thing turns out to be based on Christian mythology.
The rest of the season these writers are going to HAVE to get their stuff together, or people are going to start walking away from the show.
But, I'll take theory 943 over the bible crap.

I hate to ruin fantasy land, but the actor playing that character is not the same as Bernard. Its somebody we have'nt met yet. I learned this from lostpedia.

I'm not saying this is relevant to the names, but I remember being a bit startled when I was reading something that talked about history's "big books" or important books or something, some collection, and two of the featured authors were Rousseau and Locke.
