(S06E02) Greatest. Show. Ever. -- The Todd
Much better episode! After last week's rough start Scrubs got back to normal. Where I had one or two chuckles last episode last week I got in some good belly laughs this time around.
This week's theme was parenthood. The main story was Carla going into labor and it was the funniest part of the episode. I mean, broadcasting live pictures of Carla's woo-hoo over the closed-circuit hospital television station was classic sitcom fare. And the comments coming from those watching the show were very amusing ("Oh look, Swamp Thing"). Plus, we also got to see Carla showing a bit more vulnerability than we normally see from her, and Turk nearly missing another important event in his life with Carla.
The second story involved J.D. and Kim and the question of whether or not they should keep their baby. Meh. It had its moments, but it felt a bit heavy-handed to me. The whole thing about the talking Jesus figure saying no to Kim on having an abortion felt a bit preachy. It's almost like something Aaron Sorkin would bring up on Studio 60, minus the talking Jesus figure. And I'm not saying that because I am pro- or anti-abortion (and if you want to have that debate please don't do it in the Comments section). It's more that it just didn't seem to fit the two characters' personalities. Nevertheless, the decision that was made at the end of the episode (I won't say what it is for you West Coast and DVR viewers) does move the story along for future episodes.
Perry and Jordan rounded out the episode. Before I go on here I'd like to ask a question: what the hell is going on with John McGinley's hair? All those large curls and . . . are those blond highlights? Anyway, back to the plot. It seems that Perry is being a bit too blunt when answering some of his son's questions and it's starting to get on Jordan's nerves. Eventually Perry succumbs to Jordan's withering looks and tones it down with Jack. Gosh, Perry and Jordan's relationship has changed alot over the last few seasons. I like them as a couple; they fit together well, even through all of the barbs and sniping they do.
While we're talking about relationships I've noticed a change in the relationship between Bob Kelso and the rest of the staff. A good portion of the cranky, 'I don't give a crap' attitude is gone. I wouldn't say he's softened up, but he's certainly become more civilized. I see this in particular in his relationship with Perry. I can't remember the last time those two got into a verbal flobbernocker. Perhaps I missed an episode where they resolved their differences.
All right, here are tonight's tallies:
Number of Fantasy Sequences: 3
Brown Bear references (J.D.'s nickname for Turk): 1
Big collegiate Drum Line appearances: 1
Number of Flashbacks: 2
New word that will probably be added to Wikipedia tomorrow: Blurd (Black Nerd)
Best lines: Great Vagina -- The Tood, complementing Carla's, well, you know
"What is that?" "It's the vagina of a 35-year-old latino" -- Perry Cox talking to his son, Jack.
It looks like we get two new episodes next week. See you then.

Yeah, talking Jesus was a bit preachy (ha!) regarding the abortion thing, but he was funny hanging outside the linen closet while they did it. "What did you two just do, because I don't see any WEDDING RINGS!"
Everybody staying out of range of Carla's swing was great, too. All the best jokes were visual this week.

With Kelso, I don't think it is necesarilly that he "resolved" his problems with Dr. Cox, but last season, when Dr. Cox spent the day at the bar after his patients died, Kelso came in and basically told Dr. Cox that he appreicated him and that they balance each other out well.

I think the "preaching" was a good balance, actually. Those who would've leaned in that direction would've thought, "hey, that's cool that Jesus is telling it like it is" while people who leaned in the other direction would've thought, "hah, they're totally making fun of those crazy beliefs". I thought it was an amusing way to make the very heavy decision they had to make something a little more light-hearted.

The insider gossip is that Johnny C. was filming a movie during these episodes, hence the different hair.
Apparently, in last week's episode his hair changed several times DURING the episode, because it was shot over such a long period (something like 4 weeks?)

I thought this was a great episode the whole opening part with the drum line was hilarious. I thought the talking Jesus was pretty funny.
On a slightly unrelated note how come nobody reviews 30 Rock? Its getting better every episode.

You may be wondering what is up with Cox's hair, but I am wondering what is up with Christa Miller's face? Could she have had more plastic surgery?

I HATED this episode. While in some places it seemed more "normal" could it have been any more preachy? And why the side steping around the abortion issue? Only Jordan bothered to speak frankly and even then she was cut off so they could have pseduo drama regarding the baby. (That was a pretty quick trip to the NICU, huh? Not to mention how could they just bring a baby into the waiting room?) Scrubs is usually great with mixing sentiment and comedy - but this was just sappy!
And Kim is a terrible character. She doesn't fit in with the group. Everything with her feels forced.

I'm afraid we're witnessing the end of a very good show. Time and time again, when babies are forced onto a show that's already established as a "single person" show, it's curtains. I was impressed with how they handled baby Jack, but I'm afraid that the "family" angle is going to overplay the original great chemistry in the show.
Also, hasn't Zach Braff stated several times that he's leaving after this season? There's no way they can make him a daddy, and then drop him from the show.
Remember the good times my friends, for they are behind us starting this season. Enjoy the syndication eps.

Favorite of the visual jokes - Turk's frozen hand.
Especially funny/creepy when he placed it on Carla's forehead.

Best part of the show was hearing the Matt Nathanson tune, "I Saw". Been a big fan for years and it was really cool to hear him on my favorite show.

My thoughts exactly. She looks like she had a stroke... Creeping me out, kinda Lara Flynn Boyle did/does.
And the episode was good. Some nice humor, idiotic (in a positive sense) fantasy sequences, all of the characters involved... I liked it. Got concerned for a second when Elliott anounced that the baby got into NICU, but I guess they will save the sad story line of a failed pregnancy/child-death to J.D. :-(
What is the ONLY beef I have with this show at the moment: They used to walk the thin red line between drama and comedy where you went from so sad you couldn't swallow to hysterical laughing your ass off.
Not so much anymore... It's mainly just wacky.

Very funny episode with some great moments: JD and Janitor slapping Turk, Janitor trying to cut his arm off ("Hold still...nobody likes a ragged stump"), The Todd...I love the shrieking voice Donald Faison makes. Makes me laugh every time.
But my least favorite part of Scrubs reared its ugly head again: Elliott coming in and announcing to everybody that the baby maybe in trouble. Did they really have to do that? It felt forced, and then less than a minute later Turk comes out with the baby. WTF is that?

OK, didn't anybody notice "Nobody's Watching" guys standing in the hall and looking funny right before JD and Kim did in the closet? I thought there'd be a lot of comments about that here by now :)

SJ, Elliott did that so that Turk could tell the news to the group--she didn't want to blab it first. Obviously, the baby was fine.
